Phew. And breathe. It was a bad night for those who enjoy draws in League One. There were none, in a dozen games... there were however 36 goals, six of which went to Leyton Orient at Exeter as the Os gate-crashed the play-off places.

A good night for Birmingham, who look nailed-on for promotion before the end of January, and Wycombe, who dug deep to find another dramatic win to keep in touch. Bad night for Wrexham, beaten at home by a deserving Stevenage, and for fourth-placed Huddersfield, who are firmly in the sights of the upwardly mobile Stockport, Orient, Bolton and Charlton.

At the other end of League One, Peterborough won a priceless victory, Cambridge were defeated, while basement boys Shrewsbury also lost, though Burton edged Reading and Crawley won at Mansfield to inch closer to safety.

In League Two Walsall are wobbling, but still have an 11-point lead, though it could be nine if Doncaster can win at Barrow tomorrow night in a game we'll bring you live right here.

Thanks for your company tonight, rest up, plenty more EFL excitement to come on Wednesday night. For now, goodnight!

Carlisle's defeat at Notts County and Morecambe's loss at Bradford means both sides are at least two wins away from catching the teams above the League Two relegation zone.

Tranmere's late capitulation at Swindon is some consolation for the bottom two, while Gillingham's first win under John Coleman means they are clear of the bottom six.

Accrington's draw at home to Cheltenham means Stanley have one win in five home games but they have a match in hand over the bottom two and are eight points clear.

Harrogate have taken one point from their last seven midweek games after their last-gasp defeat at MK Dons and will be concerned at the prospect of the teams below them all having at least two games in hand, including Newport, who have three more matches than them to play and collected a point in a 1-1 draw at Salford.

They looked dead and buried a fortnight ago but Burton have won three games in a row under Gary Bowyer, are unbeaten in their past four, and are now three points from safety.

Crawley won late at Mansfield to also move within three points of Northampton who lost at Bolton.

Cambridge United missed the chance to also move on to 24 points as they lost 2-1 at Rotherham despite taking the lead.

Shrewsbury's 1-0 loss at Stockport leaves them seven points adrift of safety at the bottom.

Peterborough ended their horror run of eight without a win by beating Wigan 1-0.

  4. Blues and Chairboys on the chargepublished at 22:08 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January

There's now daylight between Birmingham and Wycombe and the rest.

Blues remain two points clear with their 1-0 win at Huddersfield, and Wycombe's late 2-1 victory over Barnsley means they're now six points ahead of third-placed Wrexham whose unbeaten home record blew up against Stevenage.

Huddersfield remain fourth and Stockport's 1-0 win over Shrewsbury sees them fifth but the big story is Leyton Orient are into the top six.

Azeem Abdulai hit a hat-trick in their 6-2 victory at Exeter as they made it 11 league games unbeaten with nine wins in that run.

Bolton and Charlton also both won but Barnsley and Reading drop to ninth and tenth respectively with their defeats this evening.

It's still lonely at the top of League Two for Walsall, who are 11 points clear despite losing twice in four days, with two points separating the six teams immediately below them.

Goal difference gives Notts County the edge over Bradford, while Doncaster can go clear in second when they visit Barrow tomorrow.

Crewe would have gone two points clear of the Magpies with a victory at home to Wimbledon, but their opponents may feel they should be level on points with them after securing a 1-1 draw and hitting the crossbar through Marcus Browne.

Only Walsall have scored more goals than Chesterfield, who gave their hopes of joining the pack a boost by winning 3-0 at home to Bromley.

Danny Rose's 97th-minute equaliser for Grimsby in a 1-1 draw at home to Gillingham kept them level on points with the Spireites.

Pathetic first half by Wrexham. No where near good enough. To be this far behind Wycombe and Birmingham is embarrassing. Just throwing promotion away. Massive credit Stevenage and deserved winners.

    Huddersfield 0-1 Birmingham

Birmingham have seen this one out like, dare I say it, Champions.

Keshi Anderson's superb strike, taking the ball on his chest and unleashing a vicious dipping volley under the crossbar from well outside the area, was worthy of winning any game.

For Huddersfield, it's a blow in their push for automatic promotion, and back-to-back home defeats, without scoring, in the space of four days.

Blues have a nice cushion, and games in hand in the race for a top-two finish.

Azeem Abdulai already looks a smart signing by Leyton Orient from Swansea as he grabbed a hat-trick in a 6-2 win at Exeter. The O's are now in the top six.

Charlton strengthened their play-off charge by beating Bristol Rovers 2-0 and Stockport held on to beat Shrewsbury 1-0.

Reading suffered a hammer blow defeat by a resurgent Burton - the Royals recovered from 2-0 down to level only for Rumarn Burrell to score his second goal and the winner in the last minute.

Ade Adeyemo scored a late winner for Crawley as they won 1-0 at Mansfield, and Rotherham came from behind to beat Cambridge United 2-1 with Hakeem Odoffin scoring the second goal for the Millers.

Peterborough halted their slide with a 1-0 win over Wigan.

