Gary: Why was Marcus Rashford not sent off?

Phil: Morning, Gary. Not a clue. He should have been. I thought referee Rob Jones was wrong not to show him another yellow card for his second foul in a matter of minutes when he tripped Leon Bailey. I am not sure of the thought process. Did he feel maybe the two fouls together did not merit a sending off? That should not matter. I commented at the time that I felt Rashford would have been shown a yellow card for the second offence had he not already been shown one for his first challenge on Matt Cash. To me, the foul on Bailey was a very obvious yellow card.

In my opinion Rashford was very lucky.

What a season Aberdeen are having in the Scottish Premiership.

Marco Silva (Fulham): This is a weird one to say because he was a losing manager, but I was mightily impressed with how Silva was tactically. Fulham ran Manchester City all the way. If all the chances hadn't fallen to Adama Traore then Fulham probably would have won - they were excellent and put Manchester City under pressure.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah before the Premier League match between Manchester United and LiverpoolImage source, Getty Images

Ollie: What’s the latest on Liverpool contract situation for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk and what are your thoughts on what you think the outcome will be?

Phil: Hi Ollie. It all seems very quiet doesn’t it? In fact Salah and Van Dijk have said that themselves, with Salah even suggesting after the win at Manchester United that this was going to be his last season at Anfield. You have to imagine Liverpool are quietly working on this behind the scenes. It would be folly if they were not. I do not think Liverpool can afford to lose any of them, all world-class players, but until we have news and negotiations move on then there will always be the concern they could walk away at the end of the season. I believe Liverpool must make it a top priority to keep all three. Yes, Salah is 32 and Van Dijk 33. but they both look very fit and are playing so well. Where would Liverpool find an upgrade on those two?

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal): He got two assists and a goal - that's becoming a very normal weekend for Saka. Another excellent performance in a game that was a potential banana skin against Southampton. He just looked a class above. Not only is it good for Arsenal but it's also good news for England.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham): A huge game not only for West Ham but also for Bowen. The manager was under pressure and he had to deliver as captain - that's exactly what he did with an assist and a goal. He was a threat all game against an Ipswich team that have been very good all season and he made them look bang average.

Kai Havertz (Arsenal): There's a lot of pressure on his shoulders because people wonder whether he will score enough goals. He has just equalled Robin van Persie's record for seven in seven games at Emirates Stadium - that's no mean feat. He is growing in confidence, looks comfortable and it looks like Arsenal have a top player on their hands.

Chris Kiernan, Bebington: Aston Villa fans constantly sing that goalkeeper Emi Martinez is “the world’s number one”. Do you reckon he is?

Phil: Here’s a loaded question. Simple answer – no I don’t. I think Martinez is an outstanding goalkeeper and who can argue with Villa fans believing he is the best given his form for them and the fact he was vital to Argentina winning the World Cup in Qatar in 2022?

Going back even further, I still remember his brilliant performance when Arsenal beat Chelsea to win the FA Cup in 2020. I was actually surprised they sold him to Villa. In my opinion, Liverpool’s Alisson Becker is “the world’s number one”. So vital to Liverpool’s success, a game-changer since his arrival in 2018. He is remarkably consistent, relatively understated – although he would wish to avoid the injuries that have troubled him in the last couple of seasons. I think Martinez is a superb keeper, but I would place Alisson Becker ahead of him. Just.

Celtic "showed a great resilience and mentality" to come from behind against Ross County and maintain their 100% start to the Scottish Premiership season.

Manager Brendan Rodgers had asked for his players to “bounce back even higher” from their midweek Champions League dismantling by Borussia Dortmund.

But Celtic barely got off the ground for the first 70 minutes, and were given a lesson by County on how to set up against a superior side.

"We looked like we wanted an easy game in the first half and that's not what this team's about," Rodgers told BBC Scotland.

"We deserved to win the game but we want to win it in the best way, and first half we didn't quite do that."

Instead, County's resoluteness, discipline and ability to capitalise on their visitors' slackness, was gilded by Ronan Hale's first-half penalty.

Michee Efete’s cross hit the arm of Liam Scales and, after being summoned for a brief look at the monitor, Kevin Clancy pointed to the spot.

Rangers secured a third consecutive Scottish Premiership win, with Vaclav Cerny's exquisite double effectively sealing the points before Ianis Hagi's late red card.

The Czech scored either side of the interval to ensure the Ibrox side end the weekend still five points back from Celtic and Aberdeen.

Hagi, introduced at half-time to make his first appearance since last August following a contractual issue, assisted the second goal.

However, the Romanian's night ended badly, his high challenge on Adama Sidibeh's shin being upgraded from a yellow card after a VAR check.

Although stretched at times by St Johnstone's attacking intent in transitions and robust defending, Cerny's brilliant intervention broke the deadlock for Rangers.

Liverpool's Ryan GravenberchImage source, Getty Images

Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool): He was excellent. He is growing into that holding midfielder that we all thought Liverpool needed. Liverpool thought they needed it when they tried to sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer, but Gravenberch looks like a powerhouse and is getting better and better with each game.

Mateo Kovacic (Manchester City): He got two goals in the win against Fulham and people will focus on that but he also broke the play up and kept the ball moving really well. He had a bit of the dark arts in there too, helping Manchester City to see out the game.

Mikkel Damsgaard (Brentford): He picked up two assists in a topsy-turvy win over Wolves. I had a friend who was at the match and I asked him who the best player was - he said Damsgaard and I trust his opinion.

Everton grabbed their first point of the Women's Super League season as they fought hard to hold Arsenal to a goalless draw at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal dominated possession and pushed forward throughout, but were unable to find a way through a resilient Everton defence.

