Kane is still world class and other countries will laugh at us if we don't play him. He provides a ridiculous level of genuine goal threat that scares defenders, and he also doesn't get enough credit for being England's best passer of a ball - look no further than his pass to Bellingham to win the penalty against Ireland the other day. That pass was obscenely good, and unlocked the most stubborn defence which had hardly been creaking before that despite all our attacking talent. Without that pass we may not even have gone on to win the game. He's our best goalscorer, our best passer, and a cut above the other options. If we don't play Kane, we'll be a much poorer side for it.

  3. Kane v Watkins - the resultspublished at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    The results are in!

It's a narrow victory for England captain Harry Kane, who takes 16,866 of the votes (53%).

Closely following him in second is Ollie Watkins, who was voted for 15,022 times (47%).

Thank you to all who have voted and to those who have sent in your opinions on that debate.

How tight of a call will it be for Thomas Tuchel? Fortunately, he does have four months to ponder over it.

    Here's what we know:

Wales centre-back Joe Rodon and striker Mark Harris are both available and training fully after their clash of heads during Saturday’s draw in Turkey.

Manager Craig Bellamy has no new injury concerns to add to what is already a lengthy list of absentees.

Midfielders Ethan Ampadu, Aaron Ramsey and Ollie Cooper were all ruled out before Bellamy named his squad earlier this month.

Kieffer Moore, Wes Burns, Nathan Broadhead, Owen Beck and Luke Harris have all withdrawn since then.

  5. Kane v Watkins - the final countdownpublished at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Throughout today, we've been asking for your thoughts on who should start up front for England in Thomas Tuchel's first match between Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins.

It has been quite a tight vote all day, and you have just a few minutes to left to have your say.

In case you are just joining us, you can vote by using our interactive tool at the top of this page, with the final results being shown after 15:00 GMT.

  6. What is Wales' form like?published at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Wales are unbeaten in their five games under Bellamy, the most recent being Saturday’s hard-earned goalless draw in Turkey.

Although their recent record against Iceland isn't exactly amazing.

When Wales last faced tonight's opponents in October, Craig Bellamy’s side led 2-0 at half-time, but ended up drawing 2-2 in Reykjavik.

“We knew the game wasn't over, the game didn't feel like it,” Bellamy said. “We had some control, but it wasn't dominant enough to say this team aren't going to come back, not with the profile of players they have, the manager they have, knowing the history of the last 15 years, they are never out of a game.

  7. 'I'm expecting Wales to go and win and I think they will'published at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Wales v Iceland (19:45 GMT)

    Kit Symons
Former Wales assistant manager on 5 Live Breakfast

There are all these different variables going into the game but all players and Craig Bellamy can do is try and win the game and finish the qualifying group unbeaten which would be a good achievement.

They are at home, it will be a great home crowd. Iceland are a good side, we saw in the away game that they are a good team and we were quite fortunate to hang on for a draw in the end.

It will be a decent game but I'm expecting Wales to go and win and I think they will with the home crowd behind them.

I think the fans are enjoying it. I think Craig is enjoying it - he seems to have settled in really well. There are good noises coming out of the camp from the players, they seem to be enjoying the football and the style of play and I think the fans are happy with the way it's going.

To be unbeaten in his first five games is some achievement in itself. Looking at the teams we've played, we probably should be getting results but you've still got to go out there and do it so I think it's been a really good start for Craig.

You can only beat the team in front of you.

Head coach Craig Bellamy insists Wales will ignore results elsewhere as they aim for an improbable Nations League promotion in Tuesday’s final group game against Iceland.

Turkey are top of Group B4 with 11 points, while Wales are in second place on nine points and Iceland third on seven.

To win the group and secure their return to the top tier, Wales must beat Iceland at Cardiff City Stadium and hope Turkey lose in Montenegro.

But Bellamy has said: “Honestly, I don't know about the group – all I care about is winning this game."

  9. Postpublished at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

There's still plenty of international fixtures to come this evening, the final set of international games in 2024.

Wales headlines the billing from a home nation perspective. They host Iceland at the Cardiff City Stadium, 19:45 GMT kick-off.

A draw guarantees they go into a Nations League promotion play-off against a League A side, while a win for Wales and a shock defeat for Turkey against Montenegro would see Wales gain automatic promotion.

Let's next take a look at a big fixture for Craig Bellamy's side.

  10. Forest should 'absolutely' dream of European return - Winterpublished at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Nottingham Forest's strong start to the Premier League season should have the Reds once again dreaming of making a return to European competition, says award-winning football writer Henry Winter.

After two seasons battling to avoid relegation, Forest have made a strong start to the campaign under Nuno Espírito Santo and are fifth in the table after 11 matches.

Asked if the two-time European Cup winners could realistically finish high enough to qualify for one of the continental competitions, Winter said the East Midlands club have the pedigree to make it happen.

"If you look at the top of the Premier League table, it's only Arsenal that haven't won a Champions League or European Cup. Nottingham Forest have got two of them," Winter told BBC East Midlands Today.

"I can remember going into the old board room and just seeing the two replica cups up there. I started out covering the tail end of Brian Clough's career [as Forest manager] and I think European football and Nottingham Forest are not exactly strangers.

"So absolutely, why not? They are expanding the European competitions and Nottingham Forest could completely be in that."

  11. 'There needs to be massive patience for Amorim'published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on Monday Night Club

It's a nightmare first fixture (for Ruben Amorim) going away to the Tractor Boys. There are worse fixtures like Manchester City away or Liverpool but it's a nightmare in terms of perception.

The win for Sporting against Manchester City would have felt pretty good from the red half of Manchester and the expectation level will have gone up.