Goals from Ashley Fletcher and Oliver Casey gave Blackpool a 2-0 away win at Lincoln.

Good block from Radinio Balker to thwart Alfie May as he looked set to stride through unopposed to get a shot away at Jacob Chapman's goal.

May allows the ball to bounce behind for a corner, but then picks up a booking for something he said, presumably.

Blues can't make the corner county but the ball is returned to debutant Kieran Dowell, who came off the bench earlier, who whips a first-time shot over Chapman's crossbar from the edge of the box.

That would have sealed it nicely.

Birmingham, perhaps understandably, are in no hurry to take throw-ins.

Referee Adam Herczeg is already telling them to get on with it, and we have another seven minutes yet.

Not sure if the news of Wycombe's win or Wrexham's defeat will have filtered through to the pitch and if so, whether that would make any difference.

Notts County and Bradford are the big winners of the night, scoring the only goals of their games before the break to move level with Crewe as the three teams immediately behind leaders Walsall.

Calum Kavanagh gave the Bantams victory over bottom side Morecambe, while Alassana Jatta’s winner took the Magpies past second-bottom Carlisle.

Crewe took an early lead at home to Wimbledon when Jamie Knight-Lebel pounced following a corner, but Josh Neufville's equaliser just before half-time gave the away side a 1-1 draw. They're two points behind the Railwaymen in sixth.

Swindon are closer to the play-off places than danger thanks to a 3-1 win over third-bottom Tranmere, recovering from 1-0 behind in the 86th minute to condemn Rovers to eight consecutive away defeats during a single EFL season for only the second time in 40 years. The visitors had two players sent off.

Midtable Fleetwood thrashed Walsall 6-2 in October and have beaten them again, scoring through Shaun Rooney and James Bolton in a 2-0 home win as the Saddlers' winless run at Highbury Stadium extended to four games.

John Coleman was denied his first win since taking over at Gillingham as Danny Rose's 97th-minute equaliser gave Grimsby a 1-1 draw. Doug Tharme's own goal had put the visitors in front.

Tyrese Fornah’s second-half dismissal compounded Salford’s frustration as they missed out on going seventh with a 1-1 draw at home to fourth-bottom Newport, who are six points clear of danger.

Harrogate have been beaten in their last three meetings with MK Dons after losing in cruel fashion tonight. The visitors equalised in the 92nd minute through Zico Asare but Alex Gilbey condemned them to a 2-1 defeat with the winner a minute later.

Chesterfield beat Bromley 3-0 at home to win in midweek for the first time in four attempts and win their first game in six, helped by Omar Sowunmi's 23rd-minute dismissal along with visiting manager Andy Woodman.

Cheltenham are winless in six away games and have failed to score in their last three after earning a 0-0 draw at Accrington, who are eight points above the relegation zone after taking 10 points from their last five league games.

Tom Lees might have a broken nose there.

Blues make a double switch during the delay. Grant Hanley comes on for his City debut, replacing Taylor Gardner-Hickman, with Alfie May also coming on, replacing Dykes, who might have been walking off a minute or two earlier if his challenge on Lees had been viewed differently.

Lees is coming off, it must be a concussion sub, as Radinio Balker becomes the sixth Terriers man off the bench.

Barnsley started the game great, a perfect away start, but as the game grew, Barnsley got deeper and deeper and deeper.

Whether it is a penalty or not we will have to revisit, but with the centre-half then sent off it was backs against the wall for the away side from thereon in.

This one still has time to run, of course.

Birmingham wanted a red card for Jonathan Hogg for a challenge on Tomoki Iwata, though the Town man only received a caution, while Matty Pearson headed over the crossbar for the hosts from a fizzing cross from Anthony Evans.

Still five minutes and plenty of stoppage-time to come.

Lyndon Dykes has just left Tom Lees in a crumpled heap on the floor under a high ball and picked up a caution.

Lees needs some lengthy treatment to his head.

Richard Kone at the double - who else?

    No Matt Bloomfield? No problem.

They did it the hard way but Wycombe take a grip on second place thanks to Richard Kone's penalty and their leading scorer's injury-time header.

That came after Jon Russell had fired Barnsley ahead after 10 minutes and then seen goalkeeper Ben Killip put on a masterclass to keep the Tykes ahead.

Marc Roberts' needless sending-off for the visitors didn't help their cause with the scoreline at 1-1 and they were eventually made to pay but not before Adam Phillips blasted a glaring chance over the bar moments before Kone's heroics.

    Wrexham 2-3 Stevenage

People will say, 'Oh wow, Wrexham,' when they see this scoreline, but Stevenage were fantastic and absolutely deserve the win. They end the Red Dragons' 15-game unbeaten streak at the Stok Cae Ras.

OK, so Arthur Okonkwo might have done better for Dan Kemp and Jamie Reid's first-half goals, but after Ollie Rathbone (with a little help from Paul Mullin) got the hosts back into it after the break, we all thought the hosts would mount a Hollywood comeback.

No. Jake Young added a fine third for the visitors and though Max Cleworth's flying header did tee-up a tense finale, Boro held on for a deserved three points.
