Netherlands legend Johan Neeskens has died at the age of 73, the Dutch football federation has confirmed.

The former midfielder was part of the Ajax and Netherlands teams credited with creating "total football" in the 1970s.

"With Johan Neeskens, the Dutch and international football world loses a legend," the KNVB federation said in a statement.

Neeskens was capped 49 times for the Dutch and was part of the teams that finished runners up at the 1974 and 1978 World Cups.

At Ajax he helped them win the European Cup three times and their domestic league twice.

Neeskens also spent five seasons at Spanish giants Barcelona, winning the Copa del Rey and European Cup Winners' Cup with them.

"His name is forever linked to European successes with clubs like Ajax and Barcelona and two World Cup finals for the Dutch national team," the KNVB added.

"With his characteristic tackles, sublime insights and iconic penalties, [he] will forever remain one of the most prominent and beloved players to ever play for our country."

After retiring as a player in 1991, Neeskens coached several clubs and was also an assistant coach with the Dutch national team from 1995 to 2000.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor on their WSL game against Man Utd being rescheduled this weekend: "Yeah, of course. We were disappointed, as players and staff.

"I think everyone has to understand we were supposed to play. We were in a very good team dynamic and I think not having the opportunity to play this weekend changed everything in preparation for the game on Tuesday with Real Madrid.

"When you have the opportunity to play one game a week, with this decision being made to postpone the game, now we have been out of competition for 10 days which is completely different.

"If you look at the situation, the decision is not good. I think it is not good for all the English clubs who are in the Champions League competition."

"We’ve had very special nights at the Bridge in the Champions League.

"Everyone knows our winning mentality has been embedded for several years now.

"Now with Sonia [Bompastor] and Lucy [Bronze] coming in, it's having that experience as a player and a manager. It's something that can take you that extra mile.

"We’re very different now. We’re on a new journey and it's exciting."

"It’s the first time we are going to face Real Madrid [as a coaching staff]. I know they are one of the most competitive teams in the Spanish league and they love to possess the ball.

"It’s an exciting game. We are ready for that and I know we will have a good game. For the fans it will be a great, great game."

  6. Can Bompastor deliver European trophy?published at 15:29 British Summer Time 7 October

I’m at Cobham - Chelsea’s training ground - where they have been preparing for their first Women’s Champions League group game this season.

It’s a big one to kickstart their European campaign as Chelsea face Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge tomorrow night.

This is a competition manager Sonia Bompastor knows extremely well having won it as a player and a manager with former club Lyon.

She was brought to Chelsea to succeed Emma Hayes in the hope she could deliver a European trophy and that will no doubt dominate questions in today’s press conference.

Defending champions Barcelona remain the team to beat but Bompastor’s Lyon caused them plenty of problems. Can she do the same with Chelsea?

They must navigate a group which includes tomorrow’s opponents Real Madrid, as well as FC Twente and Celtic first.

  7. How did we get here?published at 15:24 British Summer Time 7 October

APTs are commercial deals involving clubs and companies to which they have close ties. Restrictions on fair market values (FMVs) were introduced in December 2021, shortly after a Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle.

The Premier League has the right to assess the value of such deals to ensure they have not been inflated, which could give clubs more to spend under current financial rules.

The rules were changed following a vote in February that was not unanimous. Twelve clubs voted to change the rules, with two abstaining and six voting against the changes.

Those rule changes involved amendments to the definition FMV, and shifting the burden of proof to a club to show a transaction is at fair market value.

The BBC reported in June that City were due to face the Premier League in a legal battle.

The Premier League and Manchester City both said they welcomed the tribunal findings announced on Monday, with each side focusing on the elements in their favour.

"It would be nice for someone to step up and be a consistent goalscorer at international level."

It was a desperate plea uttered by Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill last week as he named his latest squad for upcoming Nations League games.

Four strikers currently playing in League One will vie to lead the line away in Belarus on Saturday, 12 October and at home against Bulgaria three days later.

Between them, Callum Marshall, Dion Charles, Josh Magennis and Jamie Reid have scored 15 goals in 109 games for the national side and O'Neill admitted that "it is very difficult" to pick up victories without "consistent goalscorers in your forward line".

It seems that Ronan Hale is the latest striker determined to answer the call to be NI's go to man up front.

@iamtaofeek on 'X': Do you think Arsenal can go unbeaten in the Premier League this season?

Phil: No, I don’t. I just think that is a pretty much impossible task these days. Arsenal, of course, did it 20 years ago, but if Manchester City have not been able to do it with their dominance, who can? Liverpool lost one game (to Manchester City) in 2018/19 and lost out on the title to Pep Guardiola’s side by one point. So no, can’t see it.

  10. Man City Premier League APT legal casepublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 7 October

In favour of Manchester City, the tribunal ruled that shareholder loans should not be excluded from the scope of APT rules and that some amendments made in February by the Premier League should not be retained.

This is a developing story which will be updated here.

  11. Verdict announced in Man City's Premier League APT legal casepublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 7 October
    Breaking

The verdict has been announced in Manchester City's legal case against the Premier League over its associated party transaction (APT) rules.

City had some complaints upheld, with two aspects of the APT rules deemed unlawful by a tribunal.

But the Premier League says the tribunal rejected the majority of Manchester City's challenges and "endorsed the overall objectives, framework and decision-making of the APT system".

