On interest in Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the transfer market:

You have to look at the long-term prospect and if he wants to stay in the England squad. We saw what happened to Jordan Henderson.

The standards will be lower [in Saudi Arabia]. If he goes to Chelsea then he is still playing at a top level and will be someone Lee Carsley will consider.

But there is still every chance he stays at Brentford and sees his contract out. Then he can have the pick of the clubs next summer without the £50m price tag around his neck.

He has got a lot of thinking to do, and while he is still playing at Brentford and in the Premier League, he is still in a really good position.

It should not be overlooked that if he chooses to stay he has still got the opportunity to impress and have the pick of many sides next summer.

AFC Wimbledon are looking to equal their best-ever result in the Carabao Cup with a win over Ipswich tonight.

The League Two outfit progressed to the third round in the 2021/22 season but were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal.

Johnnie Jackson's side won 2-1 away at Bromley in August to set up this clash with newly-promoted Ipswich and are hoping to cause a shock.

Jackson said in his pre-match conference: “Any 11 that their manager Kieran McKenna picks is going to be packed full of quality. It’s going to be a difficult evening for us, regardless of who plays, but it’s a brilliant challenge for my lads.”

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola will probably still be angry with VAR after the decision to rule out a late winner for his side against Newcastle at the weekend.

Dango Ouattara's effort was ruled out in stoppage time, with the video assistant referee deciding that the ball had hit his arm rather than his shoulder before being directed into the net.

Meanwhile, the Cherries are still working to strengthen their squad before Friday's transfer deadline, and have agreed a deal to sign goalkeeper Kepa from Chelsea.

"If we can sign him it will provide us the experience he has from playing with Chelsea, Real Madrid and the pressure that comes with playing in those kinds of games," said Iraola.

"It will add competition to the team."

It's Scott Parker's first taste of the Carabao Cup as Burnley boss and it's been an encouraging start to life at Turf Moor for the 43-year-old.

After being relegated last season, the Clarets made an impressive start to Championship life with a 4-1 win at Luton followed by a 5-0 victory at home over Cardiff.

Their unbeaten run ended on Saturday after a 1-0 loss at Sunderland. Changes could be on the cards for Parker tonight with a home tie against East Lancashire rivals Blackburn on Saturday.

Parker said: “It definitely gives us an opportunity to bounce back, the games come thick and fast.

“It’s a Premier League outfit, a good test. We’ll go over what went wrong on Saturday, get it out of our system, reboot and go again on Wednesday night."

Wolves are one of five Premier League sides to have lost their opening two fixtures and Gary O'Neil will be hoping to record their first win of the season tonight.

The Molineux crowd witnessed a heavy 6-2 defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Sunday and O'Neil refused to pile any blame on his players.

"I want to be really clear, I'm not sat here blaming players, I'll never ever do that. It's always our responsibility," said the head coach.

"Whatever goes wrong out there whether it's part of my plan or a misunderstanding, it all comes down to me."

"A tough afternoon for the fans which I apologise for on my part because I don't want them to suffer games like that. We played Arsenal and Chelsea, lost our captain [Max Kilman] and probably best player [Pedro Neto], if anyone thought this first two weeks was going to be easy, I knew it wasn't."

  9. EFL Cup third round drawpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 28 August

The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place after the conclusion of the tie between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

The seven English clubs involved in European competitions this season, including holders Liverpool, will enter at the third-round stage.

Ties will take place on weeks commencing 16 and 23 September.

Because there are rounds of Champions League and Europa League fixtures also scheduled for those two midweeks, the six clubs involved in those competitions - Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United - will be kept apart to ensure they can fulfil their Carabao Cup tie in the alternate midweek to their European fixture.

Those six clubs will take part in a pre-draw before Forest v Newcastle to decide if they will be at home or away in the third round, with a main draw determining the 16 ties later in the evening.

Should Chelsea progress to the next phase of the Conference League, they will not be in action in that competition again until the start of October.
