  4. McKenna on 'misconception' of St George's Parkpublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 18 October

Ipswich Town v Everton (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna spoke in-depth about whether it's an indictment on St George's Park that an English coach wasn't appointed as England manager:

"I think it's two separate issues to be honest. For me, St George's Park is very good for so many things - for the development of the game and grassroots football but for the higher level coaches working at higher levels of the game - I've maybe spent two weeks there in the last decade.

"I think your development as a professional coach and a manager, it doesn't come from coaching courses to be honest. I don't think the FA or St George's Park can be held accountable for that. I think your development is in your day-to-day job and within the clubs. I think more of the young coaches, a lot of their development probably comes through the academy systems and I think that's where the large majority of my learning has taken place - not through coaching courses you attend.

"I think probably more pertinent is some of the access to people from the amateur game and the grassroots game to coaching courses in terms of affordability and availability. I know lots of people that have had struggles with that and I think that is more of an issue but for me that is more about developing our football culture in the country, developing the base level of our culture and understanding of football. That isn't necessarily going to translate into the next England manager. I think there is a misconception of what the responsibility for St George's Park is."

It seems fairly obvious Tuchel wasn't the FA's first choice. It clearly didn't want to wait for Pep to decide and/or have Carsley stay until next summer on an interim basis. The last time a manager was manifestly not first choice was Steve McClaren and, sadly, we all know how that worked out.

Arne Slot took a bit of a “mental break” during the latest round of internationals before the Dutchman returned to Liverpool on Tuesday.

He could return home and try to switch off in the knowledge that he had led his side to the top of the Premier League with six wins from their opening seven top-flight games after replacing Jurgen Klopp during the summer.

However, while Slot has consistently highlighted his side have been helped by a favourable fixture list, he knows things are about to get a lot tougher.

Liverpool host Chelsea in the league on Sunday and have top-flight games against Arsenal, Brighton and Aston Villa before another international break in mid-November, as well as tricky cup ties.

“I think we have to judge us as a team after this spell of games,” said Slot.

“Then we know better how we act and how we perform if we play tough Champions League games and tough league games.”

  14. O'Neil: Wolves' tipping point must come soonpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 18 October

Wolves v Man City (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Boss Gary O'Neil admits Wolves cannot continue to rely on excuses and the clock is ticking to find results.

They host Manchester City on Sunday bottom of the Premier League after one point from their opening seven games.

Wolves have faced five of the top seven and by the time they travel to Brighton next week will have played all of them in their first nine matches.

They also sold captain Max Kilman and forward Pedro Neto in the summer while defender Yerson Mosquera suffered a season-ending injury in the defeat at Aston Villa last month but O'Neil concedes Wolves are running out of defences.

He said: "I understand one point from seven isn't good enough and we need to prove we are better than that. That tipping point will come soon.

"We can't sit here forever and say we've had tough games and lost a couple of important players in the summer.

"Now what? Come on then, let's go."

Wolves v Man City (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Boss Gary O'Neil seemed to be revelling in the growing pressure at his press conference but was also again keen to emphasise the context of Wolves' start.

He wants to shoulder the blame for his players, even if they make individual mistakes, because it is his plan they are trying to carry out.

Wolves will have faced all of the current top seven in their opening nine games by the time they face Manchester City on Sunday and go to Brighton next weekend.

Once that is taken into consideration - and the loss of Max Kilman to West Ham and Pedro Neto's departure to Chelsea - maybe Wolves' situation can be better understood.

Regardless, they need to start winning to survive and with Crystal Palace, Southampton and Bournemouth all visiting Molineux next month that is likely to be the "tipping point" in their search for wins O'Neil has described.

So Man Utd have had 2 international windows to make a decision to sack Ten Hag and they haven't taken it. Will they do it in November? They need to as this is not a getting better situation.

I guess the flip side is that sacking managers is a very expensive business, Joe. Plus, sticking by your head coach in theory is the better play, right? More time to get your style across. Look at Mikel Arteta at Arsenal...
