1. Garnacho compared to Chelsea wingerspublished at 10:30 British Summer Time

Alejandro Garnacho will have plenty of competition at Chelsea if a move comes to fruition in the coming weeks.

The Blues have signed another left winger Jamie Gittens this summer while in-form Pedro Neto has also operated down that flank.

According to Transfermarkt, Garnacho has contributed 38 goals and assists during the past two seasons.

In the Chelsea ranks, Cole Palmer, with a combined 48 goals and assists, has contributed more in the Premier League while Estevao Willian also has 48 goals and assists but that came during his time at Palmeiras in Brazil.

Neto has provided 35 goals and assists while Gittens has contributed 17 - meaning Garnacho will rank third in that regard among Chelsea's current options.

However, the United winger only records 0.47 goals or assists per 90 minutes, which ranks him behind Chelsea's Palmer (0.83), Christopher Nkunku (0.73), Estevao (0.72), Neto (0.62) and Gittens (0.58).

Liverpool's 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha has been a revelation during the clubs' pre-season preparations.

Ngumoha impressed with a goal for Arne Slot's side in a 5-0 win against Stoke City on 20 July and was also on target against Athletic Bilbao on Monday in a 4-1 victory.

He also set up Darwin Nunez in the game played at Anfield.

Ngumoha spent eight years in the Chelsea academy before joining Liverpool in the summer of 2024.

And it did not take him long to impress Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who named him in the matchday squad in a Carabao Cup tie against Southampton last December.

He then made his debut against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup, becoming the youngest player to start for the club at 16 years and 135 days.

Ngumoha is an England Under-17 international and was part of their European Under-17 Championship squad this summer.

  11. Does the Community Shield mean anything?published at 09:48 British Summer Time

Mikel Arteta lifts the Community ShieldImage source, Getty Images

Well, it's a bit of a subjective question, to be honest.

Some would argue it's a glorified friendly whereas others celebrate it like any other trophy.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola both used their respective Community Shield victories as a defence to reporter questions during the 2024-25 season.

When questioned about winning only one trophy during his five years at Arsenal, Arteta reminded the interviewer of his two Community Shield victories, stating: “The Charity Shield as well twice, no? “So it's three [trophies]. We need more. We want more and we want the big ones as well."

Whereas Guardiola defended Manchester City's trophyless campaign in May by saying they were only one of three English teams that could play in the Champions League next term to have claimed silverware.

"Of course, it's important to qualify, but except for Newcastle who won the Carabao Cup, Liverpool won the Premier League and Manchester City that won the Community Shield - the other teams didn't win trophies," Guardiola said.

Darwin Nunez has enjoyed some memorable moments with the Reds, such as January's match-winning late brace at Brentford, but has struggled to make an impact consistently.

He has scored just 25 Premier League goals, underperforming his expected goals total by 8.6. That is the second-worst record of any player over the past three years, with only Dominic Calvert-Lewin below him.

The league's best finishers typically register shot conversion rates of over 20%, but Nunez's percentage of 11.1% ranks only 95th. When it comes to shot accuracy, meaning the proportion of efforts directed on target, he also barely scrapes into the top 100.

There is no lack of volume for the striker, who sits inside the top 10 for both shots and shots on target despite only starting 49 top-flight matches for the Merseysiders.

He has also arguably been unlucky, hitting the woodwork 14 times – the most by any player since 2022-23. But ultimately a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal may have persuaded Liverpool now is the time to cash in on the South American.

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was asked about the absence of Mohamed Salah during the Africa Cup of Nations: "We have definitely thought about that and we have brought in Jeremie Frimpong because we think he can play as a right full-back but I also think and feel he can play as a right-winger.

"We have thought about the fact we are going to miss Mo, I think as a maximum for six games, but that is quite a lot in the Premier League - especially when you see how well he did last season.

"Signing Jeremie Frimpong was for multiple reasons but one of them was that he could replace Mo if he was not there. There are other options to replace Mo with as well but Jeremie is definitely one of them."

Having been at Anfield for the Bilbao double-header, I don't think there is any need for Isak. He will only provide us with depth to the attack, and I think spending 130 million pounds in depth is far too much.

    Liverpool

    Arne SlotImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on how valuable this pre-season has been for him: "The good thing about last season was the whole squad stayed so they knew each other very well already.

"Now, a few players have left and we have brought a few players in so that always takes a bit of adaptation because the players we have brought in - some of them have different qualities to the qualities we already have. They need to adjust to their new team-mates but we have to adjust to them as well.

"We have been working for four weeks already so that is the pleasing part about not having a World Cup or another international tournament, so we can work with them from the start."

  17. 'We are always looking at the chances in the market'published at 09:26 British Summer Time

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sun, 15:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on the importance of his attacking depth last season and if he is trying to replicate that in this campaign: "I think we have a lot of attacking power in our team. When I think about Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, Mo Salah, Jeremie Frimpong who can play as a right-winger, Florian Wirtz who can play as a left-winger - I already feel I have a lot of attacking options in my current squad.

"But, as always as a club, we are always looking at the chances in the market but that can also be in the midfield or the last line."

  18. What's the latest on Isak transfer saga?published at 09:20 British Summer Time

Liverpool transfer target Alexander Isak was told to train on his own and away from the first-team squad by Newcastle on Wednesday.

Isak was left out of the club's pre-season tour of Asia after the Sweden striker expressed his desire to explore a move away from Newcastle.

As Liverpool worked on a deal to sign him, Isak trained alone at his former club Real Sociedad and only returned to England on Saturday.

With Newcastle returning to Darsley Park on Wednesday after their pre-season tour, Eddie Howe had said Isak had to "earn the right" to train with his squad.

Sky Sports reported that the club had instructed Isak to report at the training centre late afternoon on Wednesday, meaning he was excluded from a lunchtime training‑ground barbecue that took place after the first-team players trained earlier in the day.

With Darwin Nunez set to leave Liverpool, the Reds could now return with a fresh offer for Isak, having already seen a £110m plus add-ons bid rejected by Newcastle.

  19. 'We have to take care of our young players like Ngumoha'published at 09:15 British Summer Time

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sun, 15:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Rio Ngumoha: "He and Trey [Nyoni] have an incredible chance to work and be around players like Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah every day to see what they do to be ready to perform every three days and that is a step these players have to take and that is completely normal.

"We want to develop them the best way we can but we also have to take care of them. We are aware of that but it has been a promising for him like for Trey as well."

  20. 'We have numerous players that can play at centre-back'published at 09:11 British Summer Time

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sun, 15:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on whether he feels the team need a new centre-back: "We have numerous options that can play there but as I always say, it's the same boring answer as with players that we may bring in or not - I am really happy with the players that we have and we have numerous players that can play in that position."
