Rangers secured a third consecutive Scottish Premiership win, with Vaclav Cerny's exquisite double effectively sealing the points before Ianis Hagi's late red card.

The Czech scored either side of the interval to ensure the Ibrox side end the weekend still five points back from Celtic and Aberdeen.

Hagi, introduced at half-time to make his first appearance since last August following a contractual issue, assisted the second goal.

However, the Romanian's night ended badly, his high challenge on Adama Sidibeh's shin being upgraded from a yellow card after a VAR check.

Although stretched at times by St Johnstone's attacking intent in transitions and robust defending, Cerny's brilliant intervention broke the deadlock for Rangers.

Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool): He was excellent. He is growing into that holding midfielder that we all thought Liverpool needed. Liverpool thought they needed it when they tried to sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer, but Gravenberch looks like a powerhouse and is getting better and better with each game.

Mateo Kovacic (Manchester City): He got two goals in the win against Fulham and people will focus on that but he also broke the play up and kept the ball moving really well. He had a bit of the dark arts in there too, helping Manchester City to see out the game.

Mikkel Damsgaard (Brentford): He picked up two assists in a topsy-turvy win over Wolves. I had a friend who was at the match and I asked him who the best player was - he said Damsgaard and I trust his opinion.

Everton grabbed their first point of the Women's Super League season as they fought hard to hold Arsenal to a goalless draw at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal dominated possession and pushed forward throughout, but were unable to find a way through a resilient Everton defence.

Emily Fox hit the woodwork early on for the Gunners, while Toffees goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan kept out multiple efforts from Mariona Caldentey and Frida Maanum.

The result leaves Arsenal sixth in the WSL table after three games, two points off leaders Manchester City, while Everton are next to bottom.

    Trent Alexander-ArnoldImage source, Getty Images

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool): Another clean sheet for Liverpool. I don't think that is being spoken about enough. Some of the passes he played in the win at Crystal Palace with the outside of his foot were easy on the eye, like the one he played to Mohamed Salah to set him away. He just looks more comfortable and more confident.

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool): Monster. Powerhouse. He never looks worried or concerned. The complaints about a penalty were daft, it was really good defending. The player was never getting there and Van Dijk just made sure. It was another captain-like performance from the big centre-half, who Liverpool need to tie down to a new contract as soon as possible.

Michael Keane (Everton): He gets a lot of stick and is under a lot of pressure at Everton. The fans aren't having him one bit. James Tarkowski, who normally gets a lot of credit, was poor and Keane was solid as ever cleaning up for him.

Diogo Dalot (Manchester United): He hasn't been great this season but has been very consistent for Manchester United over the last couple of years. Whether he's at left-back or right-back, he plays really well. He helped his team to get a good point at high-flying Aston Villa and a result Manchester United really needed.

  5. Blanchard double gives Palace first WSL win in Leicesterpublished at 09:56 British Summer Time

Annabel Blanchard scored twice to deliver Crystal Palace's first ever win in the Women's Super League as they defeated Leicester 2-0 at King Power Stadium.

The WSL newcomers suffered heavy defeats by Tottenham and Chelsea in their opening two games, but Blanchard's clinical 55th-minute strike marked a turnaround in the Eagles' misfortunes.

Blanchard sprinted on to a clever flick from Katie Stengel before burying the ball into the bottom left corner for Palace's first WSL goal.

The English forward then converted from the spot after Ruby Mace recklessly brought down Lexi Potter in the area.

The win lifts Palace off the bottom of the table and into eighth, above Leicester in 10th.

  6. Who has made Troy's Premier League team of the week?published at 09:54 British Summer Time

After every round of Premier League matches this season, BBC football pundit Troy Deeney will give you his team and manager of the week.

Here are this week's choices. Do you agree? Give us your thoughts using the thumbs up and thumbs down icons.

Goalkeeper - Jordan Pickford (Everton): I've given Jordan a lot of stick over the course of this season because I think he's played awful at times, but now I'm going to give him his flowers. I thought he played really well against Newcastle, not only with his penalty save, but I thought he was more measured and more controlled. He got hold of his team, claimed a clean sheet and earned them a well-deserved point.

Ashleigh Neville was adjudged to have fouled Sophie Roman Haug in the box and Hobinger stepped up to guide the ball past the outstretched arm of Tottenham goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.

Clare Hunt had scored in the 83rd minute, from Neville's cross, as Tottenham looked to have sealed a point.

Manchester City picked up a comfortable Women's Super League victory against West Ham as Jill Roord started her first match since recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Netherlands midfielder Roord, 27, the club's record signing, came off the bench in last week's 1-0 victory over Brighton but played 45 minutes from the start at Joie Stadium this time around.

She contributed to a routine win for City despite manager Gareth Taylor leaving several key players out of the starting XI.

With a European tie against Barcelona to come on Wednesday, Taylor handed a first start in 256 days for Roord, who looked sharp on her full return.

She linked up well with England international Lauren Hemp, who capped off another impressive display with a goal in the first half.

