  4. Who could step up in Colwill's absence?published at 15:40 British Summer Time 8 August

    Chelsea

New signing, Jorrel Hato poses for photos as he signs for ChelseaImage source, Getty Images

With Levi Colwill likely to miss the majority of the new season, Enzo Maresca will have to look for new solutions at the heart of Chelsea's defence.

A relief for the Italian manager will be the sight of seeing Wesley Fofana returning to training this week after a lengthy time on the sidelines.

The France centre-back's time at Chelsea has been hampered by injuries since his move from Leicester City in 2022 and he has not featured since March with a hamstring injury.

Chelsea's other defensive options are new signing Jorrel Hato, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Josh Acheampong.

Hato was signed from Ajax with the view of providing competition for full-back Marc Cucurella but the 19-year-old is also capable of playing as a centre-back.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has had surgery on a serious knee injury and is expected to miss most of the season.

The 22-year-old sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during his first training session after the Club World Cup on Tuesday. ACL injuries typically rule players out for between six and nine months.

Colwill was a near ever-present for Chelsea last season in the Premier League, starting 35 of their 38 matches as they qualified for the Champions League.

When asked if Chelsea needed to sign another defender to replace Colwill at his media conference before friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, Maresca said: "It depends - we will wait and see."

Southampton manager Will Still confirms Tyler Dibling won't be available for their opening Championship game of the season against Wrexham amid talks over a potential move to Everton.

"There are a few players that know where they are in their career and making choices. So Tyler [Dibling] won't be there, Sam [Edozie] won't be there, and Joe Aribo won't be in the squad either." said Still.

    Arsenal

Ethan Nwaneri paid tribute to his roots, mentors and community in a video posted on Arsenal's social media announcing his new contract.

This is what the players had to say in the video:

    This is a letter.

    To the places I've been.

    And the people I've known.

    The places that made me

    The people who shaped me.

The neighbourhoods and the grassroot clubs.

    The pitches, the parks.

The mentors, coaches and day one team-mates.

    Everyone who played a part.

    When I step out there,

    I step out with you.

    I'm from north London.

    And for north London.

So now, for the next step.

    Forward, together!

  11. 'I've definitely become stronger'published at 15:25 British Summer Time 8 August

    Arsenal

A majority of Ethan Nwaneri's appearances last season came on the right wing in Bukayo Saka's absence, but the youngster is also capable of playing in a central role.

However, with Arsenal signing winger Noni Madueke from Chelsea and also reportedly interested in Crystal Palace attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze, he could face stiff competition for minutes during the 2025-26 season.

But Nwaneri will believe he has what it takes to continue his progress, saying after signing the new deal: "I think I've definitely become stronger."

“I've had to adapt to the demands of the Premier League, so I think I've changed physically, but also mentally as well in terms of dealing with setbacks and injuries,” he said.

“I think I've actually become more direct over the past few years and I've added more goals, so I'm excited for what will come next.”

Arsenal included eight academy players in their squad for their pre-season tour of Asia and they will be hoping to emulate Ethan Nwaneri in breaking into the Gunners' first team.

Nwaneri is still just a teenager himself, but has advice for those hoping to follow in his footsteps.

"The first thing was just to keep patient, keep working hard every day at your craft, and have the long-term vision in the back of your head, but just be ready when it comes," he said.

“It's a good pressure that [the academy players] are going to be watching you, so you need to show them the right things. It means a lot that the young generation is looking up to me now because when I was their age, I was looking up to the Hale End graduates and the Arsenal players in general.

“Reiss [Nelson], Bukayo [Saka], Emile [Smith Rowe] - so many players. Ainsley Maitland-Niles - all these players I was looking up to when I was young. You don’t compare, but you’ve shared something, like a moment. They've been where you've been, and you're trying to get to where they are.”

"This is where I feel at home, and where I’m going to develop the best. I'm ready.

“I’m very excited. I see this as my first real season, and part of a proper squad in the changing room. I'm so excited for what I can bring to the team and how I can help the team.

“I'm a very versatile player, so I think I'm going to play anywhere across the front five, and I’m ready to do what the manager needs.”

Ethan Nwaneri's previous contract was set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season, meaning he was attracting interest from Arsenal's Premier League rivals.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool were all among the clubs who were linked with the England U-21 attacker, with the Gunners not allowed to propose a new contract until the player turned 18 in March.

If he had not signed a new deal by the turn of the new year, he could have started talks with clubs from abroad.

BBC Sport revealed last month hat the Gunners were set to make a formal offer to Nwaneri with the clear direction of travel being the youngster committing his future to the club.

The new contract will extend Nwaneri's association with his boyhood club that he joined at the age of 18.

He had become youngest player in the English top flight when he made his debut against Brentford at 15 years and 181 days back in September 2022.

Ethan Nwaneri made his Premier League debut for Arsenal in 2022 at the age of 15.

But it was during the second half of last season that he established himself as a key member of Mikel Arteta's side that finished second in the Premier League.

He scored nine goals and two assists across 37 appearances for the Gunners during the 2024-25 season, playing mainly on the right side of their attack deputising for the injured Bukayo Saka.

The youngster found the back of the net in style in a 5-1 win against Manchester City in February and also scored in the 7-1 thrashing of PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League the following month.

Nwaneri also featured for Lee Carsley's England Under-21 side that secured back-to-back European U-21 Championship title by defeating Germany 3-2 in June.

Glasner is not really able to say anything else while the appeal is ongoing and Palace could find themselves back in the Europa League.

However, the Palace manager did say it is 'tough' when the club feels they are innocent of any wrongdoing.

Glasner also spoke about his frustrations in the transfer window. The Palace boss says that the Eagles need two players if they are going to be competitive in four competitions this season.
