In what is Erik ten Hag's third season as Manchester United manager, his start after eight games has been his worst to date.

After eight matches, United have won just three, compared to four wins last season and five wins in his first season.

While it has been the fewest wins, it has also been the fewest defeats. Ten Hag did not draw any of his first eight games in either of his first two seasons. Already, this term, United have had three draws, losing just two matches.

This season has been top of the pile for goals scored and fewest conceded, as well as the most clean sheets. However, of United's 14 goals, seven of them came in the EFL Cup against League One Barnsley.

Is it one step forward and two back for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United?

After bouncing into the summer on the back of an FA Cup final victory, a show of support for the manager and more money spent on new signings, there was a distinct air of optimism around Old Trafford when the new campaign began.

Yet just seven games in, familiar noises are starting to come out of Old Trafford to explain away below-par results.

A smattering of boos at the final whistle of the Europa League draw with Dutch side Twente does not suggest a mutinous mood in the stands exists just yet.

But to hear manager Ten Hag agreeing with Christian Eriksen’s post-match assessment of the 1-1 outcome - that Twente "wanted it more" - does not bode well.

"It was far from good enough," said Eriksen. "They looked like they wanted it more – that can't be right.

"We didn't lose but it feels like a loss."

Christian Eriksen was hero and villain for Manchester United as Erik ten Hag's men stumbled at the start of their Europa League campaign, being held to a draw by their Dutch manager's boyhood club Twente.

Eriksen gave United a first-half lead with a superb strike from inside the penalty area.

However, against a dogged Twente outfit, Eriksen was punished when he allowed himself to be caught in possession by Sam Lammers just outside the United box.
