  1. Man Utd 'don’t have that guarantee of goals'published at 11:21 British Summer Time 26 September

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Laurie Whitwell, Manchester United reporter for The Athletic, was asked if he could see any positive signs moving forward for the club this season:

"There are sign of hope, they are creating good chances. They’ve got a good selection of young players but they just don’t have that guarantee of goals in the team, so you’re kind of hoping, rather than expecting them to produce these moments and go on a winning run.

"There are some flickers of hope but again, if it continues for too long, then the pressure will become too much I think."

I thought last night was a close copy to the Palace game in that we played well overall but couldn't finish or make the right final pass, to finish the game off. Mistakes for the equaliser can happen but it shouldn't have mattered if we'd been more clinical before it. Erik can't put the ball in the net for us, we pay multiple players a lot of money to do that for him and they're simply not firing properly.

Manchester United kicked off their Europa League campaign last night, which ended in a 1-1 draw at home against FC Twente. After the game, Erik ten Hag said the Twente players "wanted it more".

Dutch side FC Twente are the lowest ranked team in United's fixtures, in terms of the coefficient.

If we look at Ten Hag's European stats from an overall percentage perspective, European success might be an area the United boss will be looking to improve on:

    • Champions League win percentage - 16.7%
    • Europa League win percentage - 61.5%

    Champions League

    • Matches - 6
    • Wins - 1
    • Draws - 1
    • Losses - 4
    • Goals For - 12
    • Goals Against - 15

    Europa League

    • Matches - 13
    • Wins - 8
    • Draws - 3
    • Losses - 2

My concern re Ten Hag is he seems unable to change things in game, either tactically or with subs. I was at the Liverpool game and he stood on the touch line looking utterly bereft of ideas or inspiration.

  5. 'I expected a lot more from West Ham and under the new manager'published at 10:56 British Summer Time 26 September

    Liverpool 5-1 West Ham United

    Natasha Dowie
Former Liverpool striker on the BBC Radio 5 Live

Natasha on West Ham's performance against Liverpool after their 5-1 defeat at Anfield:

"I was a bit disappointed in West Ham last night, I think they’ve had a really tough start to the season. I think if the players had the energy that their manager had - I actually think he ended up pulling his calf on the side-line and rumour has it he was walking out of Anfield on crutches.

"He was real high energy on the side-lines last night, showing a lot of frustration as well and there were moments in the game that could have easily flipped the momentum.

"Overall I expected a lot more from West Ham and under the new manager it hasn’t been the ideal start for them. Winless in their last four games. I think they’ll be disappointed that they couldn’t make a better game of it against Liverpool."

Liverpool began their defence of the Carabao Cup by coming from behind to thrash West Ham 5-1 at Anfield.

It's pretty clear that under Arne Slot, this Liverpool team have a razor sharp focus in front of goal.

If we take the stats from last nights EFL match:

The Reds had 21 attempts on goal, 11 of those where on target. 10 goals scored and only one against after just five games played.

It seems the message is clear for Liverpool at the moment. Shoot on sight!

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui revealed that he has a calf injury caused by frustration after his team's 5-1 Carabao Cup loss at Liverpool.

West Ham started the game well and even managed to score first but, as the game went on, things drastically took a turn, resulting in Lopetegui's fourth defeat in seven games.

Lopetegui stamped the ground in annoyance and hurt himself in the process, opting to sit down for the remainder of the game.

"I have one little injury in my calf," he admitted after limping into the room for his post-match news conference.

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui, speaking to Sky Sports after his side were thrashed at Liverpool in the Carabao Cup:

"We don't deserve this score because we did a lot of good things. We made a very good first half. They scored an offside goal [and] we suffered the first goal.

"After we had 10 players, they scored more goals. The last 20 minutes, we didn't manage well. The players made a big effort. We were in the match until this moment despite the referee decision.

    "I'm sorry for our fans."

On Edson Alvarez's red card: "Second yellow card - it can happen. He can't play the next game. I'm very proud of the players who played until 60 minutes."

  9. 'Ten Hag seemed a bit frustrated'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 26 September

    Man Utd 1-1 FC Twente

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Laurie Whitwell from The Athletic said he was surprised that Eric ten Hag highlighted that FC Twente wanted it more:

"They’ve had really good moments this season. I guess if they are playing too many games this season, they are thinking they should ease off a little bit.

"I don’t know but Ten Hag seemed a bit frustrated by that and maybe he will reflect on the team that he picked and the substitutions he made. Maybe he could have made different changes."

