Speaking this morning on 5 Live Breakfast, Schmeichel discussed Ten Hag's decision to start Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans:

"I've said this for a long, long time, they are the best two centre-halves we have got."

Talking about Jonny Evan's man of the match performance, Schmeichel added:

"The only reason he's not playing every game is that he picks up injuries.

    "He was absolutely outstanding yesterday."

  2. Morning recap and what's to comepublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 7 October 2024

We have already covered a lot of ground this morning so let's go over the main stories:

    • Jhon Duran has signed a new deal with Aston Villa
    • Ten Hag says Man Utd are all on the same page
    • Postecoglou disappointed with "worst" defeat since he joined club

We have also had a Q&A with the BBC's chief football writer Phil McNulty who has touched upon Gary O'Neil needing more time at Wolves and whether Marcus Rashford should have had a red card against Aston Villa.

Do keep your questions coming in for Phil as he will keep answering them this afternoon. We will also look at more reaction from the weekend, including Liverpool's impressive start to the season and the Women's Champions League fixtures coming up this week.

But first some more reaction to Aston Villa's 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

  3. 'It feels very unsatisfactory'published at 11:58 British Summer Time 7 October 2024

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at Villa Park

We don’t know what Sir Jim Ratcliffe thought of Manchester United's draw at Aston Villa.

There was no outward sign of emotion - good or bad - from the United co-owner. He just spun round and headed for the sanctuary of the directors area at Villa Park.

But Ratcliffe will have an opinion. Just as he will over United currently being 14th in the Premier League.

If Ten Hag remains in post, he moves onto matches against Brentford, West Ham, Chelsea and Leicester. Then he will be assessed again.

That is where United are right now, moving from game to game and deciding whether it is good enough.

It feels very unsatisfactory and after the series of results United have had, they are only one defeat from a major crisis.

Draws at Porto and Aston Villa on their own are decent but there is no real confidence United have the players to turn minor improvement into something more meaningful.

Speaking on 5 Live Breakfast after Danny Welbeck's goal sealed Brighton's comeback over Tottenham, former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel suggested it shows weakness in Manchester United's recruitment:

"Unbelievable. Again, it's really really sad. It's a former Man United player, a former Arsenal player, how is he not at Manchester United?

"I watched Scott McTominay the other day, 25 seconds into his first game he scored a goal. Why's he at Napoli? When you look at Man United, how it's going [there], 14th in the table, these are quality players. They should have been at Man United."

Simon, Manchester: Hi Phil, given the lack of identity and more importantly, the inability to score goals, do you think Ten Hag will survive the international break or have we seen him manage Man Utd for the last time?

Phil: This is the big question, Simon. I honestly think if he had lost one of the games at Porto in the Europa League on Thursday or at Aston Villa on Sunday then he would have been in huge trouble – two draws may just save him, although that remains to be seen. If he survives, I do feel it is only putting off the inevitable though unless there is a swift and dramatic improvement after the international break.

On your point of lack of identity, I totally agree and this is one of the big problems. We have seen two managers in Arne Slot at Liverpool and Enzo Maresca at Chelsea barely have their feet under the table and yet you can see their identity. Slot has taken the best of what Jurgen Klopp left him and added a more measured, controlled style while Maresca’s passing style is self-evident. What is Ten Hag’s preferred style? What is his obvious strategy? I genuinely don’t know and this is his third season at Old Trafford.

Alan, West Sussex: Phil, simple question. Why do Spurs keep collapsing, which they have at various times since Postecoglou took over?

Phil: Hello, Alan. I can only put it down to the strategy Ange Postecoglou employs, which is great to watch but carries high risk, especially with that defensive high line. We’ve seen both sides of it in the last week, with a brilliant 3-0 win destroying Manchester United then, as we saw at Brighton yesterday, a collapse. I have said before that Postecoglou perhaps needs to employ a more pragmatic approach but he is sticking by his principles, banking on them bringing more highs than lows, more thrilling wins than dramatic losses. It’s never dull, that’s for sure.

You speak to people instrumental in Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran's career and some common themes come up - a raw, supremely talented footballer, a family man - and somebody who needs to be guided.

The 20-year-old Colombia striker enjoyed the best moment of his career to date with a stunning 25-yard Champions League winner against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, underlining his growing super sub status for Aston Villa.

It was his sixth goal, and fifth winner, in fewer than 300 minutes of football this season.

It has been a pretty rapid rise for one of the youngest goalscorers in Colombian professional football history - and the youngest ever foreign signing in Major League Soccer.

"We told him, today he is here in El Dorado fields, tomorrow he could be stepping into the best stadiums in the world and facing the best players in the world," youth coach Wilberth Perea Mena, who first met Duran as a 14-year-old at his first club Envigado, told BBC Sport.

"He laughed, but I think that dream has come true."

Former West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker speaking to Football Daily before Duran's new contract was announced: "In my opinion, for Jhon Duran he's in a perfect place right now, playing Champions League football for one of the top four teams in England.

"He's not happy coming on as a substitute because he probably wants to start, Unai Emery probably doesn't feel he has the impact to start the game, which is fine but I would say play your role for the entire season, see how the season goes and then you might have to speak to Unai Emery to say 'look I want first team football'. Next year is when he should be working to start."

