  1. 'Sooner or later we are going to find it'published at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time

FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to TNT Sports: "We make a really good first half, second half we dropped. We changed our pressing for the reason John [Stones] could not continue. Congratulations Aston Villa and keep going."

On whether Stones couldn't continue because of his previous injury: "Yeah."

On Aston Villa: "I would not say no. In the mid-block they are so strong. We have good moments, we had chances, more chances than in the [Manchester] United game, but in the second half we dropped and our pressing was not good enough. We struggled a little bit and we could not drop them well. We found a goal in the end, but too late.

"We struggle to score and we concede goals."

On Phil Foden: "The last one or two games, he has been better. Most of the players have had problems. Sometimes the next season is not the same, the people change and the situation changes. Today we made a really good game."

On getting confidence back: "Step by step, we have nice personalities in the team and sooner or later we are going to find it."

On whether he has to change his approach: "Yeah. I have to do it. Back my players, that is what will be different."

Pep is facing the same complaints as Wenger used to. Beautiful football when it works, but there’s no plan B.

    Chris, Stockport

Interesting to see a lot of City fans complain about injuries, but when their Manchester counterparts did the same last year, it was ridiculed. Also City now have got the least amount of points in the whole league for the last six games. Crisis for sure, but it's City, they'll finish top 5 minimum.

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui speaking to BBC Sport: "We have to battle and be ready to face them and show our strengths."

On Niclas Fullkrug starting: "He has had a few tough months and despite him not being in his best way, we are happy he is back. He will help us and be strong."

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui has made it back in time after spending part of the week in Spain to attend the funeral of his father.

His father Jose, who died at 94, was a champion weightlifter and competed in the Basque sport of stone-lifting.

"When I speak about my father I smile because he has had a great life and is a big character," said Lopetegui on Friday.

"We lost a big person. It has been a hard week."

It's stop-start, really. West Ham will be disappointed because of David Moyes getting them to that standard and enjoying their football again.

This is a test today. Brighton are looking to get back to winning ways.

At home, I fancy West Ham to get over the line.

  6. 'Defensively Forest are different'published at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time

Brentford v Nottingham Forest (15:00 GMT)

    Steph Houghton
Former Manchester City and England captain on Football Focus

It's down to a lot of hard work. Nuno Espirito Santo coming in and applying his philosophy but defensively as a team there has been so much difference in the Forest team.

They are really connected as a unit and even in the moments of transition, the ideas of defending are basic.

Ipswich and Newcastle fans always have one thing in common - love and admiration for one of England's finest ever managers.

Sir Bobby Robson, who guided the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals at Italia 90, is adored at both clubs. There is a statue of him outside Ipswich's Portman Road stadium and another at Newcastle's St James' Park.

Players from Town’s successful 1978 and 1981 squads (which won the FA Cup and Uefa Cup respectively) will be in attendance today, with John Wark set to discuss his memories of playing under Sir Bobby pitchside during half-time.

A graphic in tribute to Sir Bobby, who died in 2009, aged 76, will also be displayed as the teams walk out before kick-off.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "To have that relationship with two clubs is very unique and shows what a man and what a manager he was. I’m aware of that connection and we want to try and do his legacy proud at the weekend."

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna added: "We had 30,000 crowds in League One. That's not because of me or the ownership, but the history of the club. Sir Bobby is an icon of the club and had some great times at Newcastle as well. He's someone who is remembered fondly."

Those saying City will come back and this is a temporary blip are so so wrong. This is an implosion, a systemic fall. Yes they're missing key personnel but I'm not sure something similar to this wouldn't have happened with those players fit. Recruitment has been woeful as City haven't followed Alex Ferguson's philosophy- you recruit before players lose their hunger or get too old.

  9. 'I haven't been good enough'published at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time

FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland speaking to TNT Sports on what was said in the dressing room after their defeat by Aston Villa: "It's a couple of minutes since the game, so not a lot. But of course we are disappointed, it's not good enough. It's not good enough from me."

On Aston Villa: "They're good players, it's difficult to come here but we're Man City we should be out there. We have to continue, we have to believe and we have to keep working hard.

"We have to continue. First I'm looking at myself, I haven't been doing things good enough, I haven't been scoring my chances. I have to do better, I haven't been good enough."

On confidence levels: "Of course, not the best. We know how important confidence is and you can see that it affects every human being. That is how it is, we have to continue and stay positive even though it is difficult."

On Pep Guardiola: "He won the Premier League six times in seven years, so we will never forget that. He will find the solutions. He has been doing that every single year. We still believe in him, we have to work harder than ever right now."

On what Guardiola said to him in the tunnel: "It's the small details, I don't remember right now. I'm thinking we just lost a game, another one. I don't remember but it was probably some small instructions to do things better."

There have been 40 goals in Brentford’s eight home Premier League games so far this season (F26 A14), with the average of five per game currently the highest-ever at a venue in a single Premier League campaign.

While the Bees have won their last five top-flight home games, netting at least three goals on each occasion, Forest’s only Premier League away defeats this season have come against Manchester City and Arsenal.

Only Chelsea (19) and Liverpool (17) have won more away points than Forest this term (14).

Brighton of late drew against Palace and they have gone four games without a win - it's an opportunity for West Ham to pick up some points.

Brighton have got to find a way against West Ham. Teams who sit back and invite Brighton on find it hard.

  12. 'Hurzeler under scrutiny'published at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time

West Ham v Brighton (15:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

For the first time since his arrival at Brighton in the summer, Fabian Hurzeler is under scrutiny.

The 3-1 home defeat by rivals Crystal Palace last Sunday was a blow to Brighton's pride, but the bigger consequence is that it extended the Seagulls' run without a win to four games.

Hurzeler needs to come up with a few answers.

Remarkably, Brighton have never lost in seven visits to London Stadium. Their previous trips have yielded five draws and two wins.

Today would not be a good time to surrender that record.

  13. 'City are weak at the back'published at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time

FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Man City

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
    Ex-England goalkeeper on Final Score

City have been soft at the back and there was very little pressure on the ball. Where they have been difficult to break down and hard to stop, they are not any more.

They are weak at the back now.

Can't understand why Pep is insisting City continue to use a system that is not working. Injuries are not the problem, it no plan B. City will come back from this mess, but must change. To do the same thing in the same way and get different results is madness.

Sack a manager who's brought you six out of the last seven Premier League titles & the Champions League holy grail? You're having a laugh! You'd have a better chance of sacking Sir Alex Ferguson.

What an incredible three years it has been for Ipswich and Kieran McKenna.

On 20 December, 2021 he started work in his first managerial role after building a fine coaching reputation firstly at Tottenham's youth set up and then at Manchester United, working with the first team under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

When he joined Ipswich they were languishing halfway up League One, now, after back-to-back promotions, they are fighting at the top table for the first season since 2001-02.

They come into this after picking up a second win of the season, 2-1 at Wolves last week, but home fans have not had a top-flight victory at Portman Road to celebrate since a 1-0 success over Middlesbrough in April 2002. Will today be the day for that run to end?

In their way is a revitalised Newcastle side that have beaten Leicester 4-0 in the league and Brentford 3-1 in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in the last week.

FT: Aston Villa 2-1 Man City

    Rachel Corsie
Scotland and Aston Villa captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

A really important victory for Aston Villa.

November was a tough month for Villa, but they put themselves above City and closer to those top four spots.

This was a masterclass in Villa's tactical execution - in the first half they didn't have much of the ball but they were effective in the transition.

In the second half Villa had the bravery to hold their own and have a fair share of the opportunities and keep the ball.

City in the last 10 minutes had little moments, but otherwise they struggled to create anything.
