    But they've got something now!

Jacob Murphy moves forward and Lewis Miley eventually stands one up to the back post and there is Matt Targett to power a header home.

Aaron Ramsdale gets a slight touch on it but I think the power is too much for him.

    Stunning strike.

  5. goal

GOAL - Newcastle 0-1 Espanyolpublished at 19:47 BST 8 August

    Edu Exposito (17 mins)

    That's an absolute screamer!

Espanyol work it well through the middle and the ball bobbles nicely back to Edu Exposito about 25 yards from goal and he HAMMERS it first time into the top corner.

    Wow.

One or two of us were scratching our heads about how Newcastle would line up tonight after Eddie Howe named two left-backs in the same side.

Lewis Hall made his name at Chelsea's academy as a midfielder, initially, but it is Matt Targett who has lined up in the middle of the park alongside Lewis Miley and captain Bruno Guimaraes.

It highlights the lack of natural depth Newcastle have in the position after losing Joe Willock to injury - just a couple of weeks after selling Sean Longstaff to Leeds United.

  9. CLOSE!published at 19:44 BST 8 August

    Chelsea 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Almost a second for Estevao Willian!

He powers into the box and goes for glory but the keeper makes the save.

Should he have passed? I'm loving this lad's confidence.

  10. Postpublished at 19:44 BST 8 August

    Newcastle 0-0 Espanyol

It's not been the best transfer window for Newcastle (so far) but the Magpies have the small matter of Champions League football to look forward to.

    It's not all bad...

  11. Postpublished at 19:42 BST 8 August

    Newcastle 0-0 Espanyol

Now, now boys, it's only a friendly!

William Osula and Leandro Cabrera get a little bit too up close and personal as Michael Oliver gives them both a telling off.

  12. GREAT SAVE!published at 19:41 BST 8 August

    Chelsea 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Lovely save by Filip Jorgensen who flings himself across his line to keep out Alex Grimaldo's free-kick. That's Bayer Leverkusen's best moment by a country mile.

  13. Postpublished at 19:39 BST 8 August

    Newcastle 0-0 Espanyol

Espanyol enjoy their first spot of possession as the ball is very nearly slipped through the defence for Roberto Fernandez but Fabian Schar times his interception perfectly.

ColPhilipsSASVCDSOOBE: Don't need him, don't want him, or anyone from Man Utd for that matter. He will bring his bad Man Utd mentality into the team which is not required at Chelsea. Get rid of Jackson and Nkunku and buy another, proven, decent, striker. Garnacho doesn't fit that mold.

  15. Postpublished at 19:37 BST 8 August

    Newcastle 0-0 Espanyol

Michael Oliver, who is known to be a Newcastle fan, is taking charge of this one tonight.

That's how you know this is a friendly!

  16. Postpublished at 19:36 BST 8 August

    Chelsea 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Marc Cucurella was spotted wearing a Didier Drogba Chelsea shirt on holiday recently. I'm off on mine soon. If you spot someone wearing an Arthur Gnahoua Southport shirt in Lanzarote, come and say hello.

  17. Newcastle to field two different XIs in two friendliespublished at 19:35 BST 8 August

    Newcastle 0-0 Espanyol

This has been a summer of transfer setbacks for Newcastle, but there are a couple of new signings on show tonight.

Aaron Ramsdale makes his debut for the club, following his loan move from Southampton, while youngster Park Seung-soo will make his first appearance at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe will use one XI for this game and another for the visit of Atletico Madrid tomorrow.

Dan Burn, Fabian Schar, Lewis Hall, Bruno Guimaraes and Jacob Murphy are among the regulars who will also feature against Espanyol, but Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon have been kept back for the friendly against Atletico Madrid.

  18. Postpublished at 19:34 BST 8 August

    Newcastle 0-0 Espanyol

Awful ball into the middle by Fabian Schar but Espanyol fail to capitalise as Newcastle find the overlapping run of new signing Park Seung-soo.

  19. Estevao and Palmer linking wellpublished at 19:32 BST 8 August

    Chelsea 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen

    Nizaar Kinsella
BBC Sport football news reporter at Stamford Bridge

It's a small sample size but Estevao Willian and Cole Palmer's link up has been everything Chelsea fans would hope for.

It has been natural, entertaining and full of flair. It's impressive given they don't share a language.

Academy attacker Tyrique George has also been excellent - as has midfielder Andrey Santos, returning from his loan at Strasbourg.

  20. Postpublished at 19:31 BST 8 August

    Newcastle 0-0 Espanyol

A decent crowd inside St. James' Park as Newcastle wear their third kit for this one.

Not 100% sure why. Maybe just because it's quite nice.
