What a season for English football. (Not just) Liverpool winning the league with a few to spare and YNWA serenading Anfield on a sunny day. But genuinely Spurs, United and Chelsea have all have a good chance of a European win. Arsenal still not out of it yet. The Toon have that trophy finally and who knows, Palace could surprise everyone a la the crazy gang in '88. Just brilliant.

  2. Six English teams in Champions League?published at 09:06 British Summer Time 2 May

The winners of the Europa League go into the following season's Champions League, regardless of where they finish domestically.

So that is very good news for United - who sit 14th - and Spurs - who are 16th - both more than 20 points behind the Premier League's top five - currently Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Neither of them will be in any European competition next season without winning the Europa League. It really is all-or-nothing.

However, a Europa League triumph for United or Spurs would not have any knock-on effect on any other English teams.

The top five in this season's Premier League are all guaranteed a Champions League spot as a result of English clubs' performances in Europe this season.

Man Utd and Tottenham are in the bottom half of the Premier League

  4. Should Tottenham be nervous about the return leg?published at 08:58 British Summer Time 2 May

    Tottenham 3-1 Bodo/Glimt

Any Tottenham nerves may be well-placed, considering Bodo/Glimt's previous performances in Europe.

The team made a name for themselves by inflicting a 6-1 defeat on Jose Mourinho's Roma side in the Conference League four years ago.

As mentioned, they have won 70% of their home games in the Europa League in the past three seasons.

Spurs may well take a 3-1 aggregate lead to Bodo for the second leg, but Lazio beat the Norwegian side by the same scoreline at home in the previous round and still failed to progress.

That quarter-final tie was the opposite way round, however, with Bodo/Glimt winning the first leg 2-0 at home then hanging on at Lazio to force a penalty shootout, which they won.

How the second leg pans out for Tottenham could well depend on which side scores first. An opening goal for Bodo/Glimt and it could be a difficult night for Ange Postecoglou's men, but the onus is on the Norwegians to attack, meaning Spurs could well pick them off on the break.

It is going to be tough over there. Bodo/Glimt have beaten some top teams at home, they are almost a different side when they play at home.

But I think Tottenham will score over there and that will kill the tie.

That last goal leaves me with with a slight sense of dread. I’ve been a spurs fan long enough to know that the team find new and cruel ways to punish ourselves. Still fingers crossed last night was enough.

  9. To the Arctic Circle...published at 08:32 British Summer Time 2 May

    Tottenham 3-1 Bodo/Glimt

While it was no major catastrophe after scoring three themselves, that late Bodo/Glimt goal does give Tottenham a little bit more to think about heading into the second leg.

And that is largely because of the home form Bodo/Glimt have shown in the Europa League this season.

Bodo/Glimt have already defeated Porto, Besiktas, Olympiakos and Lazio at their home in the Arctic Circle this season.

Their win rate at home in the Europa League since 2022-23 is 70%, compared to just 9% on the road.

    Tottenham 3-1 Bodo/Glimt

    Rob Green

Yes of course Bodo/Glimt were going to prove a threat at times but you've got to say that it has been a missed opportunity for Tottenham to put it to bed.

That is why these two legged ties feel like an eternity at times.

Even if you go ahead in a matter of second you just know there are so many twists and turns to go.

I personally thought Spurs were excellent last night as they were against Frankfurt (where has this team been since Christmas), and again the team changed the moment they lost 2 key players (Mads and Dom). If they can put same performance in next week then it should be all gravy. As for Utd the scoreline flattered them, they were ok before the penalty but the one man down and the loss of a goal made it too big of a mountain to climb. If both teams put out the same performances in the final then I don’t think Spurs have anything to worry about.

  12. A consolation or big concern?published at 08:20 British Summer Time 2 May

    Tottenham 3-1 Bodo/Glimt

Concerned about conceding that late goal, Tottenham fans?

Ange Postecoglou's side are still very much in control after a dominant first leg performance, but there is a small window of doubt after Ulrik Saltnes scored late to give Bodo/Glimt a potential lifeline with their only shot on target.

Spurs took only 38 seconds to open the scoring as Brennan Johnson headed in from Richarlison's nod down.

James Maddison doubled the lead after he brilliantly took down Pedro Porro's long ball before finding the bottom corner, and Dominic Solanke made it 3-0 from the penalty spot.

  13. Bilbao trips going fastpublished at 08:16 British Summer Time 2 May

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Given last night's results, it is virtually certain Manchester United and Tottenham will be facing off in the Europa League final - with a place in the Champions League the prize.

So, the scramble is on for flights to Spain from the UK, and to secure hotel rooms.

Uefa confirmed earlier this month that "the two teams that reach the final may receive up to 15,000 tickets each". Prices range from €40 to €240.

I did a quick check on a flight booking and hotel booking site and came up with a cheapest two day trip of £1650, excluding tickets and food, and transportation.

    It's going to be expensive.

There is now a poll at the top of this page, allowing you to have your say on who would win a potential Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham.

After the respective seasons both clubs have endured to this point, I imagine the likelihood of fans of either club voting for the other could be high...

  15. Sixth all-English European final?published at 08:06 British Summer Time 2 May

Statisticians Opta now give United a 97% chance of reaching the final - with 91% for Spurs - meaning an 88% likelihood of both being there.

That would create just a sixth all-English final in any major European competition - with half of them involving Spurs.

It would also mean six English teams in next season's Champions League.

I know the red card played a huge part but I thought United handled the crowd and pressure of the occasion well even when 11 v 11. It will need an equally good performance at Old Trafford against a very very good Bilbao team who are very capable of turning this around.

It wasn't just the cross, it was the little shimmies and the chops and the cutbacks.

I had to look twice because it looked like it was Alejandro Garnacho. It was so smooth, it wasn't stiff. It was amazing. Fair play to Harry Maguire.

We were saying before the game about what a great character he is - a big-game player who rises to the occasion and doesn't feel pressure - and we saw it in that moment there. He was unbelievable.

"I'm sure there are a few nicknames for me out there."

Speaking after the match, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said on Maguire: "Sometimes there are moments in our life when we have a difficult time.

"Harry had a difficult time when everything he did was seen as being wrong. Now he can enjoy it. Everything he does has been right."

After all the criticism and abuse that has been sent his way over recent years, Maguire's redemption story is great to see.

Impressive performance from United last night - but I'm amazed everyone is already saying they're in the final. They were good last night but, let's face it, that's a rarity this season - we've seen plenty of them at their worst. Bilbao with 11 players for the whole game is a completely different contest, and if any team can lose 3-0 or 4-0 at home to crash out, it's this United team.

  20. Man Utd were 'asking the questions' before penalty and red cardpublished at 07:48 British Summer Time 2 May

    Athletic Bilbao 0-3 Man Utd

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter on Football Daily

The narrative that will be suggested here in Spain is that the referee has cost them, but I don't think that would be a necessarily fair reflection.

Yes it [the penalty and sending off] was a turning point but even before that Manchester United, once they had taken that lead through Casemiro, were then on the front foot and they were asking the questions of Athletic Bilbao.