  10. Duran deal detailspublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 7 October 2024

Aston Villa have announced a new contract for Jhon Duran after a thoroughly impressive start to the season but they have not announced the length of the extension.

Duran originally joined Villa from Chicago Fire in 2023 in an £18m deal. He was Unai Emery's second signing as Villa manager, after the boss already brought in Alex Moreno.

  11. 'When Duran has the ball he is scoring quickly' - Emerypublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 7 October 2024

Before Jhon Duran's contract extension was announced manager Unai Emery had been full of praise for his player.

Emery said after Duran scored against Bayern Munich: “This is the talent that some players have and when Jhon Duran has the ball he is scoring quickly."

He has also been responsible for winning goals on three occasions in the Premier League.

Duran, 20, also has the best minutes per goal since the start of last season with 71.7. Manchester City's Erling Haaland is second with 86.1.

Karl: Hi Phil. I wanted to ask, after seven games and with 10 points already on the board, do you think that Nottingham Forest is now a force to be wary of?

Phil: Hello, Karl. I certainly think Forest look vastly improved on last season and to win away at Liverpool, then get a very creditable draw at Chelsea illustrates that. Nuno Espirito Santo has had time to work with the team after arriving last season and the signs are there that Forest are playing in a way he liked to employ at Wolves. Namely; solid in defence, pace on the flanks and dangerous on the counter attack. It has been a really good start.

Ange Postecoglou: 'the most disappointing loss I've had'

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to Sky Sports after the game: "Disappointing, frustrated and absolutely gutted with that. The worst defeat since I've been here. Unacceptable second half. Nowhere near where we should be. We got carried away with how we were going.

"We kind of accepted our fate and it is hard to understand as we've not done that while I've been here. We paid the price.

"The problem is we are travelling along too smoothly, football and life will trip you up if you get too far ahead of yourself."

On his message to the players: "There is no message. It is a terrible loss for us - as bad as it gets. [There is] only one way to fix it and that's my responsibility.

"We lost all our duels and if you're not competitive it is not going to work - we were not competitive.

"They all go on international duty - the majority of them. They will process it individually and I will process it when everyone gets back."

  17. Spurs somehow threw away control of the matchpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 7 October 2024

    Brighton 3-2 Tottenham

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport

At half-time, all the headlines looked like they would be about Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson continuing his superb run of form.

Having scored five goals in his first 38 games for Spurs, the 23-year-old Wales international has now scored in each of his past six games in all competitions.

He opened the scoring at the Amex when he timed his run perfectly to connect with Dominic Solanke's through ball and calmly slotted past home goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

After James Maddison added a second, Johnson had a chance to get a third for Tottenham just before the break, but shot over after racing through following Dejan Kulusevski's pass.

But that two-goal lead was as good as the afternoon got for Tottenham, as they somehow threw away control of the match as Brighton scored three times in an 18-minute spell in the second half.

Boss Ange Postecoglou called the collapse "probably the worst defeat since I've been here", although the impressive form of Johnson did at least provide one positive for Spurs.

James: Hi Phil. As a Spurs fan, I can't help but feel like we're slowly falling into a similar pattern of behaviour that has been present over the last few years. I like Ange but his stubbornness seems to be a blessing one week and a curse the next. Do you have any advice on how we can gain a bit of consistency? Looking forward to hearing a bit of positivity on this dreary Monday morning.

Phil: Hi James, what a different Monday morning feeling to seven days ago for Spurs fans. All was light after a fantastic performance and win at Manchester United, then you have the collapse from 2-0 up at Brighton. If you look for positivity, I think Spurs are an incredibly good team to watch but with Ange Postecoglou’s all-out attacking approach, lows may well come with highs.

I’ve said before I feel he needs to be more pragmatic to sustain a top four challenge and win the big prizes and you have seen both sides to that in the last seven days. I honestly do not think he will change and will succeed or fail on those principles. And while we talk about the manager, the Spurs players should really have managed that situation better yesterday. Postecoglou took responsibility but he was right, the second half was “unacceptable.”

Richard, Glos: After the international break, Wolves have Man City at home and Brighton away. The imbalanced starting fixtures list is then addressed with 8 consecutive games against bottom half teams. Should Gary O’Neil be given time to try to turn the corner? If so, how long?

Phil: Morning, Gary. There is no getting away from what a poor start this has been for Wolves, with O’Neil himself expressing his disappointment at how far away his side were from what he expects when losing 5-3 at Brentford – and don’t forget they also shipped six at home to Chelsea. All the indications from Molineux at the moment are that they are solidly behind O’Neil. He signed a new four-year deal in August and the club have publicly declared their support for him again recently. To give context, it’s a tough job for O’Neil. Don’t forget he lost two very important players in defender Max Kilman and winger Pedro Neto, so they are still trying to adjust to that. O’Neil has done a good job at Wolves and deserves time – but he will know as well as anyone that results need to improve. The next fixtures, as point out, are tough but then he will hope to get Wolves’ season into its stride.
