Summary

  1. What is coming up today?published at 09:03 British Summer Time 15 April

We will soon be switching our focus to Newcastle's news conference previewing their game against Crystal Palace on Wednesday. Jason Tindall is in the hotseat as Eddie Howe continues to recover frompneumonia.

Later this morning will also dip in to Arsenal training as they prepare for their huge Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday. Phil McNulty is back for his regular Q&A. We will also look ahead to tonight's Champions League ties, including Aston Villa against Paris St-Germain.

  2. Have Fulham ever been in Europe?published at 08:55 British Summer Time 15 April

    Yes!

If you discount the Anglo-Scottish and Anglo-Italian Cup (which I definitely think should be brought back), Fulham have played three seasons in Europe.

Remember the Intertoto Cup? They won that in 2002 to gain entry to the Uefa Cup, but they were knocked out in the qualifiers.

They were more successful in 2009-10 when they went all the way to the final of the inaugural Europa League, a run which included an epic 5-4 aggregate win over Juventus (that Clint Dempsey chip *chef's kiss*).

The run would end in heartbreak though as Atletico Madrid sealed the trophy with a 2-1 win after extra time in Hamburg (and yes, that is a young Sergio Aguero celebrating with Diego Forlan).

Fulham qualified for the Europa League again in 2011-12, but were eliminated in the group stage.

  3. Have Bournemouth ever been in Europe?published at 08:51 British Summer Time 15 April

    In short: No.

The Cherries are arguably enjoying the most successful period in their history, having been promoted to the top flight for the first time in 2015 and remaining there for seven of the last nine seasons.

Their highest ever finish was ninth in 2016-17.

Just 12 years ago, the Cherries were playing in the third tier of English football.

  5. Numbers behind Semenyo’s winnerpublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 15 April

    Bournemouth 1-0 Fulham

Antoine Semenyo’s winner for Bournemouth against Fulham, timed at 53 seconds, is their third-earliest goal in the Premier League after Philip Billing against Arsenal in March 2023 (9 seconds) and Matt Ritchie against Tottenham in October 2015 (49 seconds).

It was the Cherries winger's eighth Premier League goal of the season, his joint-best-ever return from a single league campaign, level with his tally last season and also 2021-22 with Bristol City in the Championship.

Since the start of last season, he one of four Premier League players to score at least eight goals with both his right foot (8) and left foot (8) along with Jean-Philippe Mateta (19R, 9L), Yoane Wissa (15R, 8L) and Chris Wood (13R, 8L).

Fulham are consistently inconsistent. But we have said that about so many teams this season.

This Premier League season, no single team has been able to keep it together for long periods of time. Fulham have followed that category as well. They are looking to push on now and they are looking to progress and move on as a club.

There was a bit of uncertainty around January with some players potentially being picked up by other clubs but they were able to hold onto them.

Fulham is a great place. If they can play in Europe again, it will be amazing. My time there was sensational - a wonderful experience.

The club will love to have the opportunity to have a European run again because it will make for some amazing nights.

Lots of love for Nuno on the texts, which is perfectly understandable. Forest finished 17th last season remember.

Silva and Iraola have both had fantastic seasons, but for me I feel Nuno takes it for the fantastic season he has had with Forest. What is clear however, is that none of the traditional top clubs deserve manager of the season. Slot has a decent argument for potentially winning the league in his first season, but I'd say any of Silva, Iraola or Nuno are more deserving.

    Aly

Firm no for Iraola and Silva as manager of the season. What they’ve done to secure Prem football has been nothing short of miraculous, but Santo taking Forest from relegation fodder to UCL spots and an FA Cup semi-final (at least) is just too good. Forest fans in dreamland. From a very jealous Chelsea fan!

  9. 'Bournemouth are back on track'published at 08:19 British Summer Time 15 April

    Bournemouth 1-0 Fulham

    Stephen Kelly

Bournemouth had almost dropped off. At one point, we were talking about them being the team of the season but they went through a phase where they just couldn't get going.

That win last night keeps them in contention for European places potentially but it obviously depends on what happens in front of them.

Fulham played really well. They were looking to come away with a result last night but they are also still in with a chance because of how things have turned out - with Newcastle winning the EFL Cup and Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest still in the FA Cup.

There's still a lot to play for in terms of European qualification in that top 10 and Bournemouth are back on track with that win.

Totally agree, Jon. What is football without hope?

The clubs you mention thoroughly deserve to be where they are in the table.

