A way the Premier League could incentivise teams to keep trying after they've already won the league would be to distribute prize money more proportionally to the number of points a team finishes on, as opposed to it just being on their final position in the table. The winning team would still receive the most but they would also have a reason to win their remaining games if they win the league with games to spare.

Brighton's match-winner Jack Hinshelwood came off the bench against Liverpool alongside his cousin Harry Howell, but his family links to football go far deeper.

On Football Focus in September, former Brighton striker Glenn Murray spoke to three members of the four generations of the Hinshelwood family who have been professional footballers.

Jack's father Adam also played for Brighton and is managing York City in the National League play-off semi-final against Oldham on Tuesday.

    • Virgil van Dijk failed to feature in a Premier League game for Liverpool for the first time since 16 September 2023 (a 3-1 win at Wolves), having started and played every single minute of the Reds’ previous 69 league games.
    • The Netherlands defender was just two full games away from becoming the first player to play every single minute of every game in two separate Premier League title-winning campaigns.
    • Brighton’s 12 shots on target is the most the Reds have faced in a Premier League match on record.

Arteta's comments about Liverpool have been completely overblown. He said light-heartedly/smiling that they have won the league with fewer points than Arsenal got (factually correct) in other seasons, not that they would end up with fewer points at the end of season. In the context of 'right place, right time', it's not a ridiculous thing to say.

    Tom in Leyton

I think the main issue, Tom, was that Arsenal had accrued those points over an entire season. When he made that comment, Liverpool still had four games to play. How many points did Arsenal have after 34 games in 2022-23 and 2023-24?

  8. 'If you are good enough, you will play' - Hurzeler after Howell debutpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time

    Brighton 3-2 Liverpool

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Harry Howell became Brighton's youngest player as he made his Premier League debut as a substitute against Liverpool, with the 17-year-old coming on alongside his cousin Jack Hinshelwood.

"[He was] impressive," said the Seagulls' head coach Fabian Hurzeler. "[He has been in] training only weeks now and how he changed and how he adapted to the first team environment - it's a special player for his young age. I always give young players a chance because, for me, it is not about age, it's about if you deserve it then you will play, and if you're good enough you will play. I'm not afraid of giving young players a chance and that is what the club is standing for, so I'm very happy for him.

"I always say every player is important and if you show togetherness every time, if everyone understands his role and if everyone knows that 'if I'm a sub I can have an impact on the game when I come into it'.

"It's also how you prepare as a sub. Are you disappointed? Yes, maybe you're disappointed because you don't start but, you always have to be ready when you come into a game to have an impact on it and therefore, I'm really proud of how the players who came in changed the momentum for us."

  10. Liverpool on course for lowest winning points tally since 2016?published at 10:17 British Summer Time

Liverpool v Crystal Palace (Sun, 16:00 BST)

If Liverpool beat Crystal Palace on Sunday then they will finish the season with 86 points - the same as Manchester City when they won the Premier League by 12 points in 2020-21.

If they don't, they will have the lowest points total from a league-winning side since Leicester in 2015-16 (81).

Let's see how the Palace players perform after their own celebrations. The Eagles will show off the FA Cup at home to Wolves later before visiting Anfield on Sunday.

Re: 08:28 - How many times in the recent past have Liverpool come second with 90+ point seasons? It is meaningless. You have to get the most points in a season, that's it. We did it this year and Arsenal have failed to do it for many years. Cry me a river.

    Brighton 3-2 Liverpool

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's win against the champions was only one of the positive takeaways for boss Fabian Hurzeler.

He said that fellow German Brajan Gruda had "his best game" for the Seagulls since the 20-year-old midfielder joined from Mainz last summer, claiming his fourth assist of the season.

"It's so important to understand that behind the player is a person," said Hurzeler. "It's a person who comes from a different culture, a different country. He comes without his family, the first time away from his family and he's a very family-driven character, so it's very important to understand the background of everything and not only see that the player has to perform - they're not machines, we always have to see the person behind it.

"He suffered a lot [with injuries] but one thing I can say is he never gave up. He always tried to improve in training, he showed character, he showed good reactions in training, he had some self-doubts but his belief in himself was bigger.

"It should be a sign for him that with hard work and with sacrifices this season during this period that he can achieve something."

I love stats and records as much as anyone but, once Liverpool won the league against Tottenham, there were no impressive records to really aim for and motivate the players. They weren't going to break points totals and they weren't unbeaten. If the experimentation of fringe players results in a few bad performances and defeats but also brings in new transfers and causes tactical change-ups, that will help Liverpool win a major trophy next season, then they and their fans won't care. And rightly so.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot on squad rotation: "They played their part in certain games, played their part definitely at our training ground. I think the Chelsea game and this game, there were moments for them to show themselves and they have worked so hard throughout the season - they deserved playing time as well because many of them have to go to the national team.

"Jarell Quansah and Harvey Elliot might go to the national team, the under-21s. They're going to play in a tournament so it's important for them to have their playing time and that's why in the last few games we've rotated a bit.

"For me, that's not the reason we've dropped points against Chelsea and Brighton, because Chelsea and Brighton are teams where we are not the only one to drop points [against]."

Does Liverpool's points tally matter? Absolutely not to us Liverpool fans. Ask me in a few years how many points they got and I won't remember. It is winning the league that matters most. It was job done weeks ago. The lads have been on their jollies and still no-one is anywhere near us.

    Hurzeler proud of Brighton performance

After watching his side twice come from behind to beat Premier League champions Liverpool, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said: "There have been a lot of highs and lots of lows, and I think it's important to not overreact and get too euphoric after this moment.

"It's very important to stay grounded, to stay humble and to keep focus on the work we have to do because there is still one game to go, but I am really proud of the performance from the team - how they stick together, how they showed belief and how they reacted from the setbacks during the game.

"So overall, it was not a perfect performance from us but we always showed great character and I think that's very important, especially for this young group.

"It's not only about playing a football game and the tactical side, it's also the mental side. We stayed together, we showed character, we showed personality. We had a really young squad on the pitch and they reacted quite well to the setbacks in an impressive way. That's what we always try to emphasise, that we can only be successful as a team if we stick together, and they proved that today.

"The players changed the intensity on the pitch, they used the goal as a wake-up signal. Before, we suffered a lot as Liverpool played an impressive first 20 minutes, but afterwards we showed a great reaction. We showed personality and we showed more character in possession."

I must admit that I'm kind of annoyed at Liverpool for giving up in their last games. They are clearly in their jollies already and it is skewing the league table positions. Brighton, Chelsea and Arsenal have all got points they shouldn't have. I don't quite know how you avoid this but it is still annoying.

Monday's win saw Brighton complete a remarkable home record against the Premier League's 'big six' in the league this season.

Now only are the Seagulls unbeaten against them at the Amex Stadium, but they have dropped just two points from their six league games at home to the 'big six':

    • 24 Aug - Brighton 2-1 Man Utd
    • 6 Oct - Brighton 3-2 Tottenham
    • 9 Nov - Brighton 2-1 Man City
    • 4 Jan - Brighton 1-1 Arsenal

So Liverpool will finish the season with fewer points than Arsenal earned when finishing runners-up last season.

Arne Slot's side have picked up two points from a possible nine since clinching the title, but they have spent the past week celebrating in Ibiza and Dubai.

So does Liverpool's final points tally matter? Or did Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta have a point when he said that his side could have two titles in the bag?
