Thierry Henry running length of the pitch to score, and then running back the full length of the pitch to slide onto knees directly in front of baying Spurs fans, priceless! Nice visual reminder at every home game also to ensure eternally remembered.

It could have been different for Celtic, they had a goal disallowed after just 30 seconds through VAR.

They also had a penalty dismissed after the referee was instructed to look again by VAR when Dayot Upamecano caught Arne Engels in the 58th minute. But by that time Bayern were already 2-0 up, a quality striker from Michael Olise on the stroke of half time and a Harry Kane volley four minutes into the second half.

While Daizen Maeda reduced the arrears with 11 minutes to go, it only offers Celtic a glimmer of hope.

Last night's result for Liverpool is a distraction, it’s how they respond to it that counts. Titles are won and lost on the mentality of players. If they use the frustration and turnover Wolves convincingly then they will be unstoppable. If negative thoughts enter heads and they drop points on Sunday, then the door is wide open. Fielding weaker teams (against PSV/Plymouth) can break up momentum too. Long way to go!

    Ian Dennis

The rendition of you will never walk alone, where they just cut the music and let the supporters sing it, that was spine-tingling. You had that guttural roar ahead of kick-off.

When they got that late goal, they were urged on. The Celtic supporters played their part. But ultimately, I have always felt they needed to win to stand any chance of seeing off Bayern. Yes it was a spirited finish but a case of too little, too late.

  6. Celtic take German lessons to avert 'absolute thumping'published at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time

    Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich

When Harry Kane volleyed Bayern Munich into a two-goal Champions League play-off lead, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton feared his old side would be on the end of "an absolute thumping".

With the drubbing in Dortmund earlier in the competition still fresh in the mind, he surely wouldn't have been the only one with such worries.

Yet in their latest tussle with a German giant, Celtic emerged defeated 2-1, but "not broken" in the words of manager Brendan Rodgers.

In times gone by, a thrashing might have ensued after going behind, but this time Celtic scrapped until the final whistle in search of an unlikely equaliser.

There was a confidence and savvy about Rodgers' side, to the degree that Sutton - speaking on Champions League Match of the Day - said Celtic were "dominant at the end and probably feel a little bit hard done by that they didn't get an equaliser".

We knew it was a muscular problem but we didn't know how important it was because his reaction was quite good. We thought it was not a big injury but unfortunately he had the scan a few days ago and it is an important one. It will be around 6-8 weeks."

  10. What Slot can - and can't - do during touchline banpublished at 11:19 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool

    • Slot will not be able to communicate directly with his staff or players during the next two matches. He can, however, communicate with his staff via phone or a 'runner'.
    • Slot will be banned from the touchline at any point, meaning he cannot oversee the pre-match warm-up
    • Slot can deliver a pre-match, half-time and post-match team talk to his players from inside the dressing room

  12. Slot's second touchline ban of the seasonpublished at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time

Slot has already served a one-match touchline ban this season,

The Dutchman was banned from Liverpool's Carabao Cup clash against Southampton after picking up his third yellow card of the season during a 2-2 draw against Fulham in the Premier League.

  13. Slot used 'offensive, insulting, or abusive language'published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time

    So there we have it.

Slot was not sent off for shaking hands with referee Michael Oliver, no matter how uncomfortably long (or not?!) it was.

The Dutchman was dismissed for using 'offensive, insulting or abusive language'.

Slot will therefore serve a touchline ban for Liverpool's next two fixtures against Wolves on Sunday (14:00 GMT) and Aston Villa next Wednesday (19:30 GMT).

  15. How can Everton replicate Goodison cauldron?published at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Goodison Park displayed every quality that makes it such a unique arena last night, with Everton manager David Moyes calling the atmosphere "red hot".

If anything this was a masterpiece of understatement from a manager who can barely disguise his delight at being back at Everton.

Even before the game, Goodison Road was packed, with blue smoke filling the air. One fan complained that he wanted to buy a souvenir programme but could not get anywhere near the programme seller.

Even Goodison's media room was packed with plenty of old faces, including Jan Molby and Jim Beglin from the red side, as well as Ian Snodin, Graham Stuart and Leon Osman for the blue.

Everyone wanted to be in on the action at the last Merseyside derby - and what action we got.

Everton and Evertonians will miss Goodison Park when it goes - and it is hard to know how the club will replicate the emotions there at their new state of the art stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

Genuine question; what was Slot actually sent off for? He barely had time to say anything foul / abusive. Yes, the handshake was firm, but barely lasted 2 seconds & was certainly not ‘aggressive’. If anything, the ref was trying to avoid / ignore Slot (or genuinely didn’t see him approaching?). I know players / managers get told to keep their emotions in check - yellow / red cards being the punishment. But the ref didn’t appear to have his emotions in check as he couldn’t wait to pull the card on Slot!

"We knew it was a tough game but we worked hard, restricted them to a minimum amount of shots.

I’ve supported Liverpool since 1980. It’s incredibly sad to see the game end in handbags. It’s fine to feel frustrated but take it on the chin, use it to motivate future performances, and don’t lose your dignity. I don’t think it’s ok to celebrate in front of away fans - I remember Neville running the length of the pitch to do it at Old Trafford, but I don’t remember it causing a fight. I also remember Gary Mac’s late winner at Goodison and the Everton fans around me in the Top Balcony just shook their heads and left the ground. Good point for both teams.
