    Brentford 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday

A long way to go in both games, but on the early evidence I'm afraid fans of cup shocks may be severely disappointed.

Both Premier League sides lead and have been on top. Brentford look especially sharp so far.

  2. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:13 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Southampton 1-0 Stoke City

Jack Bonham is back on his feet, and seems to be showing no ill effects as he makes a sharp save at his near post to deny Adam Armstrong.

  3. goal

GOAL - Brentford 1-0 Sheffield Wednesdaypublished at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Kevin Schade (11 mins)

Route one works for the Bees.

A looped ball from midfield sets Kevin Schade away, one on one with the keeper. Pierce Charles makes an excellent spreading save, but gets very unlucky as the ball rebounds off a defender and into the path of Schade to tuck into an empty net.

His first goal in 16 appearances.

    Brentford 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at the Gtech Community Stadium

Sheffield Wednesday have been without the ball for most of this match but they just went forward then.

The attack ended with Anthony Musaba having a shot but it went so high into the stand that a steward caught the ball.

    Southampton 1-0 Stoke City

Problem for Stoke - goalkeeper Jack Bonham is down, holding his left leg. He's getting treatment.

36-year-old Frank Fielding is the reserve glovesman for the Potters tonight.

    Brentford 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

It has been an even start at Brentford.

The Bees beat Sheffield Wednesday 5-0 in March 2020, in the final game in front of fans at the old Griffin Park. They would love a repeat tonight.

  7. 'It's all about mindset for Brentford'published at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Brentford 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

    Mark Schwarzer
Former Australia keeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's all about mindset for Brentford. It's about the way that they approach this game. You can see already that Sheffield Wednesday are more than happy to play a really high pressing game with a high line.

  8. Postpublished at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Southampton 1-0 Stoke City

The TV cameras have spotted Russell Martin at St. Mary's, sat right in the gods on the back row of seating with a coach alongside him.

He'll be feeling positive about his side's start - they have looked comfortable and now have a lead.

Lesley Ugochukwu tries to make it 2-0. but slices his shot on the turn from 15 yards.

  9. goal

GOAL - Southampton 1-0 Stoke Citypublished at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Taylor Harwood-Bellis (19 mins)

We have our first goal of the night.

Southampton wn a soft corner on the left, it is swung in to the far post onto the head of centre back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who shruges off his marker to head down and over the line from six yards.

Stoke keeper Jack Bonham maybe could have come to collect that cross.

    Southampton 0-0 Stoke City

Andre Vidigal tries an effort from distance for Stoke, their first shot of the game.

The less said about it the better, well over the top to whistles from the home crowd.

    Brentford 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

And we are also under way in London.

  12. Postpublished at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Southampton 0-0 Stoke City

Still on the subject of managers, Saints boss Russell Martin is not on the touchline tonight as he is serving a touchline ban for an accumulation of yellow cards this season.

Coach Matt Gill is the man issuing instructions instead.

  13. 'Nice youthful exuberance'published at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

Brentford v Sheffield Wednesday (20:00 GMT)

    Andy Reid
Ex-Nottingham Forest midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think that he [Danny Rohl] brings a nice youthful exuberance to it. If you look at his age, obviously he's very young to be holding the role that he is but I think that it's really good. If you look at his experiences he's had some decent roles.

  14. CLOSE!published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Southampton 0-0 Stoke City

First meaningful opening for the hosts. An Adam Armstrong cross from the right is half-cleared to Joe Aribo in the D. His left footed first time strike is low and well hit, but Jack Bonham is able to get down to his right and make a sharp save.

  15. Postpublished at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

Brentford v Sheffield Wednesday (20:00 GMT)

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at the Gtech Community Stadium

The atmosphere inside the stadium has just kicked up a notch now we're a few minutes away from kick off.

The pre-match light show is underway and the Sheffield Wednesday supporters are making a lot of noise.

  16. Postpublished at 19:54 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Southampton 0-0 Stoke City

Still not too much to report from Southampton so far. The hosts have flung a few crosses into the Stoke box, but nothing to trouble keeper Jack Bonham yet.

  17. Postpublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Southampton 0-0 Stoke City

Speaking of the managers, both Russel Martin and Narcis Pelach are under the age of 40. Part of the new generation of coaches coming through in English football.

Managers do seem to be getting younger - I recently passed the jolting milestone of seeing a Premier League manager younger than me when Fabien Hurzeler was appointed.

Anyway, existential dread aside, it has been a fairly quiet start at St. Mary's with Southampton dominating possession as expected.

  18. Postpublished at 19:46 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Southampton 0-0 Stoke City

Stoke manager Narcis Pelach cuts a casual figure on the sidelines, dressed in a grey jumper and beige cargo trousers.

The former Norwich coach, who replaced the sacked Steven Schumacher earlier this season, has won just one of his seven matches in charge so far.

  19. KICK-OFFpublished at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

    Southampton 0-0 Stoke City

Off we go on the south coast.

  20. Postpublished at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October

Southampton v Stoke City (19.45 GMT)

The players are out on the field of play at St. Mary's for our first game to kick-off tonight.

Stoke City, sixth-bottom of the Championship, are the lowest ranked team left in the League Cup. Can they cause an upset, or will Southampton get some respite from a tough league campaign by reaching the quarter-finals?