I still think there needs to be massive patience for Amorim. I think he needs a lot of time and in terms of expectation this season - I don't think they are a team capable of finishing in a Champions League spot. Just to see a team with a sign of progress and as Amorim said, a team with an identity moving in the right direction.

It will be fascinating to see what his first team looks like on Sunday.

  12. 'How wedded is Amorim to the system he played at Sporting?'published at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The New York Times, on Monday Night Club

The big test with Amorim is, how wedded is he to the system that he played at Sporting? There is a way you can make that work with Man United's current squad but I think it is a little bit shoe-horned in.

Ultimately, if you don't have the resources to do the things you want for nine months until the summer, then presumably you have to kind of find a make-do approach and it will be how quickly Amorim can find something that kind of works for him.

To me it feels like a relatively big shift to say this is the formation that I play in and it is non-negotiable which seems to be what Amorim has done previously.

I thought that Harry Kane's pass to Bellingham that resulted in the penalty was the best of the night and for quite a while before. Watkins isn't at the same level but if we have the providers perhaps he doesn't need to be. I was still frustrated at the number of times we killed the initiative by stopping and passing backwards when the moment could have been exploited. Surely the more you run at defenders the more nervous they become.

  14. 'If you grab the power you also have to accept the consequences'published at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Pat Nevin
    Former Scotland winger

David Moyes lost the power battle with Tim Steidten, (going under the title technical director this time) but with Julen Lopetegui struggling, more eyes are wandering away from his dugout and up towards the main stand and Steidten. They seem to ask, who actually acquired the 10 new players over the summer who have so far scored a meagre three goals between them?

In Moyes' 'unacceptable' final season the Hammers finished on 1.4 points per game. They currently sit with 1.1 per game this time round. It is still early days but that is the difference between mid-table comfort and hovering around the relegation zone.

The technical advisors are now finding that if you grab the power you also have to accept the consequences.

  15. Southampton Q&A: Manager change?published at 13:51 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Southampton manager Russell Martin leads a training session.Image source, Getty Images

Throughout Tuesday, BBC Radio Solent's Southampton expert Adam Blackmore has been tackling your questions over on the Saints' dedicated club page.

Q: I know we are struggling and lacking goal threat. A bit more directness when we have the chance to break would be good but with the squad we have would a different manager really do much better?

My honest answer Chris is that I don’t know and neither does anyone else. It could be strongly argued that you may get a cliched new-manager-bounce if that were to happen, but it’s just too simplistic and short-term. Ultimately the knock-on financial effects can be expensive and restrictive for the club. People always say to me that relegation is more expensive. But in the long run, imagine a change of manager not working again and even more money being wasted and players wanting to leave who were previously happy and enjoying their football.

We’ve seen it before. And if a new manager didn’t get the best of the talented players there are, their values go down along with the team and the club are worse off again.

That is one way of thinking. Another way is to say “we have to make a change to save the season and give us a chance of staying up” and there’s nothing wrong with thinking that either. But if you are going to build long-term success and have a consistent strategy and philosophy in the direction you want to go in, you don’t do it by lurching and changing course every time you hit a bump.

  16. An attacking injury crisis for Leicester?published at 13:45 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Leicester duo Jordan Ayew and Abdul FatawuImage source, Reuters

The latest When You're Smiling episode has landed and in this week's show, BBC Radio Leicester's Adam Whitty is joined by former winger Matt Piper and Foxes fan Mark Manfield.

Following news of injuries to Abdul Fatawu and Jordan Ayew while on international duty, the team discuss Leicester's growing list of absentees.

"It is a massive blow. With Jordan Ayew, he has been an unsung hero in different games this season. He scored some late goals and he is a great player to bring off the bench for us," Manfield said.

"Also losing Abdul Fatawu is a critical blow for us. We look at our options going forward and the type of players that can create something for us, he is the main man really. He is so dangerous when he is on his game, so hopefully it won't be a lengthy injury for him but I did see he had a brace on his knee the other day in Ghana.

"They [Fatawu and Ayew] have just found their form. I don't think we are left with loads of players who give us that danger in attack and Fatawu is a game changer for me."

    We Are Brighton

St Pauli released their 2023-24 accounts last week, revealing Brighton paid around £5.4m for Hurzeler.

With the Albion sitting only four points off second spot, this already seems like money well spent. And in context of player transfers, Brighton have a head coach with world-class potential for a third of what they paid for Jurgen Locadia back in 2018.

Yet the fee still feels like a lot for a manager. Likewise when Chelsea paid £21m to the Albion for Graham Potter. A genuine jaw-dropping amount.

The way it panned out was obviously hilarious with the Blues being mocked by fans of every other club for such a waste of money.

But if Potter had been a success and delivered trophies at Stamford Bridge, it would have been seen as a good investment by Chelsea.

Potter remains the second-most expensive manager of all time after Julian Nagelsmann. £5.4m makes Hurzeler the 11th most expensive, behind Jose Mourinho and the £6.9m Real Madrid paid to take 'The Special One' from Inter Milan in 2010.

All these people writing Kane off need to have a look at themselves. Reigning Golden Shoe holder and in the best form of his whole career, no other English striker is at 50% of his level. The drop off from him to them is like the Grand Canyon.

  20. Honduras punished after Mexico boss hit by beer canpublished at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Honduras have been ordered to play their next home match behind closed doors after Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was hit by a full can of beer when the two countries played each other in a Concacaf Nations League match.

Aguirre was left with blood pouring down his face when he was hit by the can as he approached opposing manager Reinaldo Rueda for a post-match handshake, after hosts Honduras won the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final 2-0.

Concacaf, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, opened an investigation and have taken action against Honduras for "failing to implement adequate stadium security measures".
