'There's a generation of England players that expect to win' - Carsley

England interim boss Lee Carsley: "I think it was important. We spoke yesterday about matching their energy and enthusiasm.

"We knew it was going to be a difficult game, we saw that at Wembley. I think it was important, like I spoke about, to attack and to try and be as creative as we could.

"The most pleasing thing about tonight was the amount of control we played with. The shape of the team was really good. We had a lot of possession, created a lot of chances."

That home loss to Greece last month didn't help his cause.

But last night was a very strong England performance, their best in a good while.

In fact, let's remind ourselves what Lee Carsley had to say at full-time...

I'm in shock at last night's England performance. Round pegs in round holes, a left footed left back playing at left back, wide players in wide roles and only one ageing, miles past their best, starter. Remind me again why Carsely didn't get a look in for the permanent role?

If you’re missing a 'keeper', why not opt for Geraint?

What Carsley did here in leaving out the England captain and record scorer Harry Kane, when he was ‘absolutely fine’, means it will now not be such a big call for the German to do the same thing in 2025.

Last night perhaps also demonstrated to Tuchel - as if he didn’t know it already - the potential way ahead when you have Bellingham, Foden and Palmer at your disposal.

In the absence of the latter two, Bellingham put in his best all-round performance for England for over a year in a team selection that had real balance.

Good performance from England last night, especially from the younger players. However it was not as if we were playing a top team. We gave them far too many chances and if it wasn’t for Pickford the score line could have been very different.

Every youngster who stepped up had a real understanding of each other. They were all ready for this moment.

Curtis Jones made his debut with an outstanding performance and a wonderful goal. Noni Madueke started and created an assist in seven minutes. Morgan Gibbs-White didn't get much time, but came in and got an assist as well.

If Thomas Tuchel is looking for someone to fill in a role in the future, he need to look no further than the England Under-21s, because they've been fantastic.

They are all performing, and they don't want to be just a part of the win. They want to be the person who makes the difference. It's a great attitude to have and it's flowing throughout the U21s.

It shows that what Lee Carsley has done with the U21s is working.

I could spend hours researching old footballers.

A quick internet search and it appears Jock Rutherford is the great-granddad of 2012 Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford.

He won 11 England caps in all, his last coming in 1908 on a Three Lions European Tour against a side of Czech players called Bohemia.

That was Bohemia's last ever official international.

    More stats for you...

At 20 years and 67 days, Lewis Hall became the youngest Newcastle United player to appear for England in a competitive international since Jock Rutherford in April 1904, against Scotland in a Home Nations match (19 years and 180 days).

Great performance, Bellingham back to his best and Jones was brilliant. Also a big shout out for Lewis Hall, looked comfortable and loved the way he always looked to play forward and only 20 years old. well done young man.

  13. 'We'll see Carsley in a different light'published at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent

As the sun rose over the Acropolis this morning, we’re now looking at Lee Carsley’s time as Interim Head Coach in a very different light.

His ambitious plans for Greece at Wembley last month may have backfired but here in Athens his plan came together beautifully.

What we don’t know is whether the incoming Thomas Tuchel is having any influence at all, but Carsley did say last month he intended to show the new coach, as much as possible, what he is going to have at his disposal.

Morgan Rogers was one of three debutants for England last night.

The others were Curtis Jones and Lewis Hall.

It's hardly been mentioned in the coverage but England's second goal came from a great pass in behind from Rogers to Bellingham. He didn't look phased on his debut at all.

It was a clean, tidy performance from England against Greece.

There was a little bit of unrest in the build-up to the game due to certain factors, but the squad appeared to be very focused.

There was good balance across the starting 11 and the substitutes who came on had an impact as well. Massive fair play to Lee Carsley and his coaching staff for the way it was all managed.

They've got the job done and it's an important win in the end.

Thanks Brandon, Noni Madueke was a standout for me too.

While you've been texting I've booted up the BBC Sport graphic machine and decided to give the Jones XI a go.

    We're missing a forward and a keeper.

If you're English and called Jones, specialise in those two positions please.

Cracking performance from England, need more of that fluid attacking football we missed out on during the Southgate period. Madueke had an incredible performance, along with Pickford, more of this on Sunday.
