Sunderland are in advanced talks about signing defender Arthur Masuaku on a two-year deal.

The 31-year-old is a free agent after leaving Besiktas in the summer following a three year spell in Turkey following his move from West Ham in 2022.

The left-back made 128 appearances in all competition when playing for West Ham.

The Congo international is expected to complete a move to the newly-promoted Black Cats with a medical still to be completed.

  2. Is Garnacho one of Premier League’s most wasteful finishers?published at 14:50 British Summer Time

Alejandro Garnacho has been heavily linked with a move to big spending Chelsea, with some reports suggesting he has already agreed personal terms with the Club World Cup champions.

The Manchester United winger, 21, has accumulated plenty of experience since his debut in April 2022 and he has already made 144 senior appearances. He undoubtedly works hard off the ball and no United player won possession in the final third more often last term.

But the Argentina international has often been accused of being wasteful in front of goal.

Garnacho has scored 27 times in his career to date – a goal every 5.3 games – and he’s reached double figures in all competitions in each of the past two seasons. He found the net six times in 36 Premier League appearances, which doesn’t appear a bad return in a struggling United side.

But Garnacho attempted 84 league shots in 2024-25 and of forward players to take more than 50 his conversion rate of 7.1% was the fourth worst. His expected goals per shot was also fifth lowest, suggesting that when he does pull the trigger it’s often from an unlikely scoring position.

However, the most eye-catching statistic is his propensity to waste genuine goalscoring opportunities. He scored just two of the 16 big chances he was presented with last season and only Southampton’s Cameron Archer fared worse, converting just one of 11.

Re Holjund. Man Utd should keep him. During our best years we always had depth on the bench of quality. One of our biggest problems in recent years has been no depth or plan Bs. We should keep Holjund and add depth to midfield and then we can think top 5!

  4. When will the summer transfer window close?published at 14:46 British Summer Time

This summer's transfer window will close on 1 September at 19:00 BST - four hours earlier than the usual 23:00 deadline.

It means the clubs have 24 days left to get their transfer business done.

They will have a two-hour grace period after the deadline to complete transfers but only if the relevant paperwork is submitted to the FA by 19:00.

This summer's window was split into two with the first opening between 1 and 10 June for clubs to register players for the Fifa Club World Cup. It reopened again on 16 June 16.

The winter transfer window is scheduled to be open from 1 January to 2 February.

  6. Who should Newcastle now target?published at 14:41 British Summer Time

Where else can Eddie Howe look now that Benjamin Sesko looks to be swaying towards a move to Manchester United?

"There could be legs in going for Nicolas Jackson as Chelsea are open to selling him as they have strengthened their attack and they continue to do so," said BBC Sport's senior correspondent Sami Mokbel.

"There is interest there from Newcastle, but I also understand that there are several individuals at St James' Park that need to be fully convinced that he is the right option for them.

"Someone who has credit in the bank is Ollie Watkins because he is a proven Premier League striker who has scored a lot of goals.

"Howe looks at him as a safer pair of hands because he is multifunctional and can play through the middle as well as out wide.

"But I can see why Newcastle would prioritise Jackson when Watkins is entering the twilight part of his career."

Selling Hjolund… I don’t like that Man Utd are looking to sell Rasmus, I feel a new striker would ease the burden on him, and £40m isn’t enough to claw back the money and time spent on him. He deserves another season at least.

  8. What could Sesko mean for Hojlund's future?published at 14:34 British Summer Time

What does Rasmus Hojlund's future at Manchester United look like if they sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig?

"I think it means he won't be the starting striker," said BBC Sport's chief football news reporter Simon Stone on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "People have said that they would be better off keeping Hojlund because he has looked quite good during pre-season so far and has scored a few goals but I think there is an acceptance that he could leave.

"When you look at United's forward options, how often is he going to play?

"Especially when he is one of the players that they might be able to raise some money from. They paid £72m for him so they have got to be careful that they don't put a big loss on that, but I don't see the point of them keeping Hojlund.

"They signed him as a young striker to develop and they are now hoping to sign another young striker, who has the potential to develop.

"I think that will be articulated to Hojlund over the coming weeks and I will be surprised if he is still at the club by the 2 September.

"Whether they will look beyond the players they clearly don't want anymore and into the squad that went to the United States we don't know - but they will raise more money."

I'm not sure he's worth £50m, but I'm surprised Everton haven't had a bid for Garnacho, he'd suit their style of play to a tee.

