Match Facts
All eight of Southampton’s Premier League wins against Arsenal have come in home games, most recently in April 2022. It’s the most victories one team has against another in the competition without any coming away from home.
Arsenal have lost just two of their last 16 Premier League games against Southampton (W8 D6), going down in December 2018 (2-3) and April 2022 (0-1).
This is the second time Southampton and Arsenal are meeting on the final day of a Premier League campaign. Saints previously won 3-2 in the final game at the Dell in 2000-01, with the Gunners finishing second for the third season in a row back then.
Having won their final Premier League game in five consecutive seasons between 1998-99 and 2002-03, Southampton have only done so in two of their last 13 top-flight campaigns (D4 L7).
Arsenal haven’t lost their final league game in any of the last 19 seasons (W17 D2) since losing 2-1 at Birmingham in 2004-05. Only Liverpool (24 between 1899-00 and 1926-27) have had a longer run in English league history.
Arsenal have won their final Premier League game of the season 23 times, more than any other side in the competition’s history. Indeed, the Gunners have won on MD38 in each of the last 13 campaigns.
Southampton have lost 29 Premier League games this season. Defeat here would see them become the first team to lose 30 times in a single campaign in the competition’s history, while also the first team to do so in a 38-game top-flight season.
Aaron Ramsdale has started 29 Premier League games for Southampton this season, also starting 37 games for Bournemouth in 2019-20 and 38 for Sheffield United in 2020-21 when they went down. If he starts this game, he’ll be the fourth player to start 30+ games for a specific relegated side in three different seasons, along with Steve Chettle (Nottingham Forest in 1992-93, 1996-97, 1998-99), Robert Green (Norwich 2004-05, West Ham 2010-11, QPR 2014-15) and Ben Foster (Birmingham 2010-11, West Brom 2017-18, Watford 2019-20).
Arsenal haven’t conceded more than twice in any of their 57 matches in all competitions this season. Only twice in the Premier League era has a side gone through an entire campaign without conceding 3+ goals in a game, with Manchester United doing so in both 2007-08 (57 games) and 2017-18 (56 games). The only top-flight team to play more without conceding 3+ is Liverpool (62 in 1970-71 and 63 in 1985-86).
Arsenal’s highest goalscorers in the Premier League this season are Kai Havertz (9), Gabriel Martinelli (8) and Leandro Trossard (8). The last time the Gunners went through a league season without anyone netting at least 10 goals was 1923-24.