The official German national team X account (formerly Twitter), said that Havertz won't be joining up because of 'knee problems'.

It is correct that Havertz will be staying back with Arsenal as he is checked over but the problems aren't thought to be serious as he completed the full match against Southampton as the Gunners won 3-1 on Saturday.

  12. Why will Chelsea receive a fine?published at 09:36 British Summer Time

    Chelsea 1-1 Nottingham Forest

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Enzo Maresca has played down ill-discipline concerns after Chelsea received six or more yellow cards for the second time this season and will receive a fine of £50,000 after a feisty match with Nottingham Forest.

The Italian manager oversaw a 1-1 draw with Forest as six of his players, including Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella, were booked with the defensive duo now suspended for the match following the international break away at Liverpool.

Chris Wood opened the scoring and Noni Madueke equalised in a hectic second half where James Ward-Prowse was sent off for deliberate handball to cut out a counterattack from Nicolas Jackson.

Then followed a mass altercation involving the majority of both of the two squads, with videos showing Jackson apparently slapping Forest defender Morato.

When asked if ill-discipline is a concern, Maresca said: "It’s something we need to improve but overall, I like the team the way they are fighting. I like the way they are becoming a team in these kinds of things. I don’t see any problems about that.

"For sure, there are things that we can control and do better, for sure no doubt, and probably this is one of the things. But if you ask me about the team spirit, the way they are fighting together, the way they are doing things together, I’m very happy."

He further explained that there are no concerns about losing Cucurella and Fofana for Liverpool in two weeks, adding: "The good news is they are all ready."

Answering whether getting a £50,000 fine, which is double the initial £25,000 fine received after the away match at Bournemouth, is an issue, explaining "I am not going to pay it!"

Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo was himself booked and echoed his counterpart's sentiments: "I was there also. I went there to try to calm it down. It is very hard for the platters to control their emotions. Very hard for us as managers to do that. So many responsibilities. We need the referees to understand."

No team received more bookings than Chelsea in the Premier League last season.

Nottingham Forest have taken a huge leap forward under Nuno Espirito Santo this season.

That 90 minutes could be painted as an example of everything the Premier League should be - as Forest competed manfully, physically and with incredible tactical nuance at Stamford Bridge.

They were previously seen as a low block, defensive team under Steve Cooper - and in the first season under the Portuguese - but they are now able to retain possession and press higher up the pitch, while still sitting off teams when needed.

There has been an evolution that has taken them to one of the best defensive records in the league - conceding fewer than Manchester City, with their rearguard action crucial to this result.

The one-on-one defending of Ola Aina was exceptional, the two centre-backs Milenkovic and Murilo are two of the most physically imposing in the league and Sels has solved the goalkeeping problems since promotion.

Between them, they managed to handle Ward-Prowse's red card in a masterclass of defending, wasting time and counter-attacking football that led to Williams and Jota Silva going close.

Forest red card made game more difficult - Maresca

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, speaking to BBC MOTD2: "I think we deserved to win.

"They are a very good team and we knew they would defend well. It was a tough and tricky game, very different to Brighton. We were patient on the ball and created chances.

"Overall the performance was good and I think we deserved to win.

"Their keeper was the best of the game. We created chances and arrived at goal in the way we want to."

On whether he has concerns about home form not matching results on the road: "I don't think so. If you analyse the games, I think Crystal Palace was like today - we created and deserved to win. I don't think there is any reason."

Chris Wood and Noni Madueke scored as Chelsea and Nottingham Forest played out a tactical and feisty draw at Stamford Bridge.

Forest went ahead when 32-year-old striker Wood slid in a finish past Robert Sanchez after a good set-piece routine involving James Ward-Prowse and Nikola Milenkovic in the 49th minute.

But Chelsea responded quickly as Madueke equalised eight minutes later after cutting in on his left foot and shooting, his fourth such effort having had the beating of left-back Alex Moreno.

  18. Who else is available for Man Utd if Ten Hag departs?published at 09:14 British Summer Time

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has favour within Manchester United's top brass and is now available after resigning following Euro 2024, but the notion hardly captured the imagination of United fans.

Thomas Tuchel had talks in the summer after leaving Bayern Munich but was not convinced enough to take the job. The German has high-class credentials, such as winning the Champions League with Chelsea, but also has a reputation for being high-maintenance.

Former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter was coy about summer links with United but has made it clear he is now ready to return to management.

Ruud van Nistelrooy came back to Old Trafford to join Ten Hag's team after the manager was finally shown faith in the summer. Could he hold the fort while a wider search goes on?

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has outstanding pedigree, taking them to the Champions League final against Manchester City in 2023 and continues to do outstanding work at the San Siro.

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is highly regarded from his time on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s staff at United but his career, which has been outstanding at Portman Road in taking the Tractor Boys into the Premier League, is still a work in progress.

And it's not about picking on Erik ten Hag, for me, I feel that sometimes he puts himself in these predicaments and I don't think he realises what a big deal it is to be Manchester United's manager.

People are going to criticise you because there has been high standards held at this club because it's one of the most historic clubs in world football.
