Wonder if any Premier League clubs will be having a look at Mikautadze? Seems like he could be a bargain buy.

    Jon

Georges Mikautadze is currently leading the way in the race for the Golden Boot. The Metz forward has scored three goals and laid on one assist.

He's actually on a run of scoring a goal in each of his last five games for club and country and has registered 13 times in his last 13 appearances!

Not sure how much of a bargain the 23-year-old would be now that the whole of Europe has seen what he's capable of.

Is he the breakout star of the competition?

  2. Georgia make historypublished at 08:23 27 June

Georgia made history and reached their first major tournament knockout stage with victory over Portugal at Euro 2024.

Portugal had already won the group, but were shocked in their final group stage game before the clock struck two minutes as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drilled a low shot past Diogo Costa.

Underdogs Georgia did not require dominance and made their chances count as Georges Mikautadze delivered from the spot when they were handed a second-half penalty to further propel them to a shock success.

Georgia were content with letting Portugal control possession - as they were steely in defence and closing down space to limit Portugal's chances - and waited for the opportunity to threaten on the counter.

Few opportunities came Georgia's way, but few of any real danger were handed to Portugal; the underdogs held their shape to perfection and caused the Group F winners to become increasingly frustrated.

Cristiano Ronaldo lacked the service to make the difference in the final third, Portugal's midfielders struggled to pass the ball in a way that did anything more than merely boost their possession statistics, and Georgia finished their group stage in fine fashion.

By beating Portugal, Georgia completed the biggest Euros upset in history, based on Fifa rankings, and created a night to remember in their debut major tournament. They will now play Spain in the last 16, while Portugal take on Slovenia.

The path to the Euro 2024 final is clearer now the group stage has completed.

England have landed in the more favourable side of the knockout draw, with Germany, France, Portugal, Spain and Belgium all on the other side of the last-16.

So what is the route to the final?

    Round of 16

    Slovakia

    Quarter-final

    Reigning champions Italy or Switzerland

    Semi-final

    Romania, Netherlands, Austria or Turkey

    FINAL

It would not be until the final when England face one of the 'big hitters' from the opposing side of the draw.

Understandably we focus on England but overall the Euros has been really poor to date & almost all fancied teams have struggled with exception of Spain. It’s time we put aside the ‘they earn so much money’ attitude & realise the cost of flogging the players by FIFA, UEFA & the clubs with too many comps & matches is they can’t perform at their best often enough and quality is being diluted more & more.

    Mark, Spain

    Seems a bit harsh, Mark.

Granted, England's group was pretty dull but Euro 2024 has been largely an enjoyable watch.

    We've had shocks:

    • Georgia, Slovenia and Slovakia making it to the knockout stage.
    • Austria finishing top of Group C with France second and the Netherlands third was a remarkable achievement.

There have been some cracking goals and some high-scoring games too!

BBC Newsbeat's Pete Allison actually caught up with England fan Freddie Hahn - the "sleeping fan" on Wednesday and he confirmed his snooze was before the game started.

Setting the score straight, Freddie insists he didn’t miss any of the game – and was actually sleeping before the game – although he admits there was “room for improvement” in terms of entertainment.

"We were in the ground quite early so that was actually the most opportune moment for napping," Freddie, from Crawley, told Newsbeat.

He puts his Euros doze down to having a few beers, the sun and "having a one-year-old son back home – so being able to get some peace and quiet wherever I can."

By chance, he went to the same school as Gareth Southgate so says the manager "gets a bit of extra leeway" after Tuesday's snooze fest.

Slovakia v England is a weird feeling for me as I am half Slovak but have lived in England my whole life. Who should I support?!

Belgium reached the knockout stages of Euro 2024 as group runners-up - but Ukraine exited the competition following their goalless draw in Stuttgart.

All four teams in Group E started the evening level on points and with a chance of progression.

But an inferior goal difference meant Ukraine knew their fate also depended on the outcome of Slovakia's tie with Romania, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

They were unable to make an impact in Stuttgart - limiting Belgium to few chances but lacking a consistent attacking threat of their own until late on.

Leicester City's Wout Faes was a standout performer in Belgium's defence, making two crucial blocks late on to stop Artem Dovbyk testing goalkeeper Koen Casteels.

Meanwhile, Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne provided a sprinkling of much-needed quality as he curled a free-kick just wide in the first half.

Belgium, though, came closest to scoring when Romelu Lukaku scuffed a shot straight at goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin from close range, before substitute Yannick Carrasco tested Trubin too.

In the end, Domenico Tedesco's side progressed having lost one, drawn one and won one of their three group matches. But they will need to improve with World Cup finalists France up next in the last 16.

England v Slovakia. Two teams who are going to play for a draw in sweltering heat. What a dreadful spectacle this is set up to be. The winner most likely loses to Italy who again invariably play for a penalty shootout and at least prepare their players to take penalties.

Looking forward to Sunday then, Jeff?

Romania finished top of Group E as they and Slovakia reached the last 16 at Euro 2024 with an entertaining draw in Frankfurt.

Ondrej Duda gave Slovakia a 24th-minute lead when he got in behind the Romanian defence to power in a header from Juraj Kucka's pinpoint cross.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent, and Romania equalised before half-time as Razvan Marin fired a ferocious penalty into the top corner after David Hancko fouled Ianis Hagi in the box.

They finished top, with Belgium second in the group after a draw with Ukraine, who were eliminated.

Slovakia advance as one of the best third-placed sides and face England in the last 16.

It was the first time in Euros history that all four teams within a single group have finished on the same points.

  18. Good morning!published at 07:00 27 June

    Welcome along.

In the blink of an eye, the group stage of Euro 2024 is done and dusted and now we go on to the business end of the competition with knockout football.

England now know that they will face Slovakia in the last 16.

Sadly, we have got two days to wait until the next round of fixtures begin.

The positive side of that is it gives us some time to take a breath, reflect and look at what is to come over the next couple of weeks.