Emily Fox hit the woodwork early on for the Gunners, while Toffees goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan kept out multiple efforts from Mariona Caldentey and Frida Maanum.

The result leaves Arsenal sixth in the WSL table after three games, two points off leaders Manchester City, while Everton are next to bottom.

    Troy Deeney's TOTW

    Trent Alexander-ArnoldImage source, Getty Images

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool): Another clean sheet for Liverpool. I don't think that is being spoken about enough. Some of the passes he played in the win at Crystal Palace with the outside of his foot were easy on the eye, like the one he played to Mohamed Salah to set him away. He just looks more comfortable and more confident.

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool): Monster. Powerhouse. He never looks worried or concerned. The complaints about a penalty were daft, it was really good defending. The player was never getting there and Van Dijk just made sure. It was another captain-like performance from the big centre-half, who Liverpool need to tie down to a new contract as soon as possible.

Michael Keane (Everton): He gets a lot of stick and is under a lot of pressure at Everton. The fans aren't having him one bit. James Tarkowski, who normally gets a lot of credit, was poor and Keane was solid as ever cleaning up for him.

Diogo Dalot (Manchester United): He hasn't been great this season but has been very consistent for Manchester United over the last couple of years. Whether he's at left-back or right-back, he plays really well. He helped his team to get a good point at high-flying Aston Villa and a result Manchester United really needed.

  12. Blanchard double gives Palace first WSL win in Leicesterpublished at 09:56 British Summer Time 7 October 2024

Annabel Blanchard scored twice to deliver Crystal Palace's first ever win in the Women's Super League as they defeated Leicester 2-0 at King Power Stadium.

The WSL newcomers suffered heavy defeats by Tottenham and Chelsea in their opening two games, but Blanchard's clinical 55th-minute strike marked a turnaround in the Eagles' misfortunes.

Blanchard sprinted on to a clever flick from Katie Stengel before burying the ball into the bottom left corner for Palace's first WSL goal.

The English forward then converted from the spot after Ruby Mace recklessly brought down Lexi Potter in the area.

The win lifts Palace off the bottom of the table and into eighth, above Leicester in 10th.

  13. Who has made Troy's Premier League team of the week?published at 09:54 British Summer Time 7 October 2024

After every round of Premier League matches this season, BBC football pundit Troy Deeney will give you his team and manager of the week.

Here are this week's choices. Do you agree? Give us your thoughts using the thumbs up and thumbs down icons.

Goalkeeper - Jordan Pickford (Everton): I've given Jordan a lot of stick over the course of this season because I think he's played awful at times, but now I'm going to give him his flowers. I thought he played really well against Newcastle, not only with his penalty save, but I thought he was more measured and more controlled. He got hold of his team, claimed a clean sheet and earned them a well-deserved point.

Ashleigh Neville was adjudged to have fouled Sophie Roman Haug in the box and Hobinger stepped up to guide the ball past the outstretched arm of Tottenham goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.

Clare Hunt had scored in the 83rd minute, from Neville's cross, as Tottenham looked to have sealed a point.

Manchester City picked up a comfortable Women's Super League victory against West Ham as Jill Roord started her first match since recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Netherlands midfielder Roord, 27, the club's record signing, came off the bench in last week's 1-0 victory over Brighton but played 45 minutes from the start at Joie Stadium this time around.

She contributed to a routine win for City despite manager Gareth Taylor leaving several key players out of the starting XI.

With a European tie against Barcelona to come on Wednesday, Taylor handed a first start in 256 days for Roord, who looked sharp on her full return.

She linked up well with England international Lauren Hemp, who capped off another impressive display with a goal in the first half.

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz won't join up with the German national team has he stays behind to have injuries assessed.

The official German national team X account (formerly Twitter), said that Havertz won't be joining up because of 'knee problems'.

It is correct that Havertz will be staying back with Arsenal as he is checked over but the problems aren't thought to be serious as he completed the full match against Southampton as the Gunners won 3-1 on Saturday.

  19. Why will Chelsea receive a fine?published at 09:36 British Summer Time 7 October 2024

    Chelsea 1-1 Nottingham Forest

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Enzo Maresca has played down ill-discipline concerns after Chelsea received six or more yellow cards for the second time this season and will receive a fine of £50,000 after a feisty match with Nottingham Forest.

The Italian manager oversaw a 1-1 draw with Forest as six of his players, including Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella, were booked with the defensive duo now suspended for the match following the international break away at Liverpool.

Chris Wood opened the scoring and Noni Madueke equalised in a hectic second half where James Ward-Prowse was sent off for deliberate handball to cut out a counterattack from Nicolas Jackson.

Then followed a mass altercation involving the majority of both of the two squads, with videos showing Jackson apparently slapping Forest defender Morato.

When asked if ill-discipline is a concern, Maresca said: "It’s something we need to improve but overall, I like the team the way they are fighting. I like the way they are becoming a team in these kinds of things. I don’t see any problems about that.

"For sure, there are things that we can control and do better, for sure no doubt, and probably this is one of the things. But if you ask me about the team spirit, the way they are fighting together, the way they are doing things together, I’m very happy."

He further explained that there are no concerns about losing Cucurella and Fofana for Liverpool in two weeks, adding: "The good news is they are all ready."

Answering whether getting a £50,000 fine, which is double the initial £25,000 fine received after the away match at Bournemouth, is an issue, explaining "I am not going to pay it!"

Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo was himself booked and echoed his counterpart's sentiments: "I was there also. I went there to try to calm it down. It is very hard for the platters to control their emotions. Very hard for us as managers to do that. So many responsibilities. We need the referees to understand."

No team received more bookings than Chelsea in the Premier League last season.
