Erik ten Hag returned to Manchester United on Monday to prepare for Saturday’s Premier League game against Brentford at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman was under intense pressure heading into the international break.

Although he followed a terrible 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham with creditable away draws against FC Porto and Aston Villa, there was huge speculation he would lose his job before United’s league campaign resumed.

However, that has not happened and Ten Hag is focussing on turning United’s season round.

Wolves head coach Gary O'Neil on his side's start to the season: "Points-wise it's been very bad. If you look at performances I'll be the biggest critic of my team.

"We sit here seven games in with one point. If you don't look into the depths of how and why it looks like a disaster. There's two very tough games coming up in the next ten days as well.

"But, if you do take the time to look into the situation and the fixtures you will easily see there is enough there to have a real clear view we can turn this around.

"I have 100% faith in myself and the playing group to show everyone we can compete at the level. Really confident and really comfortable I can help the group in this moment and turn things around."

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on Reece James' return: "In this moment I think this can be the solution (to play him once a week). In the future? I don't know. The solution is to go slowly, slowly. In the future we may be able to use him in the week but in this moment we need to use him once a week."

All this talk about whether our national manager should be English overlooks the lack of any credible English managers. We want the best possible outcome for the England team, so hire in the best available manager. Imagine if Man City only employed people from Manchester!

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on the departure of director of football Txiki Begiristain at the end of the season: "Part of me is leaving. A friend of mine, an architect who created one of the best teams at Barcelona and here. Personally he will be missed a lot.

"He made me balanced in this job. I'm so energetic and when we lose I want to destroy everything and he always said "take a moment".

"In all the families we have to move on, and the club will move on.

"We have won a lot. The chairman would have sacked me if the results weren't good. It doesn't matter where you were born, if you don't win people ask for you to be sacked. But if you have success people will support you."

"Of course, but I'm pretty sure the club have options when Pep will leave. Sooner or later it will happen and they have to prepare. It will not be a surprise.

"I want to be really convinced it is the best for the club. I will not delay any action thinking it will be a problem for the club. They understand the problems I will have.

"If the club asks me an opinion [on my successor] I will give them an opinion. But it is not a decision for me. It has to be the club."

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo, midfielder Morgan Gibbs White and Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler have all been sanctioned for incidents which took place when the two clubs played one another last month.

All three received red cards during their Premier League match which ended 2-2.

Espirito Santo has been given a two-match touchline suspension and a £55,000 fine. That punishment has activated a suspended touchline ban which means the Nottingham Forest boss will not be on the touchline for three games.

Gibbs-White has been given a one match ban and £20,000 fine.

Brighton manager Hurzeler has been fined £8,000.

The difference in sanctions comes as Santo and Gibbs-White were found to have been abusive to match officials, while Hurzeler's behaviour was described as "improper". The sanctions were handed out by an independent Regulatory Commission.

  16. Guardola on whether he was approached by Englandpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 18 October 2024

Wolves v Man City (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on whether he was approached by The FA over the England job: "Thomas Tuchel is the manager, I must congratulate him and the FA. It's a big job, after nine years here I wish the very, very best for him.

On whether the England manager should be English: "We don't decide where we're born. Mum and Dad decide that and nine months later we're here. I didn't decide to be Catalan, you don't decide to be English. The federation decide for a foreign manager with a great record. My view is I would support him unconditionally. If he wins he will be praised and if he loses he will be criticised. But it doesn't matter his nationality."

"I know we are proud of where we are from, but the world is so big. You have to be open minded.

I came here to learn from you. It's happening all around the world where people believe they are better than the other one. It happens in Ukraine, in Russia, in Israel and parts of Africa, where people think they are better than the other one.

"I don't like that people criticise just because somebody is born in a different place."