    Isla, Wirral

Why are Tottenham not in for Garnacho? He'll be benched at Chelsea along with most of the 200 man squad. Tottenham linked with nobody yet had a huge boost to their income by winning the Europa League.

    Alan, Hertford

Garnacho is a great asset to Man Utd and any club for that matter. He is also a good impact player to change games. His best usage has been an issue for United’s current manager ability. Best suited team? Villa.

Manchester United open their new-look training ground to the media this afternoon.

They have spent £50m on the upgrade, which took a year and led to the main building being put out of commission.

It will be interesting to see if there are any glimpses of Benjamin Sesko, who is having his medical today, or of Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho or Tyrell Malacia, who have to train at different times to Ruben Amorim's senior squad.

Manchester United and RB Leipzig have agreed to take part in a friendly match as part of the Benjamin Sesko deal.

Neither club have qualified for European football this coming season with United finishing 15th in the Premier League last season and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

United have agreed a deal worth £73.7m with Leipzig to sign the Slovenia striker.

Sesko will complete the formalities, including a medical on Friday, before finalising his move to Old Trafford.

  12. Bournemouth chase Diakite as PSG close on Zabarnyipublished at 14:22 British Summer Time

    BBC Sport football news reporter

Bournemouth have re-opened talks to sign Lille defender Bafode Diakite as Illia Zabarnyi nears a £55m move to Paris St-Germain.

The Cherries had previously walked away from talks with Lille over the £35m asking price for the 24-year-old centre-back.

But with PSG having broadly agreed to the fee of £55m for Ukraine international Zabarnyi - although negotiations are continuing over add-ons - Bournemouth are now back in the market for Diakite.

Sources close to Diakite say the former France Under-21 player has verbally agreed personal terms on a five-year deal, but negotiations between the clubs continue over the asking price.

Lille president Olivier Letang had previously been reluctant to sell Diakite but did not rule out the potential departure of a central defender when asked about it on Friday afternoon, answering "it's possible but only one".

Bournemouth are also keen on signing an additional central defender, with Dean Huijsen having joined Real Madrid in a £50m deal earlier this summer, and are open to signing an additional striker to provide competition for Evanilson.

The south coast club are also known admirers of Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong and Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade.

  13. 'It feels so unjust'published at 14:15 British Summer Time

Former Crystal Palace captain Joel Ward says there's "no reason we can't go on to win" as the Eagles play Liverpool in their first Community Shield on Sunday.

"We played them for the last game of the season, and we were unlucky not to come away with the three points. We played exceptionally well." said Ward speaking to 5Live breakfast.

"If we replicate that sort of performance, there's no reason why we can't go on to win this game.

"It's going to be a tall order, but being at Wembley just a few months ago puts us in good stead."

On the club's appeal to Cas over Uefa's decision to demote Crystal Palace from the Europa League: "It feels so unjust for the fans, for the players, for the management... you play in the most prestigious cup, and you don't get the full reward at the end of it.

"You see how the club is run, you see the fans, you see the players and what they put into it, day in day out, and how much it means to the fans. And it's been taken away.

"But we stay hopeful for the hearing, and now hopefully we get the hearing we deserve and get back in Europe."

"Then, without pre-season, it will take him another three or four more weeks to be ready."

More from Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on the club's transfer window: "We have been quite passive in the transfer window. We have to add a few players to be ready for all the competitions.

"Eddie Nketiah has missed more or less the whole pre-season and he will be out for around eight weeks.

"We have also had injuries to [Matheus] Franca and [Caleb] Kporha too. So we are short of numbers. If we want to be competitive, we have to add players with good quality."

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on the club's demotion to Conference League: "If you have to play in the Conference League, it feels like we have been punished.

"On the other end, if we had finished seventh in the Premier League last season and went straight into the Conference League, we would all have celebrated. It's the two feelings we have and it's only normal.

"We hope that this verdict brings us back into the Europa League because as I said, we haven't done anything wrong."

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sun, 15:00 BST)

    Crystal Palace

More from Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on Liverpool: "The toughest thing happened at Liverpool with Diogo Jota and his brother. Then we see how unimportant results, transfers and everything else is. And Community Shield, the first competitive game after that, will be under these circumstances.

"Liverpool have showed ambitions in the transfer market and if you are the champion and then you invest this kind of money and bring in top players with a clear profile, it just shows their ambition."

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on facing Liverpool on Sunday: "We have had time to reflect in the off season and prepare for the new season. When I came back in the competition mood this week, it already feels different.
