  1. Southampton Q&A: Is Martin 'only concerned with his brand'published at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Southampton manager Russell MartinImage source, Getty Images

Throughout Tuesday, BBC Radio Solent's Southampton expert Adam Blackmore has been tackling your questions over on the Saints' dedicated club page.

Q: Do you think Martin is doing more to promote his own brand and profile through his football philosophy, rather than changing his style and tactics to the betterment of the team, and more importantly the club?

It is an accusation I’ve heard and discussed, especially in relation to what happened at Burnley last season, but it’s not one I totally agree with.

I think there is a nuance to it, which is this: Russell Martin is coaching football in the way he believes is best and Southampton FC’s owners employed him based on doing it that way in his previous roles.

Most managers stick to what they believe in and know best, but for some reason Russell is seen as more stubborn and more ideological than other managers. Again, that’s not something I totally agree with.

What I do think is that he needs to come up with solutions to help the team and not sacrifice that help for his own ends. Let’s be honest, we all forget that no manager’s reputation is enhanced by losing. They want to play through teams, but they too often do not pin sides inside their own half when they are doing it, like Manchester City do for example. That is because they are not always in a position to press them near their own penalty area to win it back.

Kane has been a brilliant servant for England but he's also been allowed to play in games where frankly our dog could score in. He doesn't bring anything else to the team and the contrast when others play instead his huge. Thank you Harry and goodbye.

  3. 'Teething issues' or new manager bounce?published at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Ruben Amorim starts his Manchester United tenure with a trip to Ipswich Town on Saturday, but what can fans expect from the new United boss?

It has been a difficult start for United, who return to action from the international break 13th in the Premier League table on 15 points.

Amorim will have to turn things around fast if they are to recover this season and finish in the top six.

"I think there are going to be teething issues at first and this season will still be a bit of a struggle," said Joe McGrath on the The Devils' Advocate podcast. "That is based on what we have seen at Sporting Lisbon and how strong he is in his principles of how he wants to play the game.

"Hopefully, we can still do something in a cup, but I think we will finish sixth in the league. I expect towards the end of this campaign to see us start to click.

"I also expect there to be stars for this team that come out of nowhere but fit his style and formation. It might be players we have not rated in the past but step it up under him."

  4. 'I think it's just minor tweaks for Amorim'published at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Andros Townsend
Antalyaspor midfielder on Monday Night Club

I don't think he [Ruben Amorim] will be able to fully get his methodologies across because some of the players will be coming back Wednesday, Thursday and Friday so I don't know how much he can really get his point across.

I don't think [Erik] Ten Hag was far off getting it right so I don't think wholesale changes are needed on the pitch, I think it's just minor tweaks.

It's not going to take a million years to get the team that he wants and the way he wants to play. His biggest problem from now until Christmas is time on the training pitch.

There are times this season where I've watched them and they have almost been there. They have been creating chances but not had the number nine fit to put them away. His philosophy was obviously front-foot and to press high and there are times he wanted to do that but he had [Alejandro] Garnacho injured or Mason Mount who he hardly had through his reign.

He was a bit unfortunate that the players he'd spent big money on - he didn't have them available to implement his philosophy to the fullest.

  5. Squad selection issuespublished at 12:54 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

Ruben Amorim has several selection dilemmas ahead of the weekend.

Footage of his first training session on Monday showed Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo all involved after recent injuries.

With several first-team players still away on international duty and yet to experience Amorim's new set-up, it's not inconceivable that all three start at Ipswich.

Other issues to ponder include the middling form of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. Does Amorim hand them a clean slate and a chance to prove themselves from the off?

The Harry Kane situation is approaching the same conundrum we had with Wayne Rooney, where his game adapted more into a midfielder, the difference is, back then we didn't have the same level of talent and therefore Rooney was played anywhere just to accommodate him. Is Kane a better midfielder than Bellingham, Rice or Foden? Probably not, was Rooney better than Dier, Lallana or Alli? Probably yes. The type of forward needs to be playing to suit whatever formation we play, sometimes it will be Kane, sometimes it will be Watkins and sometimes it'll be someone else. We just need to be grateful we're in a place that we have so many world class options!

