Kylian Mbappe was sent off for the first time in his Real Madrid career but his team-mates held on to defeat Alaves in La Liga on Sunday.

It was the Spanish giants' first win in four matches across all competitions.

Mbappe was initially shown a yellow card for catching Antonio Blanco high on the shin with a late challenge, but that was upgraded to red after VAR invited referee Cesar Soto Grado to watch the incident again on the pitchside monitor.

Though the France international's dismissal will have no impact on his participation in the Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal, Eduardo Camavinga, who scored the winner, will miss Wednesday's game after picking up a second yellow card at Emirates Stadium.

Carlo Ancelotti's side needed an extra-time winner from Antonio Rudiger to progress to the Copa del Rey final by beating Real Sociedad before losing to Valencia in the league and Arsenal.

    Real Madrid's past five matches:

    • Alaves 0-1 Real Madrid
    • Arsenal 3-0 Real Madrid
    • Real Madrid 1-2 Valencia
    • Real Madrid 4-4 Real Sociedad (won 5-4 on agg)
    • Real Madrid 3-2 Leganes

This is probably one of the best PSG teams in the history of the club. They've had great teams with Ibrahimovic, Neymar, Mbappe, Messi, but this is probably one of the greatest.

You see how some players have improved individually, like Desire Doue still only 19 years old. He has surprised the whole world with how good he's been. Ousmane Dembele who is much older, a World Cup winner but he has still got to another level. Really since the start of 2025 they have been outstanding.

I'm looking forward to the game against PSG. I was at the Bayern Munich game and the roof nearly came off the stadium when Jhon Duran scored that goal. I can't see how Villa will go through against PSG, I think PSG will win the Champions League. I think they are a well-balanced team. They've got rid of all the big hitters now.

I think the scoreline of a 3-1 deficit is not too bad. It's more the performance of PSG that is worrying, they're such a dominant team. A lot of people saw how well they played against Liverpool. Aston Villa played really well in the first half and I thought they had the perfect game plan. But then second half they changed their approach and you could see how PSG can rip you apart if you give them time and space.

It's going to be a great test and I'm looking forward to the game. Emery has mentioned the Villa fans so often, Villa Park can be a fortress. But don't underestimate what PSG have to offer.

It'll be interesting if Villa get an early goal, being at home. We talk about Morgan Rogers, if Villa are to do anything it's about those types of players, people who are really enjoying their football at the moment and full of confidence.

PSG are strong, they look like a together team. Previously with the likes of Kylian Mbappe it was about what he needed to get the best out of him. This is a team that is so brave by playing out, pressing, committing bodies forward.

    5) Aston Villa's record against big names

Aston Villa have posted some big wins this season. Could they add to that list tonight?

Unai Emery's side beat Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League in December. They also posted an impressive win against Chelsea and a 2-2 draw against leaders Liverpool in February.

In the Champions League, their record is even more impressive.

They beat German giants Bayern Munich 1-0 in the league phase in October and also beat Italy's Bologna 2-0 and Scottish champions Celtic 4-2.

I really believe Villa have a very good chance tonight. Villa Park will be bouncing and PSG showed some signs of defensive weakness in the first leg. As long as Emery plays a bit more positively (which they will) and are still defensively solid, I think Villa are likely to progress into the next round.

    4) PSG could have a rare off day

Paris St-Germain emerged as Ligue 1 champions earlier this month and are yet to lose a game in the French top flight after 28 games played.

They are also in the Coupe de France final against Reims on 24 May.

But that doesn't mean the Parisians cannot be beaten. In fact, they have had a shaky campaign in the Champions League so far.

They had to win their final three games of the league phase of the competition to squeeze through to the knockout phase play-offs.

Before that, they had only won once in their first six games.

After beginning their campaign with a win against Girona, PSG lost 2-0 to Arsenal, 2-1 to Atletico Madrid and 1-0 to Bayern Munich.

Luis Enrique's side were also held to a 1-1 draw by PSV and needed penalties to beat Liverpool in the last 16 - so that record should give Aston Villa some hope ahead of the do-or-die clash.

  15. Five ways Aston Villa can beat PSG tonight - 3) Watkins up frontpublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 15 April

Aston Villa v PSG (20:00 BST)

    3) Watkins could prove a different threat

Uani Emery's experiment of playing Marcus Rashford as the lone striker in the first leg in Paris did not get the desired results.

So, the Aston Villa boss could be tempted to pick Ollie Watkins as the one to lead the line for them tonight.

Emery said Watkins is "feeling fantastic" after he off the bench to score against Southampton in the 3-0 win on Saturday.

Watkins only played 11 minutes of the first leg but has a goal and four assists in the Champions League this season.

The 29-year-old is Villa's top scorer this season and has 14 goals and six assists in the Premier League.

With him at his best, PSG cannot take anything for granted just yet.

Optimistic Villa fan here. It feels like we need to start both Watkins and Rashford and just go for it. If we can get it to penalties, Martinez will do the rest.

    2) Asensio and Rashford can lift them

In Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, Aston Villa have two players who can perform at the highest level.

And they have been pivotal for Unai Emery since joining on loan during the January transfer window.

Rashford's career is once again on the up after leaving Manchester United - the England international has three goals and five assists in 14 appearances for Villa.

Asensio, who won the Champions League thrice during his time at Real Madrid, has also hit the ground running in the Premier League.

The Spaniard has three goals in three Champions League games for Villa, while also bagging five more goals and five assists across the Premier League and the FA Cup.

    1) Villa are excellent at home

Speaking before the visit of PSG, Unai Emery said his players will be counting on the Aston Villa faithful as they look to overturn the first-leg deficit tonight.

"We will be connecting with our supporters and transmitting the energy," Emery said.

"More or less, if we do tactically and individually good things on the field, the supporters are going to up our energy and help us a lot. They are going to transmit that energy always for our players."

Villa's home record in recent weeks is one that cannot be written off. They are on a 17-match unbeaten run across all competitions at Villa Park right now.

Emery's record at home in European competitions also makes for good reading, with the Spanish manager winning 11 of his past 13 home matches in Europe.

Villa have also won each of their past four games on home soil and has scored two goals in seven of their past eight games.

Do that again tonight, and they have all the chances of taking the tie to extra time and then, it could be anyone's game.

Aston Villa hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-finals suffered a huge blow when Nuno Mendes struck very late to give Paris St-Germain a 3-1 win in the quarter-final first leg at Parc des Princes.

Morgan Rogers had scored the opener for Villa but their lead only lasted four minutes as Desire Doue struck the equaliser for the French champions before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia pulled them ahead early in the second half.

But are Unai Emery's men chasing a lost cause? Or do they have what it takes to overcome the impressive Parisians?

If you look at the form Villa have been in during this season both at home and Europe, the outcome of the tie is not a foregone conclusion.

So here are five ways in which the Premier League club can book a place in the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 1982, when they went on to lift the European Cup.
