  1. Are Liverpool realistic title contenders?published at 08:05 British Summer Time 18 October

That’s a question the next three weeks or so will play a big part in answering as the Reds face a crunch run of seven games in 21 days, starting with the visit of Chelsea on Sunday.

After hosting the Blues, the Liverpool will play Arsenal, Brighton and Aston Villa in the league, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot will speaking to the media at 09:00 BST today ahead playing Chelsea and we’ll find out how much of a test of credentials he thinks it’ll be for his top-of-the-table side.

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah should be fresh for the games coming up after they returned early from international duty.

Centre-back Van Dijk was sent-off in a Nations League game against Hungary and forward Salah scored for Egypt in a 2-0 victory over Mauritania in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying - both on Friday, 11 October - before they were released by their countries.

One player not available is keeper Alisson Becker, who is expected to be out with a hamstring injury until the next international break in November at the earliest.

Caoimhin Kelleher is set to replace the Brazil keeper and he will have another chance to prove his ambitions that he can step up and become a number one at Liverpool or elsewhere.

It’s still all quiet on the contracts front when it comes to Trent-Alexander Arnold, Salah and Van Dijk extending their deals beyond next summer so has Slot got any update on that? We'll find out this morning.

  4. Ederson feels Man City have post-Pep planpublished at 07:51 British Summer Time 18 October

Wolves v Man City (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has confirmed he turned down a huge offer to move to Saudi Arabia last summer.

Ederson decided to stay after an extensive chat with manager Pep Guardiola, whose own future is up in the air as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Speaking to Brazilian TV channel TNT Sports Brazil, Ederson says his decision to stay at City was not just based on Guardiola being there.

"No, not at all," he said. "Today City is a very well structured club, well managed, with great directors and a great CEO (Ferran Soriano).

"I believe the club already has the next manager in mind to the day Pep decides to leave and that they will try to follow the same line of work.

"Of course it'd be a great loss, we're talking about the best manager in the world, but I see a really well prepared club for the post-Pep Era."

It is felt Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso is prominent in their thinking, although there is a view Guardiola will eventually commit to at least another year with the Blues.

  5. 'I'd describe his character as world class'published at 07:46 British Summer Time 18 October

Liverpool v Chelsea (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Graham Potter

Moises was only 19 when we brought him over from Ecuador in 2021 and, when we sent him out on loan in Belgium a few months later, the team he joined were struggling at the bottom of the league.

Moises found that spell quite tough. We spoke to him a lot at that time, and also when he came back to Brighton at the start of 2022, when he felt he was still adapting to the intensity of the training sessions and the way the game is played over here.

Because he always had the physicality for the demands of the Premier League, we knew that once he did adapt he would be able to cope with it, no problem.

He just needed time, and the right pathway into the first team - we knew he was talented but we were never going to throw him off the plane from Ecuador and straight on to the pitch.

We tried to give him everything he needed, but the other thing that helped him make such an impact was his attitude. I would describe his character as world class, and I am sure it has made a difference for him at Chelsea too.

Moises is a mix of someone who wants to learn and improve, but is also highly intelligent anyway. The way he approaches things is the perfect combination for a manager or coach to work with, and because of that I always thought his future was extremely bright.

  6. 'He joined a club in transition'published at 07:42 British Summer Time 18 October

Liverpool v Chelsea (Sun, 16:30 BST)

    Graham Potter

It is just over a year since Chelsea beat Liverpool to the race to buy Moises Caicedo from Brighton, for an initial £100m fee - that could rise to a British record.

There is sometimes an expectation that you sign players and they are going to hit the ground running, and be some kind of instant solution to whatever problem you have got.

What people often misunderstand is that you have been watching a player who is playing a certain way, and functioning well in a well-functioning team.

When you put him in a different situation, and in a team that is not functioning in the same way, you don't get the same player - temporarily, anyway. They just need some help and support to get back to that point.

You have to understand the context of the club he went to, because it is fair to say Chelsea were in a period of transition for a couple of years, including the time I was there as manager.

It was probably similar for Marc Cucurella, who also moved from Brighton to Chelsea in 2022. All of a sudden you are at a new club, with new team-mates and a new context. If the team is not doing well, that makes it even harder.

It is difficult for all players - not just young ones - and, just like he did when he first came to England, Moises had to adapt.

On Riccardo Calafiori's arm there's a tattoo featuring the words "never give up".

For the 22-year-old Arsenal and Italy defender it is a reminder of just how close he came to his dreams of a career in football being ended before it had really started.

