My son is the assistant manager of my Fantasy team - I am Brian Clough, and he is Peter Taylor - and he told me to get Amad Diallo in this week.

Guess what? I overruled him, and obviously Diallo went on to score a hat-trick for Manchester United against Southampton.

It really was a case of United finding a way to win so late on in that game, because their performance for most of it had not been great, especially in the first half.

Being able to do that is important, so fair play to Diallo and manager Ruben Amorim, but it does not mean United have cracked it, or turned a corner.

I must say this every week about them, but they remain a work in progress and there are going to be lot more bumps in the road for Amorim.

This might be one of them, because Brighton are much tougher opposition than Saints were.

The Seagulls got back to winning ways in the league against Ipswich on Thursday. I fancy them here more than I do United, but I am going to go with a draw.

Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United must move away from being a team that thrives on transitions.

Despite Amad Diallo's late intervention against Southampton, Thursday's win was another concerning display from United, who have performed against stronger opposition but struggled to impose themselves in matches they are expected to dominate.

When asked if United are built to be reactive rather than taking the initiative, Amorim replied: "I think this is something that you can see from the past and we were, in the past, a team of transition. And we still are.

"You can feel it - to create chances in the final third, we struggle. We struggle a lot but, for that, I think it's the most difficult.

"I say that, before the game, it's the most difficult moment to train against low blocks, trying to create situations.

"I think it is a team that feels more joy waiting for the play and then, in transition, creating problems. So it's something that we have to change. To change, we need training. So to have time to change, we also need to win games and we have tried to do that."

David Moyes is currently scribbling down some notes about the Everton warm-up, before turning and looking at what Tottenham are doing.

Sean Dyche was accused of being too defensive-minded before he got sacked last week, but Everton got a little bit stuck between being hard to beat and pushing for a goal when they lost to Aston Villa on Wednesday.

It meant they were quite open and, although David Moyes' side had chances, Villa really should have won by more than one goal.

I think it will be a similar story here, where Everton's approach will be different because they are at home.

If they were away, I think they would be happy to sit in and soak up pressure, but they might be a little bit more expansive at Goodison Park, and I don't see it ending well for them.

It's hard to make a case for Everton to beat Tottenham, even though Ange Postecoglou's side are on a poor run too.

Antonin Kinsky did not have a great game in goal against Arsenal but it was a disappointing display by the whole team.

Spurs have fallen so low in the table - 15th - that they need a win, and quickly. This might be the boost they need, although I am not convinced they will keep a clean sheet, even against Everton.

Tottenham need to protect the two centre-halfs that are not used to playing as a pairing, one of them that is not used to playing as a centre-half. The two full-backs are pushing on, leaving the two centre-halfs far too exposed. They should be playing two defensive midfielders to give them some protection.

The best performance I’ve seen from Tottenham this season was away against Manchester City - offensively they were very good, but defensively they sat in a deep, low block as a unit, they defended as a team, they moved up and down the pitch as a unit, and they hit city in the second half on the counter attack.

It’s not being overly pragmatic, but they way you change it is protecting your weaknesses. His way (Ange Postecoglou) of doing that is attack. He protects his weaknesses by going forward on the front foot.

But they couldn’t do it against Tamworth, then they went and did exactly the same thing and you’re not going to be able to do it against Arsenal, are you? You look at the plethora of attacking quality they’ve got, they’ve got pace, players that can hurt teams.

Scoring goals is not a problem, you’ve just got to be more pragmatic in the way you approach the defensive side of it.

I was record signing at the time, Sir Bobby and Denis Law both said 'don't worry about the fee, just enjoy your role playing for Manchester United'.

That typified both of them, the way they spoke to you and said 'enjoy your football and enjoy the challenge'.

Law was a fantastic character and not too far off the King - he was an unbelievable player.

Fans have been laying tributes and taking pictures of the 'Holy Trinity' statue, with Denis Law at its centre.

One of them was David Carey, who first started watching Manchester United in the wake of the Munich crash in 1958.

"Denis Law has to be in the top four or five players in the club's history," he said.

"He was a brilliant player. The crowd just loved him. He really drew them into it with the way he approached the game.

"Arm in the air when he scored a goal. He was really charismatic."

The form of goalkeeper Matz Sels is giving Nottingham Forest confidence, says manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Sels has kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season as Forest sit third.

