We don't know about you, but these EFL midweek programmes truly come alive after Christmas.

Results suddenly seem to take on even more importance in the race for promotion and the relegation battle.

Just ask Sheffield United who went top of the Championship and Burton who climbed off the foot of League One, both winning away.

Imagine the mood on the team bus and in supporters' cars on the journey back home.

And the best thing of all, if you've enjoyed our coverage tonight, let's do it all again tomorrow.

Thanks for your company - we'll be back from 7pm for four more Championship games.

Well, if that wasn't enough entertainment for you, we have four games heading your way on Wednesday.

Leeds will hope to return to the top of the Championship when they host mid-table Norwich, while fourth-placed Burnley can climb back to third if they take victory at bottom-of-the-table Plymouth.

And both Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City can make a move towards the top six with victory. Both sides have 37 points.

  3. 'If you're going to lose, that's the way to lose'published at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Derby 0-1 Sunderland

    Derby County

Derby County head coach Paul Warne told BBC Radio Derby:

“I thought second half we played with more intent. No fan wants to hear this off of their manager, no doubt, but if you are going to lose then that is the way to lose.

“You’ve got to try put your personality on the game, you have to put crosses in the box, make the keeper make saves and give the fans something to cheer

“I didn’t think we did that in the first half and I was expecting bigger boos at half-time, truth be told. I appreciate everyone that got behind the team and the team needed it.

“All in all I’m proud, but hugely disappointed that we didn’t get anything.”

  4. 'I'd have liked a more relaxed end'published at 22:51 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Derby 0-1 Sunderland

    Sunderland

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris was asked by BBC Radio Newcastle if he knew why Wilson Isidor's second half goal had been controversially disallowed during his side's 1-0 win:

"I don’t know, really. Maybe with VAR we could analyse the first ball and maybe an offside, but I don’t think it was that decision. It was higher up the pitch and at the moment we don’t know.

“It could have changed the outcome of the game, but at the end it was another tough game and the balance was different for the duration.

“We started maybe a little slowly because they are direct, and then after 15 minutes we were good and created many chances in the first half. And if you don’t score the second goal, you know that the opponent will believe until the end and it happened like that.

“It’s good for our character because it shows that even in these circumstances we are ready to defend until the end.

“At the opposite side, I’d also like to have a more relaxed end to the game because it’s important to avoid last-minute equalisers, and we have had them before.”

  5. 'Important for building feeling'published at 22:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Blackburn 0-2 Coventry

    Coventry

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard told BBC CWR:

"They had a couple of moments and that's when we started to make changes. We made some changes for freshness and the players that came in gave us a good solidity.

"These things are important for building feeling, that we can come to places like this and win two games on the trot. Now we have to recover and go again.

"Winning games like this in midweek and coming away like this, is really important for feeling and the lads have to understand what it takes to win."

  6. 'The effort of the boys was excellent tonight' - Eustacepublished at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Blackburn 0-2 Coventry

    Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"The effort of the boys was excellent tonight and the attitude was very good. We had five big chances which we didn't put away unfortunately.

"Coventry scored with the first effort on goal, I think it was, right before half-time so it was a tough one to take.

"You can see we've got 11 senior boys out but the effort the boys put in on the pitch tonight was there for everyone to see.

"We have to defend better from the corner and second phase. The goal after half-time was a disappointment because we spoke about things we had to do defensively which we didn't, then after that we were huffing and puffing but the attitude was very good."

  7. 'We need to keep pushing'published at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Hull City 1-2 QPR

    QPR

QPR are now up to ninth place and head coach Marti Cifuentes has been speaking to BBC Radio London:

"I'm very happy - it was a difficult game away against a side which has changed a lot.

"The pitch was not at the level I think a league like this deserves so it was difficult to play how we want to, but we scored two goals and performed at a good level against a good team.

"We need to keep pushing - football can change very quickly so we need to be very humble and keep working."

  8. 'We have to analyse what went wrong'published at 22:44 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Hull City 1-2 QPR

    Hull City

Hull City boss Ruben Selles told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I think the first goal put us on the back-foot and the second happened so quickly, we didn't have time to react.

"It is important we analyse the situations and see what went wrong. We have to continue with the players we have and introduce the new players, some of whom are coming from not having competitive games for eight to 10 weeks."

    On QPR's second goal:

"It cannot happen. Cody [Drameh] can get beaten in that situation but we were not ready for that quick throw-in. I think that it was more about the level of attention for the team - those situations are the kind of situations we are trying to remove from our game."

  9. 'We have to defend better'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

FT: Oxford United 3-2 Luton Town

    Luton Town

It's now 11 successive away league defeats for Luton, who are second from bottom in the Championship.

