  9. 'When I heard the club wanted me, I didn't think twice'published at 11:23 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa

New Aston Villa forward Evan Guessand speaking to the club website: "This club is special. History. Pride. Passion. The belief. When I heard the club wanted me, I didn't think twice.

"I am ready to give my all every game, every minute, every kick. Villans, I have heard all about you and I'm now ready to see and hear you.

    "Up the Villa."

  10. Guessand's career so farpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa

Born in France and a former French youth international, Evan Guessand has spent most of his professional career at Nice.

He came through the club's youth set-up and made his professional debut for the club in a French Cup game against Frejus Saint-Raphael in 2020 and the Ligue 1 debut in August the same year.

A loan spell to Swiss side Lausanne-Sport was followed by another to Nantes, where he made a memorable Europa League debut with a winner against Olympiacos.

Guessand established himself as a regular at Nice during the 2023-24 season with six goals before doubling the output last campaign.

He switched allegiances to Ivory Coast when he made his debut for the country in 2024 in a World Cup qualifier against Kenya.

  11. Why Guessand's versatility attracted Villapublished at 11:12 British Summer Time

Evann Guessand promises to be a versatile signing that can help replicate Marcus Rashford's role in Unai Emery's squad.

Like Rashford, the 24-year-old can play across the front line, as well as at number 10. Only 10 of his 30 Ligue 1 starts last season came at centre-forward – he also made eight starts on the right wing and nine as a support striker.

As a result, Guessand provided eight assists in addition to scoring 12 times, all from open play last season. Only five players were involved in more goals in the French top flight.

The nine-cap Ivory Coast international's numbers compare well to those of Ollie Watkins and Rashford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park.

    .

Guessand outperformed his expected goals tally by more than either Watkins or Rashford, but the key point of difference is that he is a more prolific dribbler, leading to significantly more involvement in terms of touches on the ball.

Depending on how he is used, he can also offer more defensively in terms of winning duels and regaining possession – particularly in the opposition third – making him a versatile asset for the campaign ahead.

  12. Guessand's 2024-25 season in numberspublished at 11:08 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa

Evann Guessand scored 12 league goals last season for Nice and was named player of the season as the club finished fourth in France's Ligue 1.

The 24-year-old Ivory Coast forward also bagged nine assists during the 2024-25 season.

He was also on target against Belgium's Union SG in the Europa League.

Guessand scored his first and so far only internatioanl goal for Ivory Coast in a World Cup qualifiers game against Burundi in March.

  15. Guessand is Villa's first major summer signingpublished at 11:00 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa

Ivory Coast forward Evann Guessand is Aston Villa's first major signing of the summer.

He follows Yasin Ozcan, who joined from Kasimpasa but has been loaned to Anderlecht, and back-up goalkeeper Marco Bizot who arrived for an undisclosed fee from Brest.

Guessand was also a target for FA Cup winners Crystal Palace but decided to join Unai Emery's side.

Villa have been looking at striker options since January's departure of Jhon Duran to Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr left them with just Ollie Watkins as their only senior centre-forward.

Marcus Rashford spent the second half of the season at Villa on loan but has joined Barcelona.

Villa, who finished sixth last season to qualify for the Europa League, open their Premier League campaign at home to Newcastle United on Saturday, 16 August (12:30 BST).

    Manchester United

Despite not favoured by Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, Alejandro Garnacho managed six goals in 36 appearances for the club in the Premier League last season.

He also bagged four assists and a goal in United's run to the Europa League final, where they suffered a defeat to Tottenham and missed the chance to secure Champions League football.

The Argentina international's best season at United was 2023-24 when he scored seven goals and created six assists in 36 league appearances.

Still only 21, Chelsea will hope Garnacho will continue to flourish in a new environment if they managed to sign him this summer.

  20. What has gone wrong for Garnacho at Man Utd?published at 10:38 British Summer Time

    Manchester United

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim told winger Alejandro Garnacho he should find somewhere else to play immediately after the Europa League final defeat by Tottenham in May.

The Argentina international seemed to be on a collision course with his boss after both he and his brother posted messages around the Europa League final defeat, when Garnacho was only introduced as a 71st-minute substitute.

Although the winger did go on the club's post-season tour of Asia, he cut a detached and unhappy figure.

He was not selected for the recent three-match trip to the United States, having initially been told to delay his return for pre-season training in the hope of a deal being concluded.

When that did not happen, Garnacho was ordered to train at different times to Amorim's squad, along with fellow outcasts Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford, who subsequently joined Barcelona on loan.

Amorim has had an uneasy relationship with Garnacho since taking charge.

He had only been at United for a month when he axed the winger, along with Rashford, for the victory at Manchester City on 15 December.

Amorim said the decision was because of "training performances, game performances and engagement with team-mates".

Unlike Rashford, Garnacho was handed an immediate recall. Yet he has always seemed an uneasy fit in the system Amorim's prefers because there is no space for an orthodox wide player.
