It might be Twixtmas but it certainly hasn't felt like a break on another frantic afternoon of EFL madness.

Wrexham's last-minute win over Wigan made them the only side in the top five in League One to win, allowing the likes of Reading, Barnsley and Bolton to close the gap in the race for promotion.

At the bottom, the basement trio all spurned winning positions and had to settle for draws - they'll be hoping for better fortunes in 2025.

The new year could be a special one for Walsall who go into January with a monstrous 12-point lead in the race for the League Two title, though the battle for promotion is setting up to be one for the ages.

At the other end, Morecambe are bottom of the pile, though Carlisle and Accrington remain in striking distance.

That's not quite us done for 2024, we'll be back tomorrow night to see if AFC Wimbledon can jump up six places to go SECOND in an incredibly tight table when they host mid-table Gillingham in the final EFL action of the year.

Thanks for your company today, enjoy your Sunday evening, and we'll see you back here tomorrow.

Birmingham City's goalless draw with Blackpool keeps them one point ahead of the pack.

Another late show from Wrexham and Steven Fletcher in their 2-1 win over Wigan moves them up to second place.

Wycombe's defeat at Charlton drops them to third and out of the automatic promotion spots, but the Addicks are motoring now and up to ninth.

Huddersfield stay fourth after a late equaliser against Burton, while Stockport drew and Reading won.

Leyton Orient's third successive win moves them into the top 10.

Burton and Shrewsbury both led in their respective games but had to settle for 1-1 draws while Cambridge United lost 2-0 at Leyton Orient.

It was a painful day for Crawley who missed the chance to climb out of the drop zone as they allowed a 4-1 lead to slip at Exeter as the game finished 4-4.

Bristol Rovers changed their manager with Inigo Calderon replacing Matt Taylor, but a fifth defeat in six league games, this time 3-0 at Stevenage, leaves them only two points clear of trouble.

Peterborough slip into the relegation picture after a fourth loss in five league matches.

Walsall's 2-0 victory over Newport County gives them a 12-point lead at the top of League Two.

Notts County's outstanding 5-3 victory at Cheltenham Town moves them to second in the league, while Port Vale drop out of the automatic promotion places after their 3-0 defeat at Grimsby Town.

Salford City enter the play-off spots thanks to their victory over bottom club Morecambe, with Crewe Alexandra dropping to seventh despite coming from behind to pick up a point at MK Dons.

    League Two bottom

Morecambe end 2024 bottom of the EFL after a 1-0 defeat against Salford.

Carlisle were the only side in the bottom 14 of League Two to pick up a win, and how priceless it could be, hauling them off the bottom above Morecambe, and within a point of Accrington, who remain safe, just.

Eight of the sides above Accrington had to settle for 1-1 draws with Newport losing a little ground after their defeat against runaway leaders Walsall.

What a wonderful day of League Two football we have been treated to with 30 goals scored across 11 matches!

The game of the day will go down as Notts County's 5-3 triumph over Cheltenham Town, which featured a brace from Alassana Jatta, meaning the Magpies go second.

Grimsby easily saw off promotion rivals Port Vale 3-0 to move into fifth, while Walsall continued their fabulous season with a 2-0 victory over Newport County to go an astonishing 12 points clear before New Year's Day.

Crewe earned a point at MK Dons with their 1-1 draw at Stadium MK, while Salford City held on to a 1-0 victory over Morecambe, who go bottom of the EFL.

That is thanks due to Carlisle United's 2-1 victory over Accrington Stanley at lunchtime, when Bromley shared the spoils with Swindon Town with a 1-1 draw.

Tranmere Rovers played out a 1-1 draw at home to Barrow, while Bradford City came from behind to beat Chesterfield at home 2-1.

Colchester held third-placed Doncaster Rovers to a 1-1 draw, and Fleetwood Town, in Pete Wild's first match officially in charge of the club, drew 1-1 with Harrogate Town.

It was a big day at the bottom of League One with Burton Albion, Shrewsbury Town and Crawley Town all throwing away leads and ending up drawing.

Burton conceded an 88th-minute equaliser at fourth-placed Huddersfield with Michal Helik levelling Charlie Webster's early goal for the Brewers, who also had Terence Vancooten sent-off in stoppage time.

Crawley were 4-1 up at Exeter at the break only to concede three second-half goals and miss the chance to climb out of the drop zone.

Shrewsbury were ahead through Aaron Pierre's goal against fellow strugglers Northampton but Cameron McGeehan's equaliser earned Kevin Nolan a first point in charge of the Cobblers.

In his first game at the Bristol Rovers helm, Inigo Calderon saw Jamie Lindsay sent off at Stevenage and the Pirates well beaten, 3-0.

Oliver O'Neill and Jamie Donley got the goals for Leyton Orient as they beat Cambridge United 2-0 for a third successive league win and seventh straight clean sheet in all competitions.

Barnsley are seventh as they eased past Peterborough 3-1 at London Road with the Posh also having Harley Mills sent off.

Jay Matete scored twice for eighth-placed Bolton in their 3-0 victory over 10-man Lincoln.

    Richard Wilford
    BBC Radio WM commentator

It ends 0-0 here, a very poor performance from Birmingham City, and there were some groans around the stadium.

Blues today had plenty of possession but struggled to create chances. Steve Bruce's Blackpool had the better chances and were a threat from set-pieces.

If Blues had won this today it would have been unfair on Blackpool.

Blues were not themselves, but they rode their luck to remain top, and unbeaten at St Andrew's.

Kyle Joseph hit the post for the visitors and Blues keeper Ryan Allsop denied Ashley Fletcher, while second-half sub Jay Stansfield had a late effort cleared off the line by Odel Offiah for the hosts.

Not the way Birmingham boss Chris Davies will have wanted to end the year, but they start 2025 top of the pile, at least.

It's superb work from the veteran striker David McGoldrick who finds Dan Crowley and his dinked cross find Alassana Jatta who nods in his second to seal the three points for the Magpies.

Fair to say you got your money's worth if you went to this one today.

Evergreen Steven Fletcher comes off the bench to pinch it for Wrexham, which is a bit harsh on Wigan, in truth.

Ryan Barnett's deflected strike put the hosts ahead on the hour but Joe Hugill's header looked to have earned a point for the visitors.

Wrexham have tightened up the promotion race significantly with this win.

    FT: Reading 2-1 Mansfield

    Jon D'Laryea
Former Mansfield Town midfielder on BBC Radio Nottingham

It's a tough one to take, first half Mansfield were much the better team, second half arguably we edged it but we just didn't do enough.

A draw probably would have felt like a fairer result.

The young back four that Reading had were great and we just couldn't break them down. It was a game of few clear-cut chances, Reading were clinical, and Mansfield have huffed and puffed but it wasn't our day.

    A Hollywood ending?

It's Steven Fletcher, the Wrexham sub, who takes down a James McClean cross well beyond the far post and has a crack from an angle, beating the wrong-footed Sam Tickle in the Latics goal.

That could be a huge moment in the promotion race on a day when the other pace-setters seem to be faltering.