Boss Matt Bloomfield has told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"There was some good stuff, especially in the first half, but we sunk too deep in the second for my liking.

"We invited some pressure and it's frustrating - we've come away with nothing because we have to defend our box better.

"The game will never change - the two 18-yard boxes are the most important areas of the pitch - you have to defend one end with your life and stick the ball in the net at the other end - ultimately we didn't defend our goal well enough and if you do that you won't win games."

  10. 'A fabulous way to win the game'published at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

FT: Oxford United 3-2 Luton Town

    Oxford United

Oxford made it seven games unbeaten since Gary Rowett took over.

He has been talking to BBC Radio Oxford:

"I felt this would be our toughest test - they're very direct.

"I'm disappointed with the two goals we conceded but pleased with how we responded.

"I probably wouldn't have expected the quality of the goals from the defenders we got tonight - a fabulous way to win the game but it was a tough evening."

  11. 'They had more menace than us'published at 22:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Middlesbrough 2-0 West Brom

    West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion head coach Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio WM:

“The first goal was a bit disappointing. The shot came from 30 yards out and it bounced in front of the keeper.

“Then we got sucker punched by a second goal from outside the box. But it just felt they had a bit more menace than us.

“The reality is that we need to score a few goals – and that is not a new thing. It’s about taking responsibility in the final third.

“Maybe it’s about confidence. There was one at the end that just needed to someone to be there to put away at the far post.”

  12. 'It is important win for us' - Carrickpublished at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Middlesbrough 2-0 WBA

    Middlesbrough

Speaking to BBC Radio Tees, Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick said:

"It is important win for us, I was really pleased with the boys tonight I thought that we played some really good football and controlled a lot of the first half.

"It is not easy to do against a good team and I thought we played some really good football and caused them a lot of problems, we got ourselves into a really good position.

"Maybe that was in the boys heads a bit in the second half, they [West Brom] started putting a lot of bodies forward and lots of balls in behind, so we had to defend a little bit deeper at times.

"We defended well for the most part, but to get the second goal it was encouraging really to see two different playing styles that we have had to end up using to win the game."

  13. Postpublished at 22:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

A bit of reaction now from the earlier games...

  14. 'I knew I'd get another chance'published at 22:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Millwall 2-2 Cardiff

    Cardiff City

Yousef Salech, Cardiff forward, told Sky Sports: "The big chance actually came before (the equalising goal), with the header.

"Being a striker is about sniffing out the next chance if you miss one. You think about it for a few seconds but I know I'll get another chance if I keep going forward and find space and that's what happened.

"It's a great club, I'm happy to be a part of it. Hopefully I can push and give something every week."

  15. 'It's criminal to concede the goals we did'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Millwall 2-2 Cardiff

    Millwall

Alex Neil, Millwall manager, told Sky Sports: "We conceded a goal a minute before half-time and in the last minute. From our perspective that's criminal. We've only got ourselves to blame. The lads have given everything, they're out on their feet, but that's when you need to dig in. We cleared it straight to them twice when we had the chance to clear it.

"When you are 2-0 up you expect to win the game. To score two goals, brilliant goals, is big for us. Goals and wins have been hard to come by and you could see a little nervousness from the lads wanting to get across the line.

"To concede the goals when we did, it's hard to accept. You have to take your medicine when you make mistakes. We have."

  16. 'Shoe's on the other foot for once'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Millwall 2-2 Cardiff

    Cardiff City

Cardiff boss Omer Riza told Sky Sports: "I am really proud of the boys.

"To go 2-0 down at The Den and show character to come back. We're delighted and we can go forward with that.

"We've been done like that a couple of times this season so it's nice when the shoe is on the other foot.

"We put a lot into Saturday and we started slowly, but showed great character to come back."

  17. 'We'll take the point'published at 22:24 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Millwall 2-2 Cardiff

    Cardiff City

Callum Chambers, Cardiff defender, told Sky Sports: "We put in a real fighting spirit. We got off to a bit of a slow start but really happy with the spirit and to get the equaliser in the last minute is a great feeling.

"There was a bit of a lag from the effort we put into derby game on Saturday but we should try and build on this now. It was about getting a result and with the way the game started we'll take that, coming here after the effort we put in at the weekend."

Charlton are into the top 10 with their late victory at Bolton making it four wins from their past six games.

Bolton miss the change to go level on points with sixth placed Stockport and it's just three wins from their past 10 league games for the Trotters.

  20. Burton off the bottom of League Onepublished at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Burton's win at Wigan gives Gary Bowyer his first win in charge of the Brewers and lifts them off the bottom of the table.

Wigan still have a nine point cushion.

Peterborough conceded an injury time equaliser at home to Exeter and are still too close for comfort.