"When the team improves, all the players improve so Matz is one of the cases that he's continuing improving, more confidence, more vocal," said Nuno.

"I think he's giving us what we need, stability, confidence, solving problems and fantastic saves that keep us in the game, but improving. I'm giving credit to him but also the small group of goalkeepers - all of them are working very hard and this reflects on Matz's performance.

"I think the job of the goalkeeper is to give confidence to the team and I think Matz gives us that. His position on the pitch is always accurate and that is a big advantage to reduce the angles and spaces to the opponents."

Southampton are bottom of the table with just six points. They need to start winning games and quick if they avoid to dropping straight back to the Championship.

Their sequence of 18 Premier League away games without a win is the longest in the top flight since Aston Villa's run of 21 ended in September 2019.

They have scored just 13 league goals this season - that is the lowest of any side in the top five English divisions. Only seven teams in Premier League history have scored fewer than 13 goals after 21 matches.

Starting to turn it around today may be difficult too.

They are winless in their past 23 Premier League games against sides that start the day in the top four and they have failed to win in their past 15 top-flight matches on a Sunday.

No Premier League team has earned more points since the start of December than the 19 by Nottingham Forest.

That is built on success at both ends of the pitch, of course.

Matz Sels has an unrivalled nine Premier League clean sheets this season and has only conceded once in his last five appearances.

While Forest have opened the scoring in a league-high 17 of their 21 games this season, with Chris Wood getting nine of those goals.

It has been a strange season so far for Brighton, but they ended a winless run of eight Premier League games by beating Ipswich on Thursday (D6, L2).

They have lost just four league matches this season, but their 10 draws is a league high.

Fabian Hurzeler's side are looking for back-to-back top-flight away victories for the first time since winning their opening two matches on the road last season.

Remarkably Manchester United are yet to record back-to-back wins in the Premier League this season. That is a real sign of their troubles.

The last time they did was the final two games of last season, with the second of those victories coming against Brighton.

Tightening up at the back and producing better first-half performances is going to be key to turning that statistic around.

Ruben Amorim's side have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their past 11 matches in all competitions and they have trailed at half-time in six top-flight fixtures this term, second only to Leicester.

On Everton's striker options...

Options wise, there isn't that many.

Armando Borja is injured and Beto has not performed to the levels that everyone wanted.

Against Wolves and Dominic Calvert-Lewin was an inch away from scoring two goals.

There's been times where he has affected it, but every time he misses half a chance you see him gain less confidence.

Everton have lost their past three Premier League games without scoring. If that happens today it would be their first run of four defeats without scoring since February to March 2022.

Their goals issue is deeper than that though. They have failed to score in nine of their past 11 top-flight matches and have scored just five league goals since the start of November, and two of those were own goals by Wolves' Craig Dawson.

The Toffees are only the fourth side to fail to score in 12 of their opening 20 Premier League games of a season.

Creating chances is one of the big issues. They have had just 66 shots on target in their 20 fixtures so far, the third lowest tally in the top flight.

Since their 4-0 win over Manchester City in November, Tottenham Hotspur have managed just one Premier League win in nine games, with manager Ange Postecoglou regularly bemoaning injuries to key defenders and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Ex-Spurs keeper Paul Robinson tells The Football News Show he thinks Tottenham have to be more pragmatic to provide more support to their inexperienced defence.

His former Tottenham team-mate Michael Brown also thinks their workrate has to increase when it comes to tracking back.

It isn't just Everton that are struggling. Tottenham have won just five of 17 matches in all competitions since beating Aston Villa 4-1 on 3 November. They have lost eight games and drawn four in that time.

It's been rough going in the Premier League, with their only victory in their past nine league games a 5-0 success against bottom side Southampton.

Eleven defeats after 21 top-flight matches is their joint most at this stage of a Premier League campaign. Only the current bottom three have lost more often this season.

Don't get too excited if they take the lead too. Only Fulham have lost more points from winning positions this season than Tottenham's 18.

Arsenal had "problems" defensively as they gave up a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa, says Match of the Day pundit Ashley Williams.

"A Liverpool blip was put to bed."

Manchester United make three changes to the team that beat Southampton on Thursday, with Diogo Dalot returning from suspension and striker Joshua Zirkzee and defender Harry Maguire both included. Lisandro Martinez, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho drop to the bench.

Antony and Tyrell Malacia are also both named as substitutes despite being linked to moves away from Old Trafford during the current transfer window.
