Southampton have only won two games in the Championship this season after defeat by Preston
Preston North End inflicted more misery on Southampton as they won at St Mary's and Saints dropped to 21st in the Championship table.
The Lilywhites took the lead with a scrappy goal through Lewis Dobbin in the first half and doubled their lead late on thanks to Mads Frokjaer-Jensen.
Will Still's Southampton side have only won twice in the league all season.
After going behind, Southampton fans chanted for their Sport Republic owners to "get out" of their club, and booed their side off the pitch at the break and full-time.
The closest Saints came to a goal was in the second half, at 1-0 down, when Caspar Jander struck the crossbar with a curling effort from the corner of the box.
In the early stages, neither side dominated proceedings, but one man who stood out was Saints forward Leo Scienza.
The 27-year-old Brazilian unsettled the Preston defenders with his direct play and trickery, and just before the half hour mark he forced Daniel Iversen into a smart save, cutting in and curling an effort goal-bound with his right foot.
The away side had a great chance to score 10 minutes before the break as Dobbin was found in space just outside the box, but to the frustration of a team-mate in space out to his left, he opted to shoot, with his effort flying over the bar.
But minutes later he was able to find the net - after an initial effort was saved by Alex McCarthy, Dobbin was in the right place to tap home his third of the season.
Alongside the joyous Preston cheers, St Mary's then broke out into boos with a large section of the home fans chanting against their owners.
Saints started the second half with more urgency but they still struggled to carve out any clear-cut chances in their pursuit of an equaliser.
Still's side had their best chance of the game in the 70th minute when Jander curled a right-footed effort towards the top corner that hit the bar.
But the travelling Lilywhites were able to finish the game in style as Frokjaer-Jensen produced a fine finish in injury time to seal the three points for Preston who move into the play-off positions.
The defeat now means that Southampton have lost five times in the Championship this season alongside their six draws and two wins.
'Hard work beat talent today' - Still
Will Still says he 'hasn't had enough time' to fix things
Southampton boss Will Still to BBC Sport:
"We've been a bit naive and conceded two really poor goals, we've been out-experienced today.
"We have bags and bags of talent in the dressing room but hard work beat talent today and we didn't do enough to keep the ball out of our net.
"I know how it looks and how football works, as long as I'm here and people give me the opportunity to do so I will fight."
'We were terrific' - Heckingbottom
'If you could bottle that and take it away with you as a performance, we'd do that' - Heckingbottom
Paul Heckingbottom speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire:
"I think if you could bottle that and take it away with you as an away performance we'd do that.
"We can be better with the ball we know that, but we were terrific, we created good chances and we were very, very good without the ball.
"We were particularly good in the second half and thoroughly deserved it, it takes a lot of work and a lot of discipline for the players to execute that and they were fantastic."
