Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson on new midfield signing Adam Wharton: "I can tell you, we followed him last season, had him flagged as a good player who will suit our style. He has the qualities for that position. He's young, we have to accept he doesn’t have Premier League experience, it will be a learning curve.

"He has all the qualities for the player in the position, exceptional signing both in the short team and longer term.

"He could be available for Brighton. He has been training, same applies to Daniel Munoz. They both have come from clubs playing every week, no injuries, both available."

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson on whether Michael Olise will be available against Brighton: "I don’t know. I don’t think Olise will be out for this weekend's game. We haven't trained yet. Unless something happens today which I'm not aware or expecting, he will be available."

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson on Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze's injuries: "I don’t know with Eze. He came off [against Sheffield United] feeling tightness in his hamstring. He will shortly be going for a scan.

"Michael presuming, hoping he will be OK. It was partly cautionary why he came off. If he felt tired we told him we will take him off. He thought he was beginning to feel signs of muscle fatigue, he asked to come off. Eze didn’t ask to come off."

Rasmus Hojlund believes Manchester United have a "generational talent" on their hands in teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

Alejandro Garnacho, 19, has established himself as a key first-team player and Mainoo, 18, followed a run of eye-catching displays - including his first United goal in Sunday's FA Cup win at Newport - with a jaw-dropping winner at Wolves.

The midfielder's bold run and curling stoppage-time finish stunned Molineux and secured his boyhood side a much-needed 4-3 victory after they had squandered 2-0 and 3-1 leads.

"We enjoyed things, spending time outside together," Hoijund, 20, said of Mainoo.

"I think I've said before that us young guys, we have a little group and we're chatting to each other.

"It's very cool to have other young players around the team and hopefully we can set an era for the club and be here many years together.

"You can see his composure. He is so relaxed on the ball, so much quality on the ball. Now he's also starting to show that he has the scoring parts of his game as well. He's a complete player."

Nemail99: Whether they go through good or bad patches, Manchester United always seem to give young players a chance. Yes, some disappoint but a good number of gems come through too. They do deserve credit for that.

  9. 'Alonso would be crazy not to take Liverpool job'published at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

If Xabi Alonso gets the offer, I think he’d be crazy personally not to take it. I don’t think there is a better offer or a better job in the summer available than Liverpool.

"Even with all the legacy that might become baggage from Jurgen Klopp, you’re going to have a fantastic team and you’re going to be instantly competitive on all fronts.

So, why wouldn’t you take it? The only reason he wouldn’t take it is he might feel he needs a bit more time, might want to play a first Champions League season, learn a bit more on the job.

But, the reason I believe he will take it if it is offered to him is because I think he understands that Liverpool, for all their flaws and they’re not perfect, are a pretty stable environment under FSG.

In case you missed it, Joselu scored a goal in each half as Real Madrid beat local rivals Getafe to return to the top of La Liga last night.

The former Stoke striker headed home Lucas Vazquez's cross to put Carlo Ancelotti's side in front after 14 minutes and a clinical finish early in the second half secured the win.

Mason Greenwood and Borja Mayoral hit the post for Getafe but Real held on to move two points clear of Girona.

  13. Bring back Haaland? Fantasy football tipspublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    Alistair Bruce-BallImage source, BBC Sport

Erling Haaland is back. And that means he is surely the subject of this week's most popular fantasy football transfer.

If the Manchester City forward isn't already back in your squad, this looks like the time for his return - unless Pep Guardiola indicates that he won't play at Brentford in gameweek 23.

I was at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to watch Haaland return against Burnley, after almost two months out with a foot injury. He had one wild air-shot, one attempt to play a team-mate in when it looked better to have had a strike himself and one far-post header well blocked by a defender.

It doesn't necessarily mean you should switch him in for Julian Alvarez, though. As Statman Dave was explaining to us in this week's Fantasy 606 podcast, it may be better to have three City attackers in the coming weeks rather than going for any of their defenders.

The next Premier League manager set to talk to the press corps before this weekend's round of matches is Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson.

Palace's 3-2 win over Sheffield United earlier this week eased the pressure on the Eagles boss.

We'll have Hodgson's views on their trip to rivals Brighton from a news conference at 12:15 GMT coming up shortly.

  17. 'We're closer to a European spot than relegation'published at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    BBC Sounds

Wolves fan Ryan Leicester says Gary O'Neil's side "showed character and heart" as their five game unbeaten-run came to an end against Manchester United.

"I can't deny that in the first half the game should have been over but O'Neil has really instilled some belief because this team just doesn't stop," Leicester told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Yes, I'm disappointed to concede a losing goal in that fashion but the team showed character and heart, and it's our first loss of the year. I am gutted but I am really proud of them.

"We lost our manager a few days before the season and most people would have taken finishing 17th, but now we're closer to a European spot than relegation.

"It's a great season and O'Neil deserves a lot of credit for what he has done."

Everton manager Brian Sorensen faced the press before their WSL fixture against Chelsea on Sunday and confirmed Sara Holmgaard will be out.

"Unfortunately the dead leg that Sara Holmgaard got in the Leicester game is worse than expected," the boss said.

"We had a scan yesterday and she is going to be out for a period, we don't know how long yet."

He also said captain Megan Finnigan is sick and so he will take a late decision on whether she is involved in the fixture this weekend.
