What a story that would have been... Former Liverpool forward Melissa Lawley coming close to scoring for Everton in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Aston Villa are pushing for that all-important third.

They curl in a corner which a Villa player nods into the ground and wide.

Former red Melissa Lawley is the latest Everton player to take aim.

She latches onto a loose ball just shy of the box and let's fly but Teagan Micah is on hand to parry it away.

Toni Payne has been a real livewire in this opening half hour or so.

Gemma Bonner has got a real job on her hands to keep the Everton forward quiet this afternoon.

That is what Everton's game plan has been in recent Merseyside derbies and it has worked - hit Liverpool on the counter-attack.

It's a great run from Toni Payne and she isn't far away. It was a real chance that finally got the Everton fans off their seats.

Toni Payne is released in behind and she races towards the Liverpool box, side stepping Gemma Bonner and curling a shot towards the far top corner.

It's a good effort but it the ball drops just wide of the upright.

Two chances for Aston Villa's Gabi Nunes but her first shot is wide and her second is blocked.

Rachel Day also has an effort fly off target.

Good side to side passing from Liverpool to work an opening for a cross into the box and Taylor Hinds is there at the back post.

The skipper shoots on the turn but her effort rolls agonisingly wide of the target.

Manchester United's Grace Clinton picks the ball up on the edge of the box but her pass forward for Geyse is too heavy.

United are getting closer though.

These are two of the most defensively solid sides in the league, and so far in this game defences have been definitely on top.

The last two games between Leicester and Man Utd at King Power Stadium have ended 1-0 to the visitors. I would not be surprised if today turned out to be a one-goal game too.

Liverpool assistant manager Scott Rogers has come out to the edge of the dugout to pass on some analysis to Matt Beard.

Rogers was actually in charge of Liverpool the last time they won a game away at Everton in the WSL back in September 2017.

Clare Wheeler and Melissa Lawley combine well down the left hand side but the cross from the former Liverpool winger is cleared well by Gemma Bonner.

Better from Leicester. They win a wide free-kick which they whip into the middle, but a blue shirt heads just wide.

Aston Villa continue to pass the ball around, but they don't look that motivated to grab a third.

Will their lack of urgency come back to bite?

Both Brian Sorensen and Matt Beard are vocal managers on the touchline and you can hear their shouts from up near the gantry.

It's a wet, cold and gloomy day in Liverpool and so far there hasn't been much to brighten things up on the pitch.

Olivia Smith looks to dart into the box on the left hand side but the Belgian steps in with her long left leg to kick the ball off the Canadian and out for a goal kick.

Manchester United have found some rhythm now. Leicester are struggling to get out.

Liverpool have the ball in the net but it won't count.

They execute an excellent high press in the Everton defensive third to win the ball back and it is eventually lobbed over the top of Courtney Brosnan.

Olivia Smith is deemed to have backed into Brosnan though and the hosts are awarded a free kick.