APTs are aimed at the value of sponsorship deals with companies linked to clubs' owners.

This case is not directly related to the Premier League disciplinary commission which will hear 115 charges against City for allegedly breaching its financial regulations, some of which date back to 2009.

  12. Wales boss Bellamy untroubled by lack of top-flight playing timepublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 7 October

Wales head coach Craig Bellamy is not concerned about a lack of game time amongst the Premier League players he has to choose from as he prepares for a Nations League double-header.

First up is a trip to Iceland on 11 October, followed by a home game against Montenegro three days later at Cardiff City Stadium.

Of the 25-man squad named by Bellamy last week, nine are on the books of Premier League clubs but only Tottenham Hotspur winger Brennan Johnson and Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams have enjoyed regular starts in the Premier League so far this season.

But Bellamy is relaxed with regards to the minutes on the pitch for his Premier League players, seeing a silver lining in a lack of fatigue, while he believes the Championship - where the majority of his squad ply their trade - is a strong competition.

Everton defenders Dwight McNeil and James Tarkowski talking during the match against Newcastle UnitedImage source, Getty Images

Barry, Bournemouth: Hi Phil. It can’t be Monday without an Everton question! Following a start where we played well offensively and scored goals, only to then capitulate, Dyche seems to have reverted back to the more defensive organisation of last year, even playing five at the back at home to Newcastle. With the squad we have, do you think this is the best we can hope for this season - dogged defensive draws and the occasional odd-goal win?

Phil: True enough about the Everton questions, Barry.

First things first. Did he really play five at the back on Saturday? It was an orthodox back four of Garner, Tarkowski, Keane and Young as far as I could see. I think Dyche had to do something to shore up the defence but I must admit it does not make for viewing that is pleasing on the eye. I do think, however, that reality and the players available dictates that is the style Everton will adopt under Dyche this season.

It’s going to be another attritional campaign of staying out of trouble, in my opinion, not one of free-flowing expansive football, although Iliman Ndiaye certainly gives Everton more of an “X Factor”. Sorry to sound negative, but Everton’s over-riding task this season is to stay in the Premier League ahead of the opening of the new stadium at the start of the next campaign, re-set and make a fresh start under the ownership of American billionaire Dan Friedkin.

  14. Who's in?published at 14:46 British Summer Time 7 October

England's Dominic SolankeImage source, Getty Images

England interim boss Lee Carsley named his England squad last week and one of the headline inclusions was that of Tottenham's Dominic Solanke.

It's the striker's first call-up since he earned his only cap, back in 2017 after coming on off the bench against Brazil.

Kyle Walker and Jude Bellingham are also back in whilst while Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, Tottenham playmaker James Maddison and Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze also miss out.

With Bellingham back in, it might give fans an opportunity to see how Lee Carsley plans to get the best out of England's attacking talent.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor will miss Scotland's Nations League matches against Croatia and Portugal.

The left-back, 26, was absent for Sunday's win at Ross County after suffering a calf injury in the midweek Champions League defeat by Borussia Dortmund.

Taylor, capped 14 times, also withdrew from the squad for the opening defeats to Poland and Portugal in this campaign.

Head coach Steve Clarke was already without 10 players through injury and there are doubts over Angus Gunn.

  17. Who might be missing this international break?published at 14:30 British Summer Time 7 October

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz won't join up with the German national team. He will stay behind to have injuries assessed.

The German national team's X account said that Havertz won't be joining up because of 'knee problems'.

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho has withdrawn from the Argentina squad, citing knee problems in an Instagram story post.

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa is also a doubt after he left the pitch after 12 minutes against Manchester United, along with Morgan Gibbs-White was brought off after 76 minutes against Chelsea.

  18. Konsa and Gibbs-White injury doubtspublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 7 October

Ezri Konsa and Morgan Gibbs-WhiteImage source, Getty Images

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa and Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White are doubts for England duty after sustaining injuries on Sunday.

Konsa, 26, suffered a hamstring injury and left the field just 12 minutes into Villa's goalless draw against Manchester United.

Gibbs-White, 24, was substituted after 76 minutes of Forest's 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

Both players have been named in Lee Carsley's 25-man squad for England's Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland next week.

Carsley handed Konsa a starting role when the Three Lions beat Finland 2-0 at Wembley on 10 September.

"I think it is a hamstring but I don't know if big or small," Villa boss Emery said of Konsa's injury.

However, after Emery had spoken at his post-match press conference a Villa official said even if the injury was a small one, it would still rule Konsa out for two weeks and therefore make no sense for England to call him up.

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo also suggested the prognosis on Gibbs-White is unclear until they further investigate on Monday.

  19. Emery 'hopes' Konsa can restpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 7 October

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd

Unai Emery also provided an update on the fitness of England defender Ezri Konsa who left the pitch after just 12 minutes in Villa's 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

He suffered a hamstring injury and is due to be with the England squad for Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland.

Emery said: "I don't know [on Konsa's injury], hopefully it's not a lot. Hopefully he can rest in the international break.

"We can have some days off [in the international break] we can recover our energy and try to push in the next month.

"We are being demanding and competing very well. We are happy in the Champions League, and happy of course in the Carabao Cup. We're going to play seven matches in the next month. We have to stay competitive like we are now and being demanding."
