  2. 'That is our Achilles heel'published at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November

    FT: Everton 1-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Matt Beard speaking to Sky Sports on what is going wrong for the side: "It is converting the chances. We have had such a disjointed season with the injuries we have had. Sophie Roman-Haug was a big part in what we did last year so to lose her was a blow.

"The passes, playing the wrong side or going in when we should have gone out. We played central passes trying to be clever when we had overloads in the wide areas.

"If you look at the Villa game we converted the chances created, today we haven't and that is our achilles heel."

  3. 'The referee's decision has cost us potentially three points'published at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November

    FT: Everton 1-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Matt Beard speaking to Sky Sports: "What can I say? It's not a penalty. I get more and more frustrated. There are moments where the officials have let my players down today. It is not a penalty for them, it is outside the box. The challenges on Olivia Smith and Ceri Holland in the box warranted penalties for us.

"Ultimately the referee's decision has cost us potentially three points today. I said before the game Everton are a tough side when they get in front they are hard to break down. So for them to be gifted an opportunity like that, the referee has a great view, the lineswoman has a great view, no obstructions, and between them they come up with that decision.

"We need to do more in the box to take the chance that we created today. But I felt like my players left everything out there on the pitch and deserved to take something from the game."

On the referee: "There are four [officials] of them there that can help each other make decisions and nine times out of ten you ask the fourth official and their mind is already made up. It happens week in and week out, and not just for us.

"The FA come out or the PGMOL come out and have a big talk at the start [of the season] to say we are going to do this and that but then they are not penalising things like foul throws. It is just constant and ultimately it has cost us the game today."

Surely we need fully professional referees in the WSL before we can start talking VAR?

  6. 'It was magic'published at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November

    FT: Everton 1-0 Liverpool

    Everton

Everton boss Brian Sorensen speaking to Sky Sports: "It was magic. So proud of the girls, they really deserve it. We have been a bit unfortunate at times this season and today it was a bit on our side but we gave everything we had on the pitch. And there were some crazy minutes at the end."

On the penalty: "I haven't seen it back so I don't know but it is given and we took the chance. Still we created some opportunities on the transitions which was more of the plan today.

"We know Liverpool are super strong but they are direct, so if you nullify them then you can threaten, and we did that today. It will always become chaotic when they are throwing everything at you at the end, and they had a couple of half chances, but we rode the storm off.

On taking time to get going: "We talked about getting through the first 15 minutes because you can see that their intensity and pressure wears off. After that we started to play and we were controlled and composed in the last part of the first half.

"Then we had the game under control until the last 15-20 minutes which was chaotic but we got the win."

On Courtney Brosnan: "She is a magnificent keeper and made some big saves in the right moments when we needed her. Very happy to have her."

On what the win means for the season: "In the last two seasons we started our league off with wins against Liverpool so I was a bit unhappy we did not play this in round one. Joking aside we have never been worried. In our house we have been calm and we know the job we have to do."

On winning the last derby at Goodison: "I am happy for the girls. They work so hard and don't deserve the stuff that has gone against us. The core group is so strong and they displayed that today."

  7. Penalty decision 'decided the game'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November

    FT: Everton 1-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool's Gemma Bonner speaking to Sky Sports about decisions going against her side: "It's there for everyone to see. As players it is frustrating. The game is on TV, I'm sure you will discuss it. It ultimately decided the game today. There are things we can control ourselves but as players all we ask for is honest decisions and I'll let everyone else digress it."

On being poor in final third: "We've been saying that this year. We are creating chances but it's just not going in for us. We know we have the quality within the team. Once we get that goal I'm sure the others will come. We started well, got after them and had a lot of chances but you have to put the chances away and make them count.

"Everyone is gutted. We had the decision go against us but there are a lot of things we can do better."

  8. 'We really needed a win'published at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November

    FT: Everton 1-0 Liverpool

    Everton

Everton keeper Courtney Brosnan speaking to Sky Sports: "We're just delighted to get the first win of the season. We know it's a massive game against Liverpool. Really happy to keep the clean sheet and get the win."

On getting first win of season in final WSL derby at Goodison Park: "It's amazing. We knew we really needed a win. Where we are in the table we don't feel reflects our capabilities. That can really kickstart our season. It's always special to be at Goodison so we are really happy to send it off with a win."

On what it means being off bottom of table: "It's massive credit to the team. We come in every day and work really hard. I'm really proud of the girls. It wasn't an easy game but we really stuck it out and stuck together and got the win we deserved.

"It's a great win for us but it's just one win. We need to take that momentum and keep moving forward."

  12. What does Everton's win do to the WSL table?published at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November

    Everton are off the bottom.

Aston Villa's earlier win over Crystal Palace means it is the Eagles who are now propping up the rest of the table.

    But it's so, so tight.

Of course, we can't forget that the winning goal at Goodison Park came from a very, very controversial penalty.

Fuka Nagano was penalised for tripping Honoka Hayashi in the first half, a foul which looked to have taken place outside of the box.

We will surely hear plenty more on that from both camps shortly.

    • 17 shots
    • Six shots on target
    • Zero goals
    • Zero points

And their unbeaten run away from home in the WSL is halted at eight games by their arch rivals.

A HUGE win for Everton. It moves them off the bottom of the table and marks the end of their WSL history at Goodison.

The celebrations from the players and Brian Sorensen are big. He roared at the full-time whistle and was hugged by staff members.

Matt Beard stood still next to him, bowed his head and shook it frustratingly.
