Nottingham Forest have taken a huge leap forward under Nuno Espirito Santo this season.

That 90 minutes could be painted as an example of everything the Premier League should be - as Forest competed manfully, physically and with incredible tactical nuance at Stamford Bridge.

They were previously seen as a low block, defensive team under Steve Cooper - and in the first season under the Portuguese - but they are now able to retain possession and press higher up the pitch, while still sitting off teams when needed.

There has been an evolution that has taken them to one of the best defensive records in the league - conceding fewer than Manchester City, with their rearguard action crucial to this result.

The one-on-one defending of Ola Aina was exceptional, the two centre-backs Milenkovic and Murilo are two of the most physically imposing in the league and Sels has solved the goalkeeping problems since promotion.

Between them, they managed to handle Ward-Prowse's red card in a masterclass of defending, wasting time and counter-attacking football that led to Williams and Jota Silva going close.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, speaking to BBC MOTD2: "I think we deserved to win.

"They are a very good team and we knew they would defend well. It was a tough and tricky game, very different to Brighton. We were patient on the ball and created chances.

"Overall the performance was good and I think we deserved to win.

"Their keeper was the best of the game. We created chances and arrived at goal in the way we want to."

On whether he has concerns about home form not matching results on the road: "I don't think so. If you analyse the games, I think Crystal Palace was like today - we created and deserved to win. I don't think there is any reason."

Chris Wood and Noni Madueke scored as Chelsea and Nottingham Forest played out a tactical and feisty draw at Stamford Bridge.

Forest went ahead when 32-year-old striker Wood slid in a finish past Robert Sanchez after a good set-piece routine involving James Ward-Prowse and Nikola Milenkovic in the 49th minute.

But Chelsea responded quickly as Madueke equalised eight minutes later after cutting in on his left foot and shooting, his fourth such effort having had the beating of left-back Alex Moreno.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has favour within Manchester United's top brass and is now available after resigning following Euro 2024, but the notion hardly captured the imagination of United fans.

Thomas Tuchel had talks in the summer after leaving Bayern Munich but was not convinced enough to take the job. The German has high-class credentials, such as winning the Champions League with Chelsea, but also has a reputation for being high-maintenance.

Former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter was coy about summer links with United but has made it clear he is now ready to return to management.

Ruud van Nistelrooy came back to Old Trafford to join Ten Hag's team after the manager was finally shown faith in the summer. Could he hold the fort while a wider search goes on?

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has outstanding pedigree, taking them to the Champions League final against Manchester City in 2023 and continues to do outstanding work at the San Siro.

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is highly regarded from his time on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s staff at United but his career, which has been outstanding at Portman Road in taking the Tractor Boys into the Premier League, is still a work in progress.

Erik ten Haghas all the answers but doesn't have the solution when the game is going on. He states the obvious at times and when it doesn't suit him he tries to re-write history of what we actually just witnessed.

And it's not about picking on Erik ten Hag, for me, I feel that sometimes he puts himself in these predicaments and I don't think he realises what a big deal it is to be Manchester United's manager.

People are going to criticise you because there has been high standards held at this club because it's one of the most historic clubs in world football.

This is the 10th time that Tottenham have lost a Premier League game in which they led by 2 or more goals - Spurs are the first club to hit double figures for this and have done so at least three more times than any other side.

The Premier League season is now put on hold for the latest round of Uefa Nations League matches and internationals.

Manchester United's next match is Brentford at home in the Premier League on Saturday, 19 October.

This break in the season offers a chance to United - and indeed Erik ten Hag - to take time and take stock, giving them space to examine their options.

Before Sunday's draw at Aston Villa, Sir Jim Ratcliffe told the BBC's sports editor, Dan Roan, that Ten Hag's future was "not my call", saying the hierarchy he has assembled must "take stock and make some sensible decisions".

He added: "It's the management team that's running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different aspects."

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou called his side's collapse against Brighton in the Premier League "probably the worst defeat since I've been here".

Spurs were 2-0 up after 37 minutes and heading for their sixth successive win in all competitions after goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison, but conceded three times in the second half as Brighton took the three points.

"It was disappointing and I’m absolutely gutted with that," said Postecoglou.

"It's an unacceptable second half - we were nowhere near where we should be. Maybe we got carried away with how we were going.

"We kind of accepted our fate and it's hard to understand as we've not done that while I've been here. We usually fight for everything, and when you don’t you pay a price."

Brighton produced a superb fightback to come from two goals down and beat Tottenham in a Premier League thriller on the south coast.

