"It's been a weird week without the gaffer [Eddie Howe] being in, we spoke today about winning the game and hopefully putting a smile on his face. We know he wouldn't be missing games if he wasn't seriously ill.
"The work we do week-to-week - we repeat stuff, it's repetitive, so we know our roles. We went into the game today knowing exactly what we needed to do. It's just his voice and influence that hasn't been there this week."
"I'm playing with a smile on my face at the minute, enjoying being out there. I love playing football, love scoring goals, when you do that you can't help but enjoy it. That was reflected in the team as well. It was a good day at the office.

To be fair to Bruno Fernandes he fronts up but to me it's just soundbites now.
He was talking about his team-mates and belief but what about his right-back Dalot who didn't put a leg out to tackle? I hope he is pulling him in the dressing room because he keeps talking about having belief in his teammates but real good teammates put demands on each other.
When I listen to Bruno, I have question marks about his leadership. He certainly isn't getting any help around him, it must be tough playing in that midfield when the expectation is on him because that's unfair on him. But when he's doing his chats about supporters and this, to me it's just soundbites. There is no meaning to it. I'm not sure this United group are an honest group.
The best players put demands on me. That's what real good teammates do. These aren't teammates, they are bluffers.

There are always pivotal games in a season and that EFL Cup game against Liverpool has just pushed them on. They know that they belong in these echelons and they want to play in the Champions League year in and year out.

"I've just seen a message from him [Eddie Howe] congratulating us. He was able to watch the game, and I'm sure it lifted his spirits.
"He trusted the decision we'd make, we've been working together for a long time. He was able to communicate earlier on in the week, then put his trust in everyone to put in a performance he'd be proud of, and the boys delivered.
"We had to make a couple of tweaks at half-time, we were a few yards off on our press. The lads went back out and delivered their tactical executions superbly well."
To be fair, Simon, this last week it's been glorious in the north west, and really rainy in Portugal.
So that's one bonus in the pro-Man Utd column.

Bit of balance if I may: good to see Shaw get some minutes, Mount is getting fitter, Mainoo as well. Today was always going to be tough for Utd, they played a few days ago so they were never going to go all out for a meaningless game. Zirkzee is a blow, but Thursday is a bigger game.

Manchester United have gone 1-0 down in 19 Premier League games this season with only Leicester (27), Southampton (21) and Wolves (20) doing so more often. It’s also the joint most games the Red Devils have conceded first in in a single Premier League campaign alongside 2013-14.
Since Ruben Amorim's first game in charge, only Southampton (59), Tottenham (53) and Leicester (53) have shipped more goals in all competitions than Manchester United (48) among Premier League clubs.
Manchester United’s 14 league defeats this season is their joint highest tally in a single Premier League campaign, also losing 14 games last season. The Red Devils last suffered more defeats in a top-flight campaign in 1989-90 (16 in 38 games).

What a season Newcastle United are having. It's a massive result for them today.
But where do Man Utd go? They have to finish the season strongly, in my opinion. For Ruben Amorim to start next season, he has to have a bit of faith from the fan base but if they keep losing and playing the way they're playing then the pressure really will be on.

Following their 2-0 win at Old Trafford in December, Newcastle are looking to complete their first league double over Manchester United since the 1930-31 campaign.
Manchester United have lost their last two away Premier League games against Newcastle, last losing three consecutive league visits to St. James’ Park between 1969 and 1970.
Newcastle have won four of their last five meetings with Manchester United in all competitions (L1), as many as they had in their previous 41 (D9 L28).
Each of Newcastle’s last eight victories over Manchester United in all competitions have been to nil – they’ve won none of their last 34 when conceding against the Red Devils (D5 L29) since a 4-3 Premier League victory in September 2001.
Victory for Newcastle would make them the fourth team to do the Premier League double over Manchester United this season, the most different sides to do so in a single top-flight campaign since 1957-58 (4).
Only Leicester City (14) and Everton (13) have failed to score in more different Premier League games this season than Manchester United (12), who have drawn a blank in their last two in the league. It’s the most times the Red Devils have failed to score in a single league season since 1989-90 (16).
Newcastle have won 11 of their last 15 Premier League games, losing the other four. Since the first game in this run (December 14th), no side have won more (Liverpool also 11).
Ruben Amorim is averaging 1.15 points-per-game in the Premier League; the only managers in Manchester United’s history to average lower than that in the top-flight (20+ games, assuming 3 pts/win all-time) are AH Albut (0.73) and Scott Duncan (1.00).
Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy has been directly involved in 19 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring eight and assisting 11. Only in 2015-16 with Coventry has he registered 20 goal involvements in a single campaign in his career (10 goals, 10 assists).
Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes has created more chances than any player in the Premier League this season (75). It’s the fifth time he has created 75+ chances in a single season in the competition, with the only player on record (from 2003-04) to do so more times is Kevin De Bruyne (7).