At the age of 16, Calafiori suffered a serious knee injury while playing in a Uefa Youth League match for AS Roma, rupturing all of the ligaments in one of his knees.

It was so bad he feared he even might struggle to walk, let alone kick a ball again.

"This was my first tattoo and it was for this reason," he said.

"It was so tough. I was 16 and suddenly you start to think I can't play football ever again."

  10. Man Utd officials meet 1958 fan grouppublished at 07:30 British Summer Time 18 October

Man Utd v Brentford (15:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

The demonstrations of 2023 and before have ceased at Manchester United despite the club's poor form.

Most now seem content to see how the club evolves following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's installation as co-owner.

Nevertheless, the 1958 Group that organised many of the protests still exists and has morphed into FC58.

The group held talks with United's chief operating officer Collette Roche and director of fan engagement Rick McGagh.

The talks have been described as 'productive'.

Chris Haymes, Policy Steering representative for FC58, said: “Over the last few years we have received an unprecedented mandate to represent our fan base in matters of great importance.

"We are not going to let anyone down. FC58 is a powerful new vehicle to take us further forward. The fans are the lifeblood and beating heart of any football club and need to be listened to.

"This new group is built on the original foundations of The 1958 and aims to be an alternative supporters’ collective and representation. It’s founded on the credibility and integrity we have built from nothing.

"The demands of our supporters on key matters that are in the best interests of everything Sir Matt Busby created, will no longer be ignored. silenced or patronised.

"We want the club to engage with us on a regular basis. They have listened and our meeting was a very important step forward. Being UNITED on and off the pitch is vital so that the fans have a stronger voice. This will make FC58 the largest, truly independent united fan coalition on the planet. We are ambitious, we have big plans, we will make this a success."

Isn't Jack Wilshere's greatest ever goal against Norwich? The one where Arsenal did loads of first-time passes.

Arsenal Under-18s manager Jack Wilshere is poised to join Norwich as first-team coach.

The 32-year-old is expected to complete a move to Carrow Road in the next few days.

It will not be rubber stamped before the Canaries go to Stoke in the Championship on Saturday, with Wilshere due to be in charge of the Gunners' Under-18s game against Aston Villa.

Wilshere will replace Narcis Pelach who left Norwich last month to join Stoke City as head coach.

The former England midfielder is seen as a long-term appointment by the Canaries and compensation is not an issue.

  14. Mainoo out as Man Utd's injury woe continuespublished at 07:18 British Summer Time 18 October

Man Utd v Brentford (15:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

A few people thought tomorrow's game against Brentford would mark the start of a new era at Manchester United.

It doesn't in more ways than one.

To the surprise of many, Erik ten Hag remains as manager (although as Thomas Frank pointed out yesterday, the pressure on the Dutchman is huge). And United also have major injury worries.

The club confirmed yesterday Morocco defender Noussair Mazroaui has returned to training after having a procedure to correct a minor heart complaint.

However, it is doubtful he will be involved against the Bees. United also confirmed England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is likely to be out for 'a few weeks' with the injury he sustained against Aston Villa that ruled him out of the two Nations League games.

Chelsea next play in the Champions League on 13 November when they go to Scotland to face bottom-of-the-group Celtic, who were beaten 4-0 by Real Madrid earlier on Thursday.

Spirited Celtic were eventually swept aside by Real as they lost their second group match in a row in the Women's Champions League.

Real's Scotland international Caroline Weir, not long back from a year out with a knee injury, curled in a brilliant opener from distance after just seven minutes at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium.

However, the hosts initially struggled to add to their early lead as some profligacy and stout Celtic defending kept them at bay.

Last night, Chelsea maintained their 100% start to the season by beating Dutch side Twente to move three points clear at the top of Women's Champions League Group B.

Aggie Beever-Jones gave the Blues a strong start in the Netherlands, scoring after seven minutes when she collected the ball from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and sent a deflected 25-yard strike into the net.

It was 2-0 after 18 minutes as Maika Hamano's long-range lobbed effort caught Twente goalkeeper Olivia Clark off her line, with the Wales international unable to recover in time.

Guro Reiten scored Chelsea's third with a calmly taken penalty after fellow substitute Mayra Ramirez was tripped by Twente's Lieske Carleer.

The hosts pulled one back in the 68th minute when Nikee van Dijk raced on to a pass from Ella Peddemors and shot past Zecira Musovic, but it was not enough to deny the visitors.
