Sixteen-year-old midfielder Reggie Walsh is making his first start for Chelsea and is the youngest player to ever start a European match for the club.

Walsh made his debut off the bench last week in Stockholm but such was the surprise at his inclusion that his family hadn't travelled.

After arriving back in London at 4am, they were back taking him to school by 12 noon as he is still doing his GCSEs.

But they get to enjoy seeing him play from the start here at Stamford Bridge and he is making this reporter feel old.

Tokmac Nguen has an early chance for Djurgarden. The ball drops to him on the edge of the box but he fluffs his shot.

An early goal would be huge for the away side.

Red smoke is swirling round Old Trafford following the release of a barrage of fireworks before the teams came out.

The atmosphere is intense and the Athletic Bilbao fans are making plenty of noise.

Manchester United cannot mess this up.

    Surely?

If Ange Postecoglou doesn't win this competition he'll be out of the job and there's talk he'll be out of the job even if they do win it.

He's got his back against the wall and it's vitally important that they win more than Man Utd.

Man Utd are a massive club and want Champions League football but they're in a transitional period.

  11. Why Man Utd have a better record in Europe this seasonpublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 8 May

Man Utd v Athletic Bilbao (20:00 BST, agg 3-0)

    Nedum

With the way that Manchester United have been this season domestically, you could see a world whereby this second leg against Athletic Bilbao does not go the way they want.

But in Europe, United's record has been very different.

I do not feel United play differently in Europe - it is just the kind of teams they are facing. In the Premier League, sides have shown they have got the number of this version of United.

That is because they play them twice a year and have done in many cases for the past ten years or more. Teams know what they are coming up against, the players and the stadium. For most sides in Europe, this is their first time at Old Trafford for years or possibly in their career. They do not really know how best to play against them.

That is why, in reality, taking a three-goal lead to your home ground means it is highly likely you will get through. They know they can do well against this Bilbao side, as we saw last week. While the tie is not done and dusted - it would be wrong to say that it is - anyone thinking about what could go wrong is talking worst case scenarios, not probable ones.

I am a believer that United have got enough professionalism within that squad and can make the stadium as hostile as they need to be to be able to get through. They have got plenty of whatever they need to be able to make it to the final.

It does not need to be beautiful - it just needs to finish with them getting a chance to play for the Europa League trophy.

Manchester United's Ruben Amorim is looking to become the first manager to reach a European final in his first season in charge of an English club since Thomas Tuchel with Chelsea in the 2020-21 Champions League.

Like Tuchel, Amorim took over in the middle of the season.

Jose Mourinho, with the 2016-17 Europa League, is the only United boss to do it before.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says the club can make a statement and prove they are "back" by winning the Conference League.

The Blues are 4-1 up after the first leg of the semi-final at Swedish club Djurgarden last week and are strong favourites to progress to a final against Real Betis or Fiorentina, which will be played in Wroclaw, Poland, on 28 May.

Asked whether winning a trophy, albeit Uefa's third-tier European competition, would be enough to say Chelsea are back, Maresca said: "Yes, for me, winning a trophy, the Conference League, is a statement to say Chelsea is back.

"Because, firstly, you win a trophy and then, if Real Madrid or different clubs didn't play the Conference League, it's because the Conference League is not the level they were at.

"If we play in the Conference League, it's because that's where we are - we need to start from there.

"It's the only trophy that Chelsea didn't win in the past and Chelsea can become the first club in Europe to win all the European competitions, so it's also good for the club.

"From there we will try to win the semi and final. It is a good place to start to build a winners' mentality to win games and trophies.

Spurs fan Chris Cowlin, who is in Norway, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It's very cold, but hopefully the trip will be worth it.

"Nothing is nailed on when it comes to Tottenham. The players have got to grab this opportunity, we have to be thinking we will lift the trophy.

"We've been riddled with injuries, our creative players are missing. This is not going to be an easy game.

"I spoke to a Bodo fan today, and they said they are feeling very confident and that they are in control of the tie. When I asked why, he said because of the plastic pitch."

  17. 'The players know what's at stake'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 8 May

    Bodo/Glimt v Tottenham (20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to TNT Sports: "It's crucial to be disciplined and organised. In second legs of a knockout competition, particularly this deep in the competition, every moment is really important. We have been really good in those areas in Europe and it is going to need a similar performance tonight. are going to need to do both of those well tonight.

"We have had to deal with injuries all year, losing Lucas [Bergvall] and Madders [Maddison] in the last few weeks hasn't been great but having Deki [Kulusevski] back is great for us."

On talk about the pitch: "We like to play quick as well. What is importnat is that we did some things well the other night and I still thing they will be effective tonight so that is what we have got to focus on."

"I don't think the players need much motivation. They know what's at stake and they have earned the right to be here. We will do everything to bring it home tonight."

Some Manchester United fans have tweaked the words to a song they first sang over 20 years ago about following the club to Glasgow - for the 2002 Champions League final in Sir Alex Ferguson's home city.

Now they are singing about going to Bilbao and having too much to drink.

I hope it goes better than 2002. Ferguson's dream return to Glasgow was wrecked by Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-final.

It is one of those ties you look at the history books now and think how didn't they get through.

That said, Real Madrid won the trophy and Zinedine Zidane scored the best goal I have ever seen live in a major final.
