Oxford United fought back to beat struggling Luton Town and stretch their unbeaten run in the Championship to seven games.

The Hatters, who have picked up one point from their past six league matches, broke the deadlock as Tom Krauss fired in an opener.

But Luton's lead only lasted 11 minutes as Oxford equalised through defender Michal Helik.

The visitors restored their advantage at the Kassam Stadium inside a frantic opening half-hour through Mark McGuinness' towering header.

However, Oxford levelled again in the second half as Ciaron Brown scored from a corner and full-back Greg Leigh then stooped in unmarked to head in Will Vaulks' deep cross.

Gary Rowett has now won five and drawn two of his seven league games in charge since taking over in December and the U's are closer to the play-offs than the drop zone.

Luton, with Matt Bloomfield in charge for his second match, stay in the bottom three on goal difference and have now lost their past 12 away games in all competitions.

Bloomfield oversaw a goalless draw against Preston on Saturday after joining from Wycombe, but despite his side taking the lead twice this time around, Luton's defensive problems in the air failed them.

Mainz loanee Krauss gave the Hatters hope of ending their dismal away record as he flashed in an angled shot past Jamie Cumming.

January signing Helik poked in Cameron Brannagan perfectly placed cross to draw the hosts level.

But fellow defender McGuinness powered in a header from a corner to restore Luton's lead despite Cumming's efforts to claw the ball back over the line.

It was another set-piece which led to Oxford's second equaliser on the hour mark as Brown found space in a crowded area to turn in Brannagan's corner.

Helik's fine block stopped Elijah Adebayo putting Luton back in front before Leigh scored the winner.

The Jamaica international, born in Greater Manchester, guided in his fourth league goal of the campaign as Luton's defence went missing.

Oxford United manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Oxford:

"I felt this would be our toughest test in some ways. I hadn't watched them play.

"They're a little bit different in terms of what they do. They're very direct and they play off second balls.

"It stretches the game, it opens the game and it means that if you turn the ball over, you end up running back 30 or 40 yards and having to defend.

"A little bit too much space for my liking, we didn't use the pockets as well as we have done in the first few games but I think that was partly down to Luton blocking them and creating those limited opportunities for us to get there."

Luton manager Matt Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"There was some real good stuff especially in the first half. We sunk a little bit too deep for my liking in the second half and ultimately invited a little bit of pressure.

"That's not what we wanted to do. It's frustrating because there were some good elements but we've come away with nothing because we have to defend our box better.

"It's (Oxford's winner) very disappointing. The game will never change, the two 18-yard boxes are the most important areas of the pitch.

"You have to defend one end with your life and you have to stick the ball away in the net the other end, that's what the game comes down to."