  10. Erik ten Hag - Premier League recordpublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 26 September

Erik ten Hag was confirmed as Manchester United manager in April 2022, replacing Ralf Rangnick, officially starting the role in June that year.

The Dutchman's first game in the Premier League was against Brighton at Old Trafford, which ended 2-1 to the visitors.

Maybe the former FC Twente manager knew then what kind of challenge he had taken on.

Let's take a look at Ten-Hag's stats as Manchester United boss in the league:

    Premier League Record

    • Matches - 81
    • Wins - 43
    • Draws - 13
    • Losses - 25
    • Goals For - 120
    • Goals Against - 106
    • Manager of the month: 3

In his first season, Ten Hag led Manchester United to third in the table and ended their six-year trophy drought, with the EFL Cup.

Last season, United finished eighth, their lowest ever placing in the competition. However, they did beat their local rivals Man City 2-1 to win the FA Cup at Wembley.

  11. 'Another result that continues this awkward season for United'published at 10:15 British Summer Time 26 September

    Manchester United 1-1 FC Twente

    BBC Radio 5 Live

The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell was asked to give his overall thoughts on Manchester United's performance, after their 1-1 result against FC Twente in the Europa League last night:

"A familiar pattern really. In the first half they took the lead, Christian Eriksen with a brilliant goal but they didn’t keep up the intensity and FC Twente came out quite strong in the second half and the goal United conceded was really poor from a defensive point of view.

"FC Twente are the lowest ranked team, in terms of the coefficient that they will face at Old Trafford in the Europa League so it’s another result that continues this awkward season for Manchester United."

While Manchester United have shown inconsistencies and an inability to win matches at times in the opening months of the season, their problems are apparently not at the back.

In their eight matches so far, they have conceded just seven goals, keeping four clean sheets.

A year ago, United had already conceded twice as many goals at this stage of the season.

It is United's best start to a season at the back under Ten Hag.

  13. Hurzeler also has to 'learn from situation'published at 10:02 British Summer Time 26 September

Chelsea v Brighton (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler on his FA fine and first experience of a red card in the Premier League: "I know I will be on the sidelines for Chelsea and that will be the most positive thing I can support. I can help my team.

"Of course, I also have to learn from this situation: how fast you can get a red card here in this league, and it's learning process for me as well.

"But of course, the fine, we will accept that."

As for team news, Hurzeler confirmed striker Joao Pedro has been ruled out of the trip to Stamford Bridge, as he is still struggling with an injury, adding: "I’m not sure how long he will be out."

  14. 'Webb gave clear explanation' - Hurzelerpublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 26 September

Chelsea v Brighton (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler on what he said to referees' chief Howard Webb: "I think the main thing is they are very open. Howard Webb is also very open; he listens to me and gave me a clear explanation of the situation: how the referee see the scene, how the fourth official saw the scene.

"I think it's important to have a clear discussion on how I see these things and how they see these things because you should have a good relationship, of course.

"Sometimes I don't agree with why the referee gives a foul but at the same time, they won't agree with what I'm doing on the sideline.

"But for me, it's very important to have a respectful relationship, be very respectful, be very empathetic and listen and in the end, I hope we find the right solutions. "

Call me pessimistic, but as long as Ineos only have a 25% stake in Man United I can’t see them making much of a difference. They’re not going to stump up £100s of millions when the Glazers take the majority of profit from the club.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler on being charged by the Football Association with acting in an improper manner, following his red card against Nottingham Forest last weekend: "In the game, I didn't know what I got the red card for, and then I talked to Howard Webb, because in the end I heard I got this red card for stepping on the pitch.

"I think if you give a red card for this, you have to ban a lot coaches during the games, because it happens in emotional situations and phases of the game - it will happen, that you step on the pitch.

"Of course, we are all role models and we have to act like this but I think also, you should bring out your emotions. In this case, it was just to protect my player."

Hurzeler also confirmed that despite the red card, he will be on the touchline for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

The similarities between Man United post Ferguson and Liverpool post Dalglish are massive. So much noise and not enough clear thought. How the club functions seems determined by the tv studios around the country. Ineos are making big changes some time needs to be given.

Christian Eriksen was hero and villain for Manchester United as Erik ten Hag's men stumbled at the start of their Europa League campaign, being held to a draw by their Dutch manager's boyhood club Twente.

Eriksen gave United a first-half lead with a superb strike from inside the penalty area.

However, against a dogged Twente outfit, Eriksen was punished when he allowed himself to be caught in possession by Sam Lammers just outside the United box.
