Lille’s Angel Gomes has forged an unconventional path to the England team.

Hailed as a wonderkid by supporters of his boyhood club Manchester United, Gomes seemed destined for greatness at Old Trafford.

He made his debut under Jose Mourinho aged 16 but just three years' later was walking away from the club with tears in his eyes.

Frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities, Gomes rejected a new deal, making the "difficult" choice to leave to "better myself as a player and person".

He joined Lille in 2020 - and was immediately sent on a season-long loan to Portuguese team Boavista - before returning to the French side.

The move has allowed him to quietly improve his game while remaining on England's radar.

Gomes, who was part of the Under-17s World Cup winning squad from 2017, was also involved in the triumphant 2023 Under-21s European Championship side under Lee Carsley.

  5. 'If you’re a centre-half you know what Kane is going to do'published at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on Monday Night Club

I’m not so sure that Harry Kane another 18 or 19 months further on - he’s brilliant at linking he play as a goalscorer, but if you’re not supplying him with the chances he is predictable in the way that he plays and Ollie Watkins isn’t.

Watkins mixes his game up and runs in behind. I get the argument for Harry Kane but he is getting older and isn’t as mobile as he once was. If you’re a centre-half you know what Harry Kane is going to do, whereas Ollie Watkins will mix his game up and offer a threat in behind.

Harry Kane is a phenomenal striker but I think that is a real debate. I always thought he should have been in the team in the Euros but he can’t do the running in behind now. I’m not doubting his quality, but it is food for thought for Thomas Tuchel.

The discussion about Harry Kane is the most English football thing I’ve ever seen. He’s our captain, record scorer, and someone our incoming manager clearly has a great relationship with. He won’t just start over Watkins, he’ll be the first name on the team sheet and rightly so.

  18. 'Kane is predictable in a way which helps his teammates get space'published at 11:12 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Andros Townsend
Antalyaspor midfielder on Monday Night Club

He [Harry Kane] is very predictable, you know he is coming short but, nowadays, teams play man-for-man and when he comes short, a defender comes with him and that leaves a massive gap in behind which [Jude] Bellingham can exploit, which Anthony Gordon can exploit, [Noni] Madueke, Curtis Jones - they all exploited it the other night.

Yes, he's predictable, but he's predictable in a way which helps his teammates get space in behind.

  19. 'Inconceivable' England move on from Kane before World Cuppublished at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The New York Times, on Monday Night Club

I think there is a point that age ultimately becomes a factor - probably not immediately but I wonder if, as you get closer to the World Cup, the issue isn't so much "is it Watkins or Kane?" but whether it's more to do with managing Kane's minutes and making sure that you know that you've got an alternative or a plan B.

Not so much because he's predictable or not or because he doesn't do what he used to do - but in terms of minutes in the legs and his age, you're going to need to offset that and I'm sure Tuchel will be aware of that.

I think that it is inconceivable that England between now and 2026 will mature beyond Harry Kane, I think that is really unlikely.

Tuchel hasn't been brought in as a Southgate project manager, he's here to win the World Cup and he will do it with the players that can get him there the fastest.

  20. 'I think Watkins could be a greater danger than Kane'published at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2024

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on Monday Night Club

You can't dispute what a fantastic player he [Harry Kane] is but I just think there are other players that can do that.

When you get to the highest level it's about those moments in games and how you can be the most destructive, how you can cause the opposition the biggest threat and I think possibly Ollie Watkins could be a greater danger than Harry Kane.

I think he had injury issues in the Euros and I was all for getting him in the team but we are further on now, he's not as mobile as he once was.

I'm not doubting his quality, I just think it's one that Thomas Tuchel possibly has to think about.
