OK, OK. As much fun as it is to compare Micky Van de Ven to Usain Bolt, as Richard from Cornwall has pointed out, Usain Bolt's top speed when he broke the 100m record in 2009 was 44.72km/h, between the 60m - 80m part of the sprint.

    Micky's got work to do.

  12. Van de Ven tops speed charts againpublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 1 October 2024

He's in Troy's Team of the Week for the second time - it's been an eye-catching start to the season for Tottenham's Micky Van de Ven.

I say eye-catching, but actually, blink and you'll miss him. Just like last season, he's top of the table again for top speeds reached by players this season.

He's clocked 37.12km/h (23.07mph) already this season, after hitting 37.38km/h last season. In context, Usain Bolt ran his 9.58s 100m world record in 37.58km/h in 2009. This has blown our minds, somewhat.

  13. Best defensive partnerships in the Premier League?published at 11:34 British Summer Time 1 October 2024

Does Chris Sutton have a point?

Should Romero and Van de Ven be in the conversation?

Liverpool's defensive record is the best this season - conceding just twice in their six games. Is that down to Konate and Van Dijk?

What about Saliba and Gabriel? They've conceded five, just as Spurs have, as well as Nottingham Forest (Murillo and Milenković) and Fulham (Bassey and Andersen).

Let us know who you think should be in the argument using the usual channels.

  14. 'You need to be talking about them'published at 11:26 British Summer Time 1 October 2024

Talking on the Monday Night Club, Chris Sutton thinks that Tottenham’s defensive centre-back pairing must be in the discussion, when it comes to who are the best in the Premier League right now:

The centre-back debate is fascinating because we talk about Gabriel and [William] Saliba being the best partnership in the Premier League. I’m not going to argue with that but they always have a full-back or both full backs next to them.

When you look at [Cristian] Romero and [Micky] Van de Ven, they are under pressure every game they play as a consequence of the style that Tottenham play.

There’s a strong argument that those two are probably under more pressure than any other partnership in the Premier League. You need to be talking about them potentially being the best in the league.

  15. Troy Deeney's Premier League team of the week: Defenderspublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 1 October 2024

Justin James (Leicester City): I don't remember him having much to do defensively, with all the troubles coming down Arsenal's right. He then popped in the second half with a decent header for his first goal, while the volley he hit to equalise was unbelievable. So much could've gone wrong with that but the technique was excellent.

Micky van de Ven (Tottenham Hotspur): This is the second time he's been in my team of the week already. Defensively he's just a joke, I'm so impressed. His pace gets a lot of plaudits but the way he defends, the way he sees situations and covers his full-backs is excellent. And obviously another assist to add to a clean sheet in the win at Manchester United, so perfect for him.

Joachim Andersen (Fulham): They were the only team to get a clean sheet having played 11 v 11 at Nottingham Forest. They were excellent, he was excellent. The Dane been a real strong addition for Fulham. He has a passing ability which is quite under-rated. He hit some lovely diagonal balls which got them moving forward.

Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City): He scored a lovely goal and I thought the Croatian was really outstanding at Newcastle. I like the way he plays, he's a big strong boy who puts himself about, but he obviously also has that lovely footwork to get the goal.

Mads Hermansen (Leicester City): I know he was on the losing team but he made five world-class saves that kept Leicester in the game against Arsenal and gave them a chance of taking something from it. Honestly, it was one of the best performances I've seen from a goalkeeper on a losing team in my life.

    Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool defender on Sky Sports

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher on Manchester United's defensive problems and new signing Matthijs de Ligt:

"I've noticed this about him and a lot of centre backs. I don't understand why they don't fill the space and come over. The striker behind him has nothing to do with him, that's Martinez's job. If de Ligt goes over, Martinez moves across.

"In every situation of that first half; two massive chances and the goal, de Ligt - the player they have brought in for massive money - is completely out of position all the time. So he ends up having to go flying into challenges and then leaves himself in a situation where he can get yellow cards and red cards."

When you become Man United boss, these are the things that people talk about. It’s the biggest job in English football. From me playing the game, every footballer speaks about Manchester United and what goes on with them over a weekend.

That’s what comes with being a Manchester United manager. I’m sure Ten Hag knows that but we seem to be here having the same discussions about them.
