Summary

  1. How can Everton replicate Goodison cauldron?published at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Goodison Park displayed every quality that makes it such a unique arena last night, with Everton manager David Moyes calling the atmosphere "red hot".

If anything this was a masterpiece of understatement from a manager who can barely disguise his delight at being back at Everton.

Even before the game, Goodison Road was packed, with blue smoke filling the air. One fan complained that he wanted to buy a souvenir programme but could not get anywhere near the programme seller.

Even Goodison's media room was packed with plenty of old faces, including Jan Molby and Jim Beglin from the red side, as well as Ian Snodin, Graham Stuart and Leon Osman for the blue.

Everyone wanted to be in on the action at the last Merseyside derby - and what action we got.

Everton and Evertonians will miss Goodison Park when it goes - and it is hard to know how the club will replicate the emotions there at their new state of the art stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

Genuine question; what was Slot actually sent off for? He barely had time to say anything foul / abusive. Yes, the handshake was firm, but barely lasted 2 seconds & was certainly not ‘aggressive’. If anything, the ref was trying to avoid / ignore Slot (or genuinely didn’t see him approaching?). I know players / managers get told to keep their emotions in check - yellow / red cards being the punishment. But the ref didn’t appear to have his emotions in check as he couldn’t wait to pull the card on Slot!

It was a fitting ending. Going back through history, the dogs of war and all these separate occasions where we've gone through the decades of all the players who have graced this field, to have an ending like that, the last-ever derby? You can't believe how it went.

"Listen to [the noise from the stands], that's amazing. They will remember it. I'm just proud of my team, stuck at it, [Liverpool] didn't create much, and we got the goal at the end," Tarkowski told TNT Sports

"We knew it was a tough game but we worked hard, restricted them to a minimum amount of shots.

"I don't score many so I thought it would have been typical if it was disallowed."

I’ve supported Liverpool since 1980. It’s incredibly sad to see the game end in handbags. It’s fine to feel frustrated but take it on the chin, use it to motivate future performances, and don’t lose your dignity. I don’t think it’s ok to celebrate in front of away fans - I remember Neville running the length of the pitch to do it at Old Trafford, but I don’t remember it causing a fight. I also remember Gary Mac’s late winner at Goodison and the Everton fans around me in the Top Balcony just shook their heads and left the ground. Good point for both teams.

Wow, that’s a crazy one that really. Curtis Jones is on the bench but yeah, I don’t know how the academy guys will feel about that.

  7. Liverpool line-up creates historypublished at 10:14 Greenwich Mean Time

Liverpool’s starting line-up against Everton last night had no English players in it - the first time they have ever started no English players for a Premier League game.

  8. Late drama, as late as it getspublished at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time

    Everton 2-2 Liverpool

Timed at 97:08, Tarkowski’s dramatic equaliser for Everton was the latest goal scored on record (from 2006-07) in a Premier League Merseyside derby.

It was also Liverpool's second-latest conceded on record against any side in the league, after Robin van Persie’s goal for Arsenal in April 2011 (97:10).

Just wish there was more fight from LFC players in the last minute of play than after the whistle. Really should have closed down Everton and prevented that cross. I will take the point. On to Wolves.

Everyone enjoys a fierce derby, but last night the players actions resulted in the Police and stewards being drawn away from looking after the crowd to separate players. Any punishment should reflect that involvement being needed and the potential impact on crowd safety.

Classic derby, brilliant result and what a goal to end it! Players are entitled to celebrate and the only reason there were red cards at all was because Curtis Jones lost it. Andy he lost it because of the goal and the fact Liverpool had blown a lead. As usual with Liverpool as soon as anything goes wrong they all start whinging! Get over yourselves, Everton matched you and got a well deserved draw

An Everton fan since 1965, I loved every second of the game Both side played great passionate football and went for it Discourse was wrong to taunt the Liverpool fans We need to maintain respect Liverpool are a great side and we were their match last night One point of note; Slot may now comprehend what the Merseyside derby is all about

  13. Liverpool fans goaded Everton with 'we won the league at Goodison Park' chantspublished at 09:46 Greenwich Mean Time

With time running out on the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, Liverpool fans took their chance to rub salt into the wounds of Everton supporters.

Supporters in the away end were heard singing: 'We won the league at Goodison Park'.

Of course, that came *before* Tarkowski's equaliser which sent the majority of the stadium into euphoria.

The point may still win Liverpool the title, mind.

  14. 'Referee Oliver lost control'published at 09:34 Greenwich Mean Time

I do think Michael Oliver lost control of the game today, I really do.

I think a lot of the second yellows and the red cards were just, but I just didn't think he had a firm grasp on the game today - the occasion, the magnitude, how aggressive it was going to be.

Will be interesting to see how Liverpool react to this because it will have felt like a defeat the way it ended. Momentum is a fine balance, and things like last night can tip you over. Happened last season after losing the derby.

    Nigel, Redhill

Disappointing end to the game last night, but it's important we don't get embroiled by that fight mentality, we need to play our own game.

  16. Everton inch closer to safetypublished at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time

Right, before we focus a bit more on things at the top of the table, let's look at the bottom half, shall we?

Everton's draw moves the Toffees 10 points clear of relegation and into 15th, tied with West Ham and Tottenham.

Moyes' side have taken 10 points from the last 12 available to significantly ease their relegation fears.

Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester - the three sides promoted from the Championship last season - remain in the bottom three.

  17. What were VAR looking at after Everton equaliser?published at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time

    Everton 2-2 Liverpool

A VAR message for a possible offside is displayed on the big screen following a goal by James Tarkowski of EvertonImage source, Getty Images

It was a long, long wait for Everton with the VAR running the rule over Tarkowski's 98th-minute equaliser against Liverpool.

There was plenty of confusion as Liverpool appealed to Michael Oliver for a foul in the build-up while an offside check was also carried out during the lengthy delay.

The VAR checked whether Virgil van Dijk was just about keeping Doucoure onside before the leveller while the midfielder's push on Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate was also looked at.

However, VAR saw nothing wrong with the replays and the referee's on-field decision stood.

  18. 'I don't think you could have scripted it any better'published at 09:17 Greenwich Mean Time

    Everton 2-2 Liverpool

    David James
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think you could have scripted it any better for the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

It started off like fireworks, the best team then took the lead, continued to keep the lead and then Everton showed all of their fighting spirit - quite literally towards the end of the game.

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed John Eustace has left the club. The former Birmingham City boss is set to take charge at fellow Championship club Derby County.

'While we are disappointed by his decision to leave at this crucial stage of the season, we fully understand that the opportunity to move closer to his family and return to a former club played a significant role in his choice,' a Blackburn statement read.

Liverpool fan here. As frustrating as last night’s game was (especially the referee’s contribution to it) I honestly can’t say we deserved more than a point. For Everton fans and neutrals it was a cracking climax, of course. But in the final analysis I think another piece of news from yesterday will have far more impact on the title race: the fact that Kai Havertz is out for the rest of the season.