Spurs looked to be heading to a sixth successive victory in all competitions as they deservedly led 2-0 after 37 minutes.

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring with his sixth goal in six games when he timed his run perfectly to run on to Dominic Solanke’s through ball before slotting past Bart Verbruggen.

The home goalkeeper should have done better with a curled shot from James Maddison as he got two hands to the low strike, but could not keep the ball out as Spurs doubled their lead.

But Brighton were a side transformed after the break.

They pulled one back early in the second half, when Destiny Udogie was unable to clear the ball from Kaoru Mitoma's cross and Yankuba Minteh capitalised to grab his first goal for the Seagulls following his £30m move from Newcastle.

The impressive Mitoma was again involved as the hosts equalised in the 58th minute, passing to Georginio Rutter, who twisted to create space away from Micky van de Ven and then shoot low past Guglielmo Vicario.

Rutter then did excellently to not give up, slide in near the byeline to get a cross in, which Danny Welbeck converted with a downward header to score what proved to be the winner.

Manchester United have scored a meagre five goals in their opening seven Premier League games. Only struggling Southampton have fewer, having scored four, while Crystal Palace also have five.

You have to go back to 1972-73 for a worse total, when United only had four goals from their first seven league games.

This lack of a goal threat was in evidence in Sunday's goalless draw at Villa Park. The combined expected goals total between Villa and United was just 1.05, the lowest in the Premier League this season.

Rasmus Hojlund returned to action, but for all his effort was ineffective and replaced by Joshua Zirkzee after an hour.

Zirkzee has only one goal in 10 games, while Antony has 12 in 86 and Hojlund a more respectable 17 in 48 matches - but still hardly prolific.

The overall goal statistics under Ten Hag are also damning. He has the worst goals-per-game ratio of any permanent Manchester United manager from Sir Alex Ferguson onwards, with a figure of 1.45 goals per game.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gave fans some important updates post-match, speaking to Sky Sports about Maguire's injury, he said: "He didn't feel well after half-time so I had to take him off.

"We know in this moment we have a lack of goals, in that perspective it's not a good start, we have to step up. That's an area we have to improve. But we have four clean sheets. That's good because we have to defend proper."

On if he has spoken to the club's hierarchy: "We always speak, every week we speak. We are all on board together, on one page, we know what we are working through it's a long-term process.

"We have come through two very tough away games. This is a team, we showed the belief and faith we have."

Erik ten Hag's decision to revert back to the veteran duo of 36-year-old Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire to stem the tide against Aston Villa spoke volumes about the problems he has had making United any sort of cohesive unit.

The Dutchman ditched Matthijs de Ligt, his recent £45m signing from Bayern Munich, and Lisandro Martinez in a decision which was hardly a vote of confidence in a pair designed to be the future of his defence.

A clean sheet at Villa was almost cause for celebration given United have remained porous whatever combination he has tried - and Evans and Maguire have not played together since last November.

Since Ten Hag was appointed in summer 2022, no Premier League side have conceded three or more goals in a match in all competitions more times than United's total of 24. And in 62 games since the start of last season, United have conceded twice on 31 occasions, the most of any Premier League side.

Manchester United's under-siege manager Erik ten Hag will clutch gratefully at any small mercy as he battles to present a convincing case that he should have a long-term future at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag faced games at Porto in the Europa League and away to Aston Villa in the past week, which were flagged as potential defining moments as United's restructured managerial hierarchy plotted their next moves.

United may not have won either of those games - the concession of a two-goal advantage to draw 3-3 in Porto typical of the disorganised chaos that has characterised much of Ten Hag's tenure - but a battling goalless draw at Aston Villa at least means he did not lose any.

The club's co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance at Villa Park alongside sidekick Sir Dave Brailsford and other members of United's new executive group such as Dan Ashworth, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox. Sir Alex Ferguson was there too, for good measure.

So has Ten Hag done enough to maintain the continued faith of Ratcliffe and his cohorts - and what will be central to their deliberations this week?

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag spoke very firmly about his future after yesterday's game at Villa Park, telling me he would have been told if there were any issues.

But is that right?

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe could have told the BBC's Sports Editor Dan Roan that when they spoke on Friday in Barcelona but he didn't.

Ratcliffe was at Aston Villa along with the rest of United's senior executives.

He will be joined by representatives of the Glazer family at a meeting in London on Tuesday.

That meeting is pre-planned but it is not known if Ten Hag's future will be discussed, or if there will be clarification around the Dutchman before or after.

According to this report, the owners are "reluctant" to sack Ten Hag, who would be due "£7m in compensation".
