Some good options out there for Saints - Danny Rohl, Vasco Matos, Sergio Conceicao - even Rafa Benitez is twiddling his thumbs currently. It doesn't need to be O'Neil or Cooper…

  2. Amad made the difference for Man Utdpublished at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2024

Amad Diallo was the star of the show in Sunday's Manchester derby, and it was his hunger and desire that made the difference in the end.

Even before United's amazing late comeback to win at Etihad Stadium, Diallo had been the bright spark for the entire game.

He was the one player on the pitch who was playing with freedom and fearlessness, and also the only one from either side who seemed to be enjoying himself and trying to make an impact whenever he got on the ball.

There was so much safe play out there from both teams, but Diallo was different and he eventually got his reward for his endeavour, first by winning the penalty that led to United's equaliser which changed the momentum of the game, and then scoring their winner a few seconds later.

Pep Guardiola's 'I'm not good enough' comments come less than a month after he signed a two-year contract extension.

Every so often down the years he has said he knows if he doesn't do well, he is at risk of the sack just like any other manager. No-one ever took it seriously.

Still, there is no real expectation that will happen. Guardiola has won four Premier League titles in a row. Manchester City won the Treble in 2023.

But he does have to find answers to this current downturn in fortunes. It seems inevitable at least part of the answer to a run of eight defeats in 11 games will come through the January transfer window as it feels like too many players are nowhere near their peak levels.

However, there is also a clear lack of confidence in his players. On Sunday, with City ahead against opponents who are not in good form themselves, a second half surge was expected.

It just did not materialise. Mindset has never been a problem at City. Guardiola needs to get that right. And for that, he needs to be more sure of himself.

The injury list and the busy calendar is out of the ordinary. Pep admitted he cannot find a solution and you never hear that from a manager. He knows he's giving those who want him out of the Premier League ammunition.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The way I learn is to keep going.

"I am not good enough. I am the boss, the manager, I have to find solutions and so far I haven't. That's the reality.

"We want to play better, create chances. But at the moment it's not possible."

Russell Martin stubbornly refused to change his style even though the results didn't change. Even five-nil down with a few minutes to go, they went from side to side. Nothing through central midfield, hardly ever. The failure was coached by him into the players. He should have been sacked weeks if not months ago. We fans delivered our clear message last night.

The writing looked to be on the wall for Russell Martin when Southampton fans held up a banner during the loss to Spurs which read: "RM: Get out of our club!!"

On the banner, former Republic of Ireland keeper Shay Given told Match of the Day 2: "It is harsh seeing the Russell Martin banner. Not long ago he got them up and was a hero. The Premier League is a big step up from the Championship."

What are your thoughts on the banner? Are the fans right to have their say?

    Man City 1-2 Man Utd

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, speaking to Sky Sports after City's defeat: "We deserved what happened. At this level a game or two is unlucky. We can't say this is lucky or unlucky - 10 games it's not about that.

"Minute 87 in a derby, winning 1-0 and our corner ends in a penalty for them, if we make these stupid decisions with three or four minutes to go you deserve to pay for that. Looking at the game I think there was only one team that could win the game, but at the end we lost.

"It's not one game, it's a lot of games lately. We have to look at ourselves. You can say oh t's a bit unlucky, no. It's the decisions you make. Today in the last minute we played like under-15s."

Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United: Guardiola says he's not good enough

Even writing this headline seems mad.

Pep Guardiola was full of emotion as he sat down in front of journalists for his post-match press conference at the Etihad Stadium last night.

He was as stunned as Manchester City's fans at the way the latest derby turned out. His team has now won one and lost eight of their last 11 games.

    "I don't have a defence," he said. "I'm the manager, I have to find a solution and I don't find a solution.

"This a big club and at a big club when you lose eight, something wrong has happened.

"I can say the schedule is tough, the injured players, but, 3-0 against Feyenoord after 75 minutes and we draw. Is that the schedule, the injuries? No. We have to win that game.

"Today we have to win because apart from Bruno Fernandes (late chance) nothing happened. So we give it away again.

"What do we have to do? Keep working. But I'm the boss, the manager and I'm not good enough. It's as simple as that.

"I have to find a way to talk to them, train them, the way they have to play, the way they have to press and build up and I'm not good enough. I'm not doing well. That’s the truth."

    Southampton 0-5 Tottenham

    Nick Mashiter

Russell Martin was under pressure from the start of the season at Southampton with the club unable to get up to speed with the Premier League quickly enough.

There is little shying away from the criticism he has received for his possession-based style. Southampton have given away too many soft goals, have failed to adapt on the pitch and their position speaks for itself but it has not been for the lack of trying or coaching.

Despite the struggles, the Southampton ownership have been supportive of the management this season. They had been present around the Saints' Staplewood training ground often, but after the defeat by Spurs, ultimately decided they had no alternative.

Southampton sacked manager Russell Martin after a 5-0 thrashing by Tottenham on Sunday left them nine points off Premier League safety.

Martin, 38, guided the Saints to promotion last year in his first season in charge, beating Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley.

But the loss against Spurs was Southampton's 13th in the league this campaign from 16 games.

Their only win this season was against Everton in November, while the St Mary's club have scored a league-low 11 goals.

"Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges that we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world," said a Southampton statement.

"However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations."

Manchester United struck twice in the closing minutes to stun Manchester City in a dramatic derby conclusion at Etihad Stadium.

Josko Gvardiol's first-half header looked to be giving City victory in a largely dismal clash until United staged a remarkable turnaround to give new manager Ruben Amorim a landmark win early in his reign.

Amad Diallo was United's star performer, winning the 88th minute penalty that saw Bruno Fernandes equalise after the youngster was fouled by Matheus Nunes.

As City tried to regroup, Diallo then pounced in the closing seconds of normal time to score from a tight angle.

It was a rich reward for United boss Amorim after he ruthlessly axed Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from his match day squad.
