Swindon temporarily went top with their lunchtime win at Newport but Walsall's fine comeback at home to Bristol Rovers means they're back in pole position.

Grimsby are up to third courtesy of their win at Salford and Gillingham drop to fourth after defeat to MK Dons who move into the play-off places.

Steve Cotterill won his first game back in charge of Cheltenham to move the Robins off the foot of the table where they are replaced by Newport who have taken just one point from their past nine games.

I would say it's going to be a long old season for Posh, but to be fair it's only just turned October and it's already close to being over.

    Fergie, Peterborough

Peterborough stay bottom of the pile after a 2-1 loss to Bolton. They had been due to face leaders Stevenage next but that game has been postponed due to the international break - so their next game is a biggie against Burton on 18 October.

  4. Stevenage go toppublished at 17:22 BST 4 October

Stevenage's 2-0 victory over Luton sees them fly to the top of the table to displace Bradford City.

Cardiff's crazy 4-3 win against Leyton Orient is rewarded with a rise into third place, back within touching distance of the apex.

Burton's draw with Doncaster means they get closer to escaping the bottom four but Peterborough and Blackpool make no progress.

Last season's play-off semi-finalists Wycombe are also dancing dangerously close to the relegation line but just keep out thanks to late goals in their 2-2 draw with Barnsley.

  5. 'Clinical' Walsall come from behind to edge in-form Roverspublished at 17:17 BST 4 October

    FT: Walsall 2-1 Bristol Rovers

    Sanny Rudravajhala
BBC Radio 5 Live at Bescot Stadium

After the first 45 minutes, I didn’t see us finishing with this scoreline. In fact, even until Aaron Pressley’s towering header to equalise, I thought Bristol Rovers had done enough.

Walsall however, have won without playing their best football but were clinical when it mattered and, crucially, secured a result that will banish any lingering doom after last season’s play-off final failure, following that capitulation at the top of the tree.

Once Pressley had cancelled out Fabrizio Cavegn’s excellent swivelled opener, the mood completely changed. Walsall with the wind in their sails and the fans onside, saw Pressley through again and the turnaround was complete.

Frustrating for the away fans as their unbeaten run comes to an end, as Walsall match it by going seven unbeaten themselves.

  6. 'Huddersfield got exploited'published at 17:15 BST 4 October

    FT: Huddersfield 1-2 Stockport

    Matt Glennon
Former Huddersfield keeper on BBC Radio Leeds

Huddersfield sat back and allowed Stockport to have the ball high up the pitch, and Stockport are a good team, we saw the same in the Exeter game - but Exeter aren't as good as Stockport.

Huddersfield got exploited and Stockport got the goals because they kept taking the ball off Huddersfield and we couldn't get any momentum.

We were trying to catch them on the break with players that weren't quick enough to do that. Alfie May is not going to outsprint Stockport, he is a technical player, a quality player, but his is not going to outsprint the back line.

    Walsall 2-1 Bristol Rovers

The Saddlers ride off with the points as they come from behind thanks to Aaron Pressley's double.

    Huddersfield 1-2 Stockport

What an effort from Stockport to end Huddersfield's unbeaten home record and pick up their first win at the West Yorkshire club since April 2000.

Ollie Norwood's penalty gave the visitors the lead at the break before they had Tyler Onyango dismissed for two yellow cards in the space of five second-half minutes.

But, down top 10 men, they doubled their lead through Odin Bailey's fine finish.

Bojan Radulovic's late header gave the Terriers some hope but it's the second time this season they've lost to 10 men.

Stevenage claims victory with two second-half goals to top the table.

A stilted first-half was followed by a much better performance from the hosts, seeing two great goals from Chem Campbell and Jordan Roberts to take victory.

This probably wasn't Boro at their best but they still get the result. Are we looking at some strong promotion contenders?
