Manchester City defender John Stones feels Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi has really "bought into" their partnership in defence for England.

There were question marks over who would partner Stones at centre-back after Manchester United's Harry Maguire was left out of the final squad, but Guehi has stepped in seamlessly and received plenty of praise for his performances in the first two games at his first major tournament.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Stones said 23-year-old Guehi had been "so good" and added: "For him to come in, not having felt the kind of feelings around tournament football before or these kind of games, all the different emotions that come with it that you've never experienced before, he has handled them so well in his performances.

"I said to him: 'When we're in this, whoever we're playing with, I'm your right arm, you're my left, we do this together - I've got your back.' He's bought into that.

"I believe massively, in partnerships, that you do it all together."

  16. 'Amazing achievement'published at 13:26 27 June

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard believes Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi has "all the attributes to take him a long way".

The 23-year-old has won plaudits for his performances in England's opening three games at Euro 2024 - his first major tournament.

Guehi has impressed since moving to Palace in 2012 from the Blues, where he came through the academy and made his first-team debut as a 19-year-old in the League Cup.

"I'm delighted for him," Lampard told the Football Daily podcast. "I gave him his debut at Chelsea and he is a really polite, humble lad.

"You could see that he had all the attributes to take him a long way - particularly the personality: he wanted to do well. I liked the idea of working with him at the time because when a young kid comes through and shows that humility and wants to do well, that is an amazing thing to work with as a coach.

"But to go away and play as he did at Palace and come into an England squad with high pressure and people saying 'I'm not sure about that', his position is now the one position we are not talking about, which is an amazing achievement from him.

"He has come into this team and is doing a job and doing it really well. That is very refreshing to see."

Gareth has had a squad strong in attacking players for 8 years, and now as much as ever. Yet he never gets the most out of them. I think he is more afraid of winning than he is of losing, as it may raise fans expectations even further.

Have to feel a bit for Southgate. Got us further than the other managers these last decades and now supporters turning on him. I think he just needs a couple of bold decisions to get the supporters behind him again.

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham was one of the guests on today's edition of the Lions' Den, a daily broadcast from the England camp over in Germany.

Bellingham has been discussing England's last 16 tie against Slovakia:

"I think that you're always going to have tough games at this point in the tournament. I think people look at the draw and see Slovakia and think it will be an easy game. It definitely is not the case because they will be a different type of threat and will be difficult to break down.

"I think when you play nations who come at you a bit more, it's a lot more open.

"It will be an interesting game, it will be one that we're confident that we have enough to win even though we know we haven't been quite at the levels that we need to be at."