Manchester United officials are refusing to say who authorised using the precise footage released in a near seven-minute video edit of the first training session under new head coach Ruben Amorim, but there was one element that was particularly well chosen.

Firstly, the nuts and bolts - with the caveat numerous international players are still to return, so trying to work out who will start at Ipswich on Sunday is fraught with hazards, other than the obvious conclusion those involved have more time to work with Amorim and the 'new idea' he has promised at Portman Road.

New signing Leny Yoro and England duo Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo were all involved after recent injuries.

Shaw has not featured for United since February, Mainoo's last game was at Aston Villa on 6 October and Yoro is still to make his debut since his £52m move from Lille in the summer.

Secondly, Yoro and Shaw were on the right and left sides of Amorim's preferred back three. Jonny Evans was in the middle, Tyrell Malacia at left wing back and Antony on the right. The personnel might change but expect that to be how United set up at the weekend.

I am pretty sure Amorim will have singled out more than just Mainoo for a specific chat about positioning but that was the one released, as the former Sporting boss explained the movements and positioning he wants from the midfielder.

And then there was the running. Four times, United's first-team were shown chasing back after Amorim had given the signal for a lost ball and a counter attack.

Whoever decided to use that material has been thinking hard.

United have been repeatedly criticised for their lack of work rate and poor tracking back in transitions.

  11. Hemp's injury 'disappointing' but not seriouspublished at 12:30 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport women’s football news reporter at Wembley Stadium

I've just spoken separately to England manager Sarina Wiegman, who says it is "most disappointing" for Lauren Hemp on a personal level to miss out through injury.

"She was in such a good place and was playing so well - it’s of course disappointing," Wiegman told BBC Sport.

"On the other hand, I would say it’s better that if something happens, it’s now rather than in the spring and she can be back to her level again.

"I always think it’s disappointing but it gives other players opportunities to show themselves and play."

Wiegman said it was not a serious injury and is not related to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) issue.

  16. 'Carsley has made Tuchel's job quite a lot easier'published at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The New York Times, on Monday Night Club

Lee Carsley has played a really important role for England.

He’s overseen a transition from one squad to another and that has freed Thomas Tuchel up to not have to do that.

He doesn’t have to make some of the tougher decisions to omit experienced players for people that have never played before.

There are now a lot of players that have been called up and exposed to that environment and feel a little more comfortable in it.

He’s made Tuchel’s job quite a lot easier by all the players he’s introduced, he’s tried quite a lot of times, and he’s probably ended the debate about cramming the “most talented” players into the team for at least six months because we saw what happened against Greece.

  17. 'Gordon is the first choice on the left now'published at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Andros Townsend
Antalyaspor midfielder on Monday Night Club

The biggest thing that has come out of this is Anthony Gordon - for me, he’s the first choice on the left now.

There’s no "can we put Jude Bellingham there? Can we put Phil Foden there?". Anthony Gordon has the shirt at the moment. If Bellingham and Foden want to play, it has got to be in the number 10.

We’re so much better with two direct wingers, with energy and pace. That has been evident in Carsley’s games.

The biggest problem now is Noni Madueke’s performance. You’ve got four or five left-footed right-wingers vying for one spot.

I thought Bukayo Saka had it nailed down but then you’ve got Cole Palmer, Madueke and Jarrod Bowen. That is definitely going to be a problem.

I don’t envy the job Thomas Tuchel has now to pick that right winger.

  19. 'Pickford is England's one nailed-on starter'published at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on Monday Night Club

Has Lee Carsley made it easier by using so many players? Could Thomas Tuchel possibly be more confused about who to pick?

We shouldn’t get overly carried away. What have we found out? Madueke came to the fore and showed what he can do. It was good to see Lewis Hall playing at left-back, I loved seeing a bit of balance, that was a real positive.

Thomas Tuchel is his own guy and would he have paid attention to the way England had played under Carsley? It’s his job to but he’s a strong character and strong-willed - he’ll know what he wants.

The strength and depth England have, looking ahead 18-19 months to the World Cup, there is only one nailed on starter and that is Jordan Pickford. You can have a really good debate about every other position.
