  5. Regret over McTominay departure?published at 12:39 British Summer Time

Who will vote for McTominay in the Ballon d'Or?

With Manchester United in the market for a midfielder, do they have regrets over selling Scott McTominay?

The Scotland international joined Napoli for a bargain £25.7m fee and had a superb first season at the club, scoring 12 league goals to help them win the title before capping a hugely impressive year by being nominated for the Ballon d'Or.

McTominay ranked near the top for midfielders to touch the ball in the opposition penalty area last season, and for duels won in Serie A.

"You can compare McTominay with the big midfielders of Antonio Conte's history," journalist Vincenzo Credendino told BBC Sport.

"In his first years at Juventus - 2011-12 and 2012-13 - Claudio Marchisio and Arturo Vidal scored nine and 10 goals respectively.

"It's not a coincidence. McTominay is perfect for Conte, as Conte is perfect for McTominay."

1)Kostopolous 2) Sesko 3) Ekitike 4) Guessand. Pedro’s PL record isn’t that great to be honest. 19 goals in 2 seasons for Brighton, 9 of those pens. He’s also a walking red card when things aren’t going his way.

Brighton chairman Paul Barber spoke earlier this week about the potential interest in midfielder Carlos Baleba from Manchester United.

The 21 year-old who has three years left on his contract at Amex Stadium.

"There's always going to be interest in our players." Barber said. "Manchester United have not been in touch with me. Speculation is speculation.

"Carlos is a fantastic talent. We hope he'll be here for years to come - but its subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn't always predictable."

Sesko will succumb to the Man U atmosphere. Flop. Gyokeres will succumb to the main/only man pressure. Flop. Pedro will succumb to Chelsea selling him before 1st game. Flop. Ekitike will succumb to playing 3rd fiddle to Isak and Ngomaha. Flop.

  12. Man Utd need a box-to-box midfielder?published at 12:20 British Summer Time

Ruben Amorim's system involves two deeper midfield players, wing-backs who push high up the pitch, two inside forwards and a striker.

It is assumed Benjamin Sesko will be the striker, with Matheus Cunha playing behind him on the left and Bryan Mbeumo on the right.

That would mean skipper Bruno Fernandes taking on one of the deeper midfield roles. Now, Fernandes is many things but a box-to-box midfielder is not one of them. He is not someone you would rely on being alert to danger. He is not someone who is going to make a 10-yard run in anticipation of closing down space.

This seems to be a problem even if it was something Amorim dismissed when I asked him on the specific point about his midfield in Chicago a couple of weeks ago.

"Bruno runs a lot," he said. "Maybe in the sprint he's a different player, but he runs a lot. He has a lot of endurance. He's smart. So it's not about that. Bruno's physicality is not the concern. He's ready for the physicality, playing deep or as a midfielder."

If that was accurate, why would United be making discreet inquiries on Carlos Baleba? After all, the Brighton player is very much a box-to-box midfielder, someone with energy and endurance, who can tackle and pass. More pertinently, he is precisely the kind of player Amorim does not have in his squad.

4- Ekitike, 4 - Pedro, 4 -Gyokeres and 4 - Sesko. All hyped up but none are world class, they will all have average seasons, but none will beat the quality already in the Prem, likes of Salah, Haaland, Watkins, Isak.

Not sure I follow Paul from Kettering logic. Didn't Haaland come from the Bundesliga and he seems to have done ok at the "highest level". As for coming from the Portugal, Man Utd took an 18yr old who was quite good, now, who was it? Cristiano someone I think.

  16. Gossip - Alexander Isak will not play in pre-season friendliespublished at 12:06 British Summer Time

    Alexander IsakImage source, Getty Images

Alexander Isak will not feature in the Newcastle's pre-season games against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend amid uncertainty about his future and interest from Premier League champions Liverpool, report the Daily Mail.

The 25-year-old was told to train on his own and away from the first-team squad on Wednesday. The Magpies' boss Eddie Howe has stated that Isak had to "earn the right" to train with his squad.

With Darwin Nunez set to leave Liverpool, the Reds could now return with a fresh offer for Isak, having already seen a £110m plus add-ons bid rejected by Newcastle.