It would be fantastic to see Bournemouth qualify for Europe. So often, clubs with smaller stadiums and limited fan bases are written off as not being capable of challenging for European football, but this season has proven that you don't have to be part of the self appointed 'elite' to be in contention for the top spots. Only two of the original Super League clubs are guaranteed to make the Champions League, and Spurs and United aren't anywhere near it. May Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth serve as an inspiration to those teams that want to challenge the status quo!

From around 09:30 BST will have updates from Newcastle's news conference, which will likely be taken by assistant boss Jason Tindall as Eddie Howe recovers from pneumonia.

We will also dip in to Arsenal training as they prepare for their huge Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday. Phil McNulty is back for his regular Q&A. We will also look ahead to tonight's Champions League ties, including Aston Villa against Paris St-Germain.

Oh, and we will bring you any breaking news as it happens.

Given the fine seasons enjoyed by Fulham and Bournemouth, surely Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola are contenders for manager of the season? So far at least...

Hard yes? Or firm no? I will leave that for you to decide.

  14. 'Bournemouth will have a bounce in their step'published at 07:46 British Summer Time 15 April

    Bournemouth 1-0 Fulham

    Emily Salley
    BBC Sport

You could say this game fell into the 'six-pointer' category.

A victory would have seen Fulham pull six points clear of Bournemouth, boosting their chances of European football next season and denting the Cherries' dreams.

But the Cottagers couldn't make it count.

A slow and sloppy start that saw Antoine Semenyo fire home a 53-second opener ultimately proved too much for Fulham, who drop down to ninth in the table.

Marco Silva will need to get his side back on track and fighting for Europe with just six games of the season remaining.

Eighth place is likely to be enough for a Europa Conference League qualification spot, but after tonight's result, Bournemouth will have a bounce in their step as they look to keep Fulham at bay.

Fulham will host Chelsea on Sunday with plenty at stake for both clubs, before a trip to already-relegated Southampton the following week.

Aston Villa, currently six points above them in seventh place, will be their next opponents in the league before they welcome Everton to Craven Cottage.

A short hop to Brentford is on the agenda for Marco Silva's side on the penultimate matchday of the season before they wrap up their campaign against Manchester City at home on the final day.

    Fulham's remaining fixtures:

    • Fulham v Chelsea - 20 April
    • Southampton v Fulham - 26 April
    • Aston Villa v Fulham - 3 May
    • Fulham v Everton - 10 May
    • Brentford v Fulham - 18 May
    • Fulham v Man City - 25 May
  16. What is needed to qualify for Europe?published at 07:28 British Summer Time 15 April

The win was a significant one for Bournemouth as it moved them above Fulham into eighth place on goal difference.

While the league title and relegation spots look to be a formality, the battle for European qualification looks like it will go to the wire, with just nine points separating Nottingham Forest in third and Brighton in 10th.

Eighth place is likely to be enough for a Europa Conference League qualification spot, as long as EFL Cup winners Newcastle and the winners of the FA Cup finish in the top seven.

  18. Europe bid 'definitely alive'published at 07:17 British Summer Time 15 April

    Bournemouth 1-0 Fulham

Andoni Iraola has his eyes on the European prize after Monday's win.

"Definitely it's alive," he said. "If the season finished today, I think we would go to Europe. We have one problem: we still have six games to play. We would love to finish today.

"It's still very difficult because we have not an easy schedule. Even with the run (of fixtures), we are in a place to compete definitely.

"I'm very happy, I think we needed this win. It's a key game for us."

  19. Cottagers stumble to defeatpublished at 07:10 British Summer Time 15 April

    Bournemouth 1-0 Fulham

It was a night of frustration for Marco Silva as his Fulham side failed to build on last week's fine win over Liverpool.

Rodrigo Muniz, Ryan Sessegnon and Joachim Andersen all missed solid chances to grab a leveller before the break.

Despite charging forward and carving better opportunities in the second half, the visitors could not find a way past Kepa Arrizabalaga, who made two strong saves to deny Alex Iwobi and Sasa Lukic.

  20. Semenyo seals win for Cherriespublished at 07:03 British Summer Time 15 April

    Bournemouth 1-0 Fulham

Antoine Semenyo's goal after just 53 seconds was enough to earn a welcome win for Bournemouth that revives their hopes of qualifying for Europe.

Semenyo bent a cool finish past Bernd Leno after snatching possession from Antonee Robinson for his 10th goal of the season.

Evanilson should have doubled the hosts' lead 15 minutes later, but the he smacked Alex Scott's cutback off the crossbar from close range. The Brazilian also had a late penalty appeal turned down.
