Andreas Weimann's first Derby County goal for more than seven years helped the Rams upstage West Bromwich Albion for their first Championship win of the season.

The Austrian international netted just four minutes after coming off the bench against his former club in a game of few chances.

Weimann's 84th-minute winner came from the Rams' only effort on target, while the closest the hosts came to a goal was a late effort from Jayson Molumby that crashed off the crossbar.

The smash-and-grab nature of Derby's dramatic victory put a dampener on West Brom's celebrations to mark 125 years at The Hawthorns.

It also extends Derby's fine recent record against the Baggies, with the win not only their second over Ryan Mason's side this season, after knocking them out of the Carabao Cup on penalties August, but also their sixth victory in succession in all competitions.

In a largely uneventful game, the most dramatic moments were condensed into the final minutes.

First Derby goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom - who had already been tested by Isaac Price and Nat Phillips - made a huge save to deny Molumby.

Weimann then met a flicked header from fellow substitute Patrick Agyemang – the United States international making his hugely anticipated debut for the Rams – to cut inside before finding the bottom corner to break the deadlock.

It was Weimann's first goal since returning to Derby for a second spell in the summer, having left for Bristol City in 2018 before going on to play for West Brom and Blackburn.

Molumby went on to hit the woodwork in search of an equaliser for a frustrated West Brom side that slip from second to fifth in the table.

Meanwhile, Derby's first three points of the season moves them up to 19th.

'A perfect away performance' - reaction

West Bromwich Albion boss Ryan Mason told BBC Radio WM:

"I think anyone watching the game will say we didn't deserve to lose it when conceding your first shot on target in the 84th minute.

"It's tough to take, but we accept it and have to move on. It won't take away from the fact that it was a really good performance. I thought we had so much control in the game, especially in the first half when we created numerous chances.

"It just didn't really go our way today, which happens. But it was a positive performance.

"Obviously I'm hurting at the moment, and the players are, because we lost a game of football that we certainly didn't deserve to lose."

Derby County head coach John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

When asked it was the perfect away performance, he said: "I think so, yeah. Obviously we didn't want to be as deep as we were in that first half, but we defended the box very well.

"At half-time we just said we wanted to push the team up the pitch another 10 or 15 yards, which we did. We also had to be better with the ball, because we kept giving it away too easy in the first half.

"The second half was a really pleasing performance, and what a great way to win with five minutes to go - one of your subs coming off the bench to score like he did.

"It was great to get Andreas on, I know what he is all about - in those important moments he can put the ball in the net. He has done it for years."
