"I understand from outside there is an expectation of success from the three of us [Bellingham, Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe] and the whole team. It is nice we scored but it is useless if we don't win games.

"Preferably we finish in the top eight, it is fewer games and a chance to regroup a bit. It would be nice to go for the top eight and have some rest at some point."

Manchester City will start to get a bit nervous if they lose tomorrow at Juventus in a mouth-watering tie in Italy.

RB Leipzig are the first side to have their hopes of advancing ended.

With two and a half more matchdays to come, Liverpool are heading into the last 16 with Aston Villa in a strong position to join them.

A reminder, those in the top eight after everyone has played eight games move straight into the last 16, with those ranked ninth to 24th playing in a two-legged play-off to join them.

Anyone who comes 25th or lower is out and their European campaigns are over for the season.

Aston Villa captain John McGinn speaking to Amazon Prime: "It was disappointing losing the offside goal. I think the two goals we conceded were disappointing from our point of view. I thought overall we were the better team and we could have scored more.

"We dealt with their problems well and what we needed today was substitutes to come on and make a difference.

"It is exciting. We had some disappointing results off the great start and it is great to be in the top three. We have that Monaco game and then a nice one against Celtic."

You add that result to their previous results, you look where they are in the table, that gives them a little bit of breathing space now and away at Monaco, at home to Celtic.

Those games all of a sudden look a little bit easier for Villa, especially when the Villa fans will look at that table.

Jon: A deserved win that. Very good performance. Emi is allowed the odd off game I think. Thought Cash looked good at RW. Konsa/Carlos right side of defence was weak again, a concern. Also felt Tielemans didn't have his best of games but that may be hyper-critical.

It cannot be underestimated the size of that win. That was a performance and a win that Unai Emery would have wanted from his team tonight.

They were outstanding at times, two silly mistakes cost them the goals, other than that, defensively they weren't really under any kind of threat, going forward they looked like they were going to create and cause problems.

That makes their Champions League campaign thus far a real success.

Aston Villa were asked big questions but the way they fought back and the substitutes made a difference, what a night again for them in this competition.

A huge three points for Aston Villa in their bid to finish in the top eight and move straight into the last 16 and avoid a play-off.

With two games to go, Villa will be heading up to third as it stands.

Meanwhile for RB Leipzig, with six losses from six matches and two games still to play, their hopes of being in the Champions League from February onwards are over. They're eliminated.
