  1. Two strikers sharing the burdenpublished at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

Rotherham United v Stockport County (12:30 GMT)

Rotherham United have got themselves the reputation of being League One's 'yo-yo club' - they get promoted and promptly get relegated.

The past 10 years have included four promotions and four relegations, so you could forgive everyone for just expecting another challenge for a return to the second tier of English football.

But such was the disaster of last season, where they finished a whopping 24 points adrift of Championship safety, a complete rebuild of the squad was required and let's be kind by saying it hasn't quite gelled yet.

Sitting four points clear of the drop zone is a little too close for comfort for Steve Evans' side and they'll need Jonson Clarke-Harris to stay fit and healthy.

The striker is the division's equal sixth top scorer and has 31% of the Millers league goals - albeit they've only managed 19 in total with only Burton and Stevenage scoring fewer.

Speaking of strikers carrying the responsibility, look no further than Louie Barry, whose 14 league goals for Stockport have him at the top of the League One scoring charts with only five fewer than Rotherham's entire team have managed between them.

The trouble for the Hatters is they're going to lose their talisman after the New Year's Day showdown with Birmingham City as he's been recalled by his parent club, Aston Villa.

Quite how you replace 41% of your goalscoring power is an issue no doubt Stockport boss Dave Challinor and his recruitment team have been pondering while digesting their Christmas dinner, but they do have Kyle Wootton with six league goals of his own.

Wootton may have to step up to fill the void but with the transfer window just around the corner and a bit of spending power, don't bet against Stockport pulling out another top signing to boost their hopes of a second successive promotion.

  2. In-form Bromley host Robinspublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

Bromley v Swindon Town (12:30 GMT)

The only time Swindon Town have previously faced Bromley the year was 1976 and Abba's Dancing Queen had just been knocked off the UK Number One Single's Charts.

That day, the Robins won 7-0 in the FA Cup but Bromley go into today's match as favourites having won five of their past six matches, scoring 13 goals in that time, including a 5-2 demolition of Newport County on Boxing Day.

The Ravens can be proud of their efforts halfway through the season, currently sitting 12th in the table following promotion from the National League last term, and a win today would take them to within a point of the play-off positions.

Ian Holloway's Swindon Town travel to south-east London following a hard-earned point at AFC Wimbledon on Boxing Day, and if the Robins avoid defeat today they will have put together their best run of form of the season, having won three and drawn one of their previous five outings.

  3. Clash at the bottom of League Twopublished at 12:15 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

Carlisle United v Accrington Stanley (12:30 GMT)

Carlisle United take on Accrington Stanley in a basement battle clash at Brunton Park this lunchtime.

United are currently rock bottom of League Two coming off the back of a disappointing Boxing Day defeat by Morecambe but have been given a boost before today's match after John Mellish's red card in their 1-0 defeat three days ago was overturned and he starts today's match.

As for Stanley, their Boxing Day fixture at Tranmere Rovers was called off due to thick fog over the Wirrall and are winless in their past six league games.

John Doolan's side are themselves on the precipice of the League Two drop zone, currently sitting third bottom and only two points above Morecambe - although Stanley have played two games less than The Shrimps.

    League One top

Birmingham spent Christmas top of the tree thanks to Jay Stansfield's winning goal at Crawley on Monday.

Former boss Steve Bruce is back in the second city with Blackpool today but victory for Blues will keep them top of the new year.

Any slip-up from Birmingham will have Wycombe and Wrexham looking to capitalise with the Chairboys at Charlton and Wrexham hosting Wigan.

Huddersfield will expect to make it three wins on the bounce at home to Burton with Stockport visiting Rotherham and a big play-off match-up between Reading and Mansfield.

    League One bottom

Burton will need something special to escape the bottom spot today with a win at Huddersfield.

Shrewsbury might fancy the job at home to Northampton with Kevin Nolan taking charge of his second game at the Cobblers' helm.

Cambridge United have got themselves in the survival mix after an awful start to the season but are up against it at a Leyton Orient side unbeaten in their past five matches, including four victories.

Crawley Town missed the chance to climb out of the bottom four by losing to Birmingham on Monday but could still get out of the drop zone with a victory at Exeter.

Bristol Rovers will hope new boss Inigo Calderon can inspire a much-needed victory at Stevenage in his first game in charge.

    League Two top

Walsall's lead at the top of League Two could conceivably reach double figures by tea-time, with a game in hand.

They host lowly Newport while closest challengers Port Vale face a testing trip to play-off chasing Grimsby while Doncaster head to upwardly-mobile Colchester and Crewe visit MK Dons for an intriguing clash in the play-off race.

AFC Wimbledon can sit back and watch with interest as they face Gillingham in the Monday night showcase.

Good afternoon and welcome to a bumper day of Twixtmas football.

Having consulted several trustworthy sources I can confirm today is in fact a Sunday, which means you can absolutely lounge around in comfy clothes, polish off those festive leftovers, and settle in for more than four hours of pulsating EFL action.

We have a feast of lunchtime live games in store across League One and League Two and the remainder of a full programme to come later, so we'd best get cracking...

Oh, and no, we're not particularly used to football free Saturdays and full Sunday programmes, either, it's not just you...
