I feel that if the Man United team had a more defined playing style and more desire the support would be stronger even if we failed to win. Players are just going through the motions, with no energy - like a "paint by numbers" and do not go outside the lines and upset the manager. Do what you are instructed, do not show any personality. That comes down to people management, not simply tactics. Ten Hag has no personality or creativity, and affecting the squad.

It wasn't just Ethan Nwaneri who caught the eye for his age on Wednesday - Arsenal also fielded 16-year-old Jack Porter in goal against League One Bolton.

But why was the teenager, who became the youngest player to start a first-team game for the Gunners, given a start in the Carabao Cup?

Mikel Arteta had limited options for his goalkeeper last night, as regular number one David Raya was rested after appearing to pick up an injury against Manchester City at the weekend.

Next in line would have been experienced keeper Neto, on-loan with the Gunners from Bournemouth until the end of the season. However, the Brazilian is cup-tied having played for the Cherries in the second round against West Ham.

Another teenager, 18-year-old summer signing Tommy Setford, was also injured.

Manchester United supporter: honestly, our team looks like a mid-table outfit (9th - 14th) with no character. Ten Hag appears out of his depth in PL. It also seems players we buy only agree terms if we offer higher wages than anyone else, meaning we can never sell them at a realistic price. We have talent on the pitch but no matching desire. The team looks lost.

Ethan Nwaneri scored his first goals for Arsenal on his senior debut last night - but who is the 17-year-old making the headlines?

Nwaneri made his debut for the Gunners as a substitute against Brentford in 2022, becoming the youngest ever Arsenal player, and the youngest player to appear in the English top flight aged just 15 years and 181 days.

He has been with Arsenal's academy since the age of eight and spent a full season with the Under-16s at the age of 13 years old, and moved up to Under-18s level at just 14.

Described as a "skilful, creative, attack-minded midfielder" by the club, Nwaneri is an established England youth international, playing in the Under-17 World Cup in 2023 and two Under-17 European Championships.

Teenager Ethan Nwaneri was the standout for Arsenal, scoring twice in the 5-1 victory.

After the game, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said that the youngster is full of confidence.

"You can tell he is playing with a confidence and belief and an understanding of what he needs to do on the pitch," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

"In his journey with the first team he is always ahead of what everybody expected and I expected too. He deserves that and he is part of us so he will have the minutes."

Teenager Ethan Nwaneri scored his first Arsenal goals as they cruised to victory over League One Bolton to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The 17-year-old, making his first senior start for the club, slotted into an empty net from Raheem Sterling's cross, before taking advantage of some sloppy Bolton play to pick up the ball from Declan Rice and roll under visiting goalkeeper Luke Southwood.

Nwaneri's two goals came after he had already played a part in Arsenal’s 16th-minute opener with a fizzed cross which Scott Arfield failed to clear and Rice dispatched a calm finish into the bottom corner.

"You can tell he is playing with a confidence and belief and an understanding of what he needs to do on the pitch," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, whose side will face Championship Preston at Deepdale in the next round.

"In his journey with the first team he is always ahead of what everybody expected and I expected too. He deserves that and he is part of us so he will have the minutes."

No, nothing has improved at United but for some bizarre reason fans still want to have faith in a manager who has no clear style of play, falls out with everyone and gets excited every summer cos there's a sale on at Ajax.

Federico Chiesa has had to show patience since arriving at Liverpool but the Italy winger made up for lost time under the lights at Anfield.

One month after becoming Arne Slot's first signing, Chiesa was handed his first start against West Ham in the EFL Cup.

He ended it with an assist after his acrobatic volley into the ground bounced up for Diogo Jota to score the first of his two goals.

There was a moment in the first half when Chiesa rolled the ball through the legs of Vladimir Coufal during another attack which generated almost as much applause from fans as any of Liverpool's five goals.

How many 5-1 defeats to Liverpool can West Ham stomach?

For the second successive season, the Hammers were on the wrong end of a Carabao Cup mauling by Liverpool at Anfield.

Last season it was Curtis Jones (2), Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo on the scoresheet for the hosts in the quarter-finals.

Gakpo (2) and Salah were at it again on Wednesday, while Diogo Jota (2) also scored a brace.

West Ham have now lost four of their seven games under manager Julen Lopetegui.

Some news breaking in the United States, where LAFC have won the US Open Cup (the equivalent of the FA Cup) with an extra-time success over Sporting Kansas.

Former France, Arsenal and Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud put LAFC ahead but Sporting Kansas pegged them back and 40-year-old Kei Kamara, who had short spells at Norwich and Middlesbrough, sealed victory.

It is the first time LAFC have won the trophy and marks silverware in Hugo Lloris' first full season at the club.

Nottingham Forest loanee Lewis O'Brien was also part of the victorious side, having joined the club for the second half of the season in July.

LAFC are currently fourth in Major League Soccer's Western Conference, although they do have two games in hand over current leaders LA Galaxy.

This was Liverpool's first game in the competition since defeating Chelsea in the final at Wembley in February.

And Arne Slot's first midweek experience under the Anfield floodlights proved a happy one as the Dutchman secured his most handsome win since taking charge.

While Liverpool got stronger as the game went on, West Ham became weaker and Alvarez's red card - two minutes after Salah had made it 3-1 - extinguished any hope of a comeback.

Lopetegui was clearly unhappy with some of the decisions by the officials.

When Danny Ings had a goal ruled out in the 18th minute for offside, he signalled for the officials to check VAR - only to realise the system was not in operation at this stage of the competition.

It summed up a deeply frustrating night for West Ham, who visit Brentford on Saturday in the Premier League (15:00 BST) looking to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

In contrast, Liverpool have won six of their seven league and cup games under Slot.

  18. Man Utd's stuttering startpublished at 07:41 British Summer Time 26 September

    Man Utd 1-1 FC Twente

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag challenged the assertion there is an issue with mentality in his squad despite agreeing with Christian Eriksen that FC Twente 'wanted it more' at Old Trafford last night.

There were worrying echoes of issues that have dogged Ten Hag throughout his United tenure as the Dutch side came from behind to grab a point in their opening Europa League clash.

"I think often the mentality is very good from this team," said Ten Hag. "I saw in many games how high our work rate is.

    "Today I have some criticisms.

"It is not only the team that has to look in the mirror, I am part of it. You have to kill the game."

United had led through Eriksen's first-half opener.

They play FC Porto in the second of their eight first-phase games next Thursday.

Manchester United have scored just five goals in the Premier League this season after five league matches.

Only Southampton, Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace have fewer goals in England's top-flight.

All five of United's league goals have come from different players so far this term.

Alejandro Garnacho is the club's leading scorer in all competitions with four goals, including two in that EFL Cup win over Barnsley.

Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen have three each. Like Garnacho, both men scored twice in the 7-0 win over the Tykes earlier this month.

Bruno Fernandes (pictured) is yet to score this term.
