Edo Kayembe's second-half penalty was the only thing to separate the sides

Watford extended their unbeaten home league record to 10 games with a narrow 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Edo Kayembe's penalty 19 minutes from time separated the sides after Rovers winger Ryan Hedges was adjudged to have handled in the area.

Dominic Hyam hit the crossbar in the first half for the visitors, who are yet to win on the road in the league this season.

Watford's win means they leap up to seventh whilst Blackburn remain sixth, only above the Hornets now on goal difference.

The visitors started the better team and should have gone in front after eight minutes.

Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann parried Lewis Travis’ cross into a dangerous area but central defender Hyam could only smash the underside of the crossbar from six yards out with the goal at his mercy, before Makhtar Gueye’s header was well kept out by the Watford stopper.

Watford grew into the match and just after the half hour Festy Ebosele’s centre pass perfectly picked out Kwadwo Baah - goalscorer in Tuesday's defeat by Leeds - screwed his volley well wide of Rovers goalkeeper Aynsley Pears’ right-hand post.

Just before the break, Rovers midfielder Todd Cantwell found himself in a yard of space 25 yards from goal but his strike deflected kindly into the grateful arms of Bachmann.

Fourteen minutes into the second half, Cantwell’s delicious pass found Rovers forward Andreas Weimann but the former Watford loanee lifted his effort over the bar under pressure from Austrian compatriot Bachmann.

With just over twenty minutes left, winger Hedges handled the ball in the area and referee Darren England took his time before pointing to the spot.

Kayembe swept his penalty to Pears' left, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, for his fifth league goal of the season.

The goal gave the hosts confidence and Baah fired over soon after from a tight angle following a positive direct run into the Rovers box.

Rovers didn't lie down though and will be frustrated their wasteful finishing let them down.

First, Yuki Ohashi's looping header couldn't find the target and then substitute Tyrhys Dolan volleyed over from eight yards in a crowded penalty area - signalling the visitors last chance of salvaging a point as another match on the road got away.

Watford head coach Tom Cleverley told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"The foundation you need to be successful in this division is clean sheets and home form so, we got two in two, today.

"We needed the response, we are taking comfort from playing at home. Today I was pleased, I've spoke a lot about consistency recently and about having that baseline of performance that you don't go underneath by doing the basics well."

On the penalty award:

"I certainly thought it was [a penalty] at the time. I've not watched it back but it sounds to me it's one of those that you feel hard done by if it doesn't get given but likewise them [you do feel hard done by] when it does".

Blackburn boss John Eustace told BBC Radio Lancashire:

“I thought it was a very, very good performance with and without the ball. I think we had the two best chances that we’ve got to put away with Andi [Weimann] and Dominic [Hyam].

“We limited a really good team at home to next to nothing and we’re disappointed to lose on a really poor decision from the referee”.

On Watford's penalty:

"I've seen it a number of times. I think it's a poor decision and obviously Hedges' hands are a little bit high but it's come off the lad's back, the lad wasn't even looking at the ball, so it's a poor decision that's cost us."
